  • From Tristan Chung on How to Start the Swing

    Hi Shawn, how are you?

I want to revisit the drill of how you “toss up” the club when you start your backswing … I found that drill is extremely helpful and allows me to find my own tempo. When I get to the golf course, I often lose my tempo and revert back to my bad rushing habits. Can you point me to the right video(s) so that I can play back that particular drill again?

    Cheers,
    Tristan

Cut the grass, peel the carrot, plane the wood, chop the tree, hammer the door frame, peel the back bacon! Now the trick is focusing on one! Appreciate the video, Shawn. Always good stuff.

Sam, what helped me in felling that release “out there” was to cut dandelion stem with one hand (my glove hand). Your hand will feel miles away in front the stem before your wrist releases to make the cut.

Just incredible how the golf industry has gone absolutely mad with micro-management of body parts to fit their version of perfection which is based on a flat lie and geometry that does not even coincide, not even remotely close with human anatomy or the human hard wire for self preservation and survival.
Thank you for the comment and have a stupendous weekend with a honey-do for yourself set of fun tasks! 😀👍😝

This drill helps overcome a lot of swing issues and I think it helps getting the backswing on the right plane? Can you explain why or how that is? thanks

    • From Shawn Clement on Walking Drill

If gravity can cut the grass IN BOTH DIRECTIONS, you can’t be off plane!!
Getting on plane os very, very easy!

Shawn, I may have a suggestion for those who, like me, can’t cheat their brain into seeing the ball as a dandelion (and see the ball for what it is: the object that I want to sling to that target). I’ve found that riveting my eyes on the bottom aft of the ball helps me stay in posture and focus on the task at hand: the feel of the club head releasing and pulling my shoulders out there towards my target. What do you think? I know that you always advise not to look at the ball.

    Again, a fantastic video Shan!
Since I have started with golf I have been fighting with my early extension and overactive right arm and hand (maybe also influenced by time playing basketball intensively using the arm/hand all the time to manipulate the ball, especially the right hand or shooting). Your holistic approach and task/target oriented method of teaching helped me a lot and is in my opinion the only way to be able to get rid of this frustrating flaw.
Many thanks and greetings from Austria!

      Right on Manfred!
I spend my days showing my students how NOT DEFECTIVE they are and what a joy that is to see the transformation from “I am defective and need to be fixed” to “I am capable and let’s see how good this shot can be”!
Make sure you try the sword slash-the club throwing-the hammer through the doorframe! All tasks that will get you through the shot; and make sure that the grip is plenty strong or the face of the club plenty closed to allow for this to happen in your golf shots. The first video in the “consistency series” is a good one for that!

For distance control do you play around with choking down on the grip to take off yardage with a full swing not having to use Goldilocks? Or a combination of the two?

    • From Shawn Clement on Goldilocks Series

I stay away from gripping down; unless you already do this for your regular golf game which is completely fine! Just don’t do anything to dull your sense of Momentum!
USE A TASK AND PERFORM THIS TASK SOFTER OR MORE ASSERTIVELY depending on the shot. Cut through more softly; throw to the direction you want to start the ball more gently so that there os never any guiding or deceleration!!!

I have heard through others instructors that having loose wrist helps a lot with release and creating more clubhead speed . Is this your task based focus on their body part focus ?

Understanding how to let anatomy work is #1 key; then understanding how staying with the task will make it work way better and more efficiently is the cherry on the Sunday; then it is about execution and feeling it in action so that you know what to predict when the chips are down.

The task would be to let the club release your hands ?

      Go to comment
    • From Shawn Clement on Release Fine Tuning

Yes; if that is the task, which is often mine, I allow myself to stay with this task by predicting that when I do feel that task that the dandelion stem is in the way or the doorframe will get squeezed through; you saw the Prediction videos?

Yes my prediction for contact has improved and consistency has gone up now that I have fined tuned my image of contact . Was a incredible milestone .

G’day Shawn. New to Premium and I really appreciate your practical straight forward instruction helping amateurs to improve their golf. Everything is making sense, in most cases, however I would like some clarification on one point. I’m a lefty and have the over the top swing. I’ve watched heaps of YT vids on how to fix, change, manipulate etc this condition. I find those proposed changes end up causing me physical problems (back, shoulders in particular). I noticed from this video that the “blur” you refer to when planning to cut the stem also considered the path the swing should take to the intermediate point in preparing to throw the club. So my brain is now telling me all I need to do is configure this “blur” in the direction I want to throw the club in order to rectify the over the top condition I have. Hope that all makes sense.

Will this help me get rid of my slice, particularly with longer clubs or is their something else I can work on to have either a neutral or slightly in to out swing. Cheers mate.

      Hi Craig!
I have just released my first video in a series with Golf WRX for the backhander; you are a lefty but your right side is your dominant side yes?
Here are the videos you need to address; very potent stuff for you and will take care of your issues:

Have fun and please let me know how you do!!

Hi Shawn. This was awesome and I hope I can find more videos with Savannah. Why? Because I’m a lefty. I’m predominantly right handed apart from baseball. I kick a football with my left foot. Seeing Savannahs swing is very useful as I can take all the tips you offer the tight handlers but translating it visually into lefty use is not that easy. Really appreciate this one lesson video. Cheers Craig.
