Clubhead speed video: is the gravitational pull also another reference for width in the swing ? Will there be more snap in the release with more clubhead speed ?Hit my farthest drives today and wondering if I should be adding these feels to my “action to target “
My focus during those swing was just to feel more gravitation pull like you described in the video. I focused on that and feeling more pull towards the target on the release . My task would be to feel a strong pulling snap release club throw towards the target with my shape I’ve visualized .
This was well worth the viewing. I saw myself so much in Venky! Trying to hit the ball. Which drill should be used to get the handle to go before the club hits the ball? One of my biggest issues!
When I close the club face while taking my grip, then pick a spot 12″ in front of ball on the target line then line up parallel to the target line while setting up. Does the club face stay closed to the target line? In the videos it looks like leading edge of club face is perpendicular to the target line not closed.
Thanks,
Dave
It is closed to the path of the swing going to the right; don’t let the camera angle fool you;
When you release innthe direction you want to start the ball, and the ball flies the way you want it to; the club face is good! Shawn
I’ve had that same question for a while, but not during the swing, only at address. When I’m standing over the ball right before I swing, should the club look 45° closed or squared to the “target line”?
Hey Tyrone!
Neither! It could be one or the other depending on how strong the grip is;
See “weak grip vs strong grip shawn clement” on youtube;
Then see “predict contact” and “goldielocks series” on premium!
Shawn
I have a question on two videos you make.
Battering ram:
Arms falling:
In the battering ram one you seem to promote a sideways movement of the arms (That is the way my arms would go if I was using a battering ram). In the Arms falling you talk about the arms falling down into the chest (triceps crashing into chest). I was wondering which movement is for the arms? No question on the body just the arms.
I have watched your videos for years and am wondering the purpose of the excessive bouncing in your knees as you swing. Is this the way you produce ground forces?
Yes! This is the way humans are wired to swing on swings, pump skateboards, pump skates and skis, and pump golf swings. See “create serious speed shawn clement” and “horse shoes and lassos shawn clement” and “hammer for more power shawn clement” and kettle bell drill shawn clement” just to name a few…see also feet together and one leg update shawn clement”
Hi Shawn
on my swing do i have to think about firing hips first then arms to follow thru your intermidiate marker or everything goes together in the swing
No thinking about the hips at all, nor about the weight shift!
What would be a task to get you through?
Feel a nice snap in the direction you want the ball to start! Send a carrot peel to the direction you want the ball to start! Throw the club to the target and predict the stem of the dandelion os in the way!!
Shawn
I have always struggled with whether “I” am making this release, which brings in start point, timing, and all the noise, or is the club releasing itself? And if it is releasing itself what am I focusing on for this to happen – the task?
Been on the videos for about three weeks, practicing what are some significant changes. Still can’t play a consistent round
Great stuff – thanks
One of my favourite tasks is cutting rows of grass while walking; you start with letting the club cut grass in both directions and feeling the weight of the club release you PAST THE BOTTOM in each direction and feel that snap and re-hinge in both directions.
Then when you see the blur of the club head passing in front of you, or where you are cutting the grass, then you can know how far to step forward to cut the next row.
Cut some rows for a few minutes and feel how quickly the brain gets the system flowing…if you try to take control of the club then the system gets sabotaged.
Thanks Shawn
Very tough letting go! My conscious mind wants something to do. Also, when I watch you demonstrate this, your hands/handle come much further across your body still loaded – it seems like to your front leg, before the head start to drop and the release starts – I am sure I start to the ball much earlier than this, in fear of topping/hitting it thin, or not getting the club face closed. Probably why my misses are always sweeping draws, that start online, and just keep going left.
Thanks for the quick response – work to do today!
Thanks Shawn, I was just getting ready to load that. After 60-65 balls at the range, of trying to make the release happen, I finally let go. My focus on the downswing was just getting the ground, and “leading” the trailing elbow under. Rotation and release just began happening
So now, predict contact, task, range and the course. Glad it’s a Friday
Thanks a lot
Shawn, one problem I have is that I will sometimes hit a ball thin when in the bunker. Hitting the sand first is challenge. Basically I would need to hit the ball fat. And that is not how you should do it. I need some thoughts on how to keep the lag but still hit the sand first. Thanks.
Shawn,
Over the summer I have begun to struggle with Right to Left breaking putts. I’m right-handed and typically what happens is I’ll either accelerate out of fear of leaving it short and hammer it through the break, OR completely decel on it out of fear of running it way by. It’s lead to way too many 3 putts in tournaments. Have the state Senior Am coming up in about a month and been working hard on Right to Left putts to get some confidence back but would appreciate and Drills you may have.
Thanks for Colorado!
Jim
I have seen that one before; and it has a lot to do with our side vision debacle; give your brain an absolute reference; meaning aim way way too far right and confirm that it would be silly to even consider that set up; now you have an absolute. Next is to work your way back to the line you picture the ball rolling into AND THE SPEED YOU WANT TO ROLL IN ON. One more look at the ball rolling in on the last 4 feet of the treck and let the momentum react to the picture. Made some awesome putts yesterday doing that!
Thanks for the Response/Input Shawn! Question: Did you receive my Driver Swing video I emailed you 3-4 days ago? I tried to upload it here on the webpage but it didn’t work. Thanks Again!
I did not? Looked for it but some days the emails coming in are very numerous and I lose certain ones; please go ahead and resend; and if I don’t respond within the week, remind me for the next time; can’t leave my peeps hanging!!😀👍
Shawn, I want to video my swing and send it in to you. Do you have any suggestions on what to use? I cannot afford the new iphones or Samsungs but I could an older model. Would these be my best bet or is there something better. My understanding is you need at least 240 fps. to see the club face and path.
Hi Neal! Slow motion is not a priority; front view and down the line view with 7 iron and Driver is fine; 3 second clips you can easily email straight to my regular email account at [email protected]
Shawn
Loved this video. I feel I am hitting the ball at the right place when I imagine I need to cut the bamboo stick (ball) with the tip of my sword ie the club head. Otherwise my body was rotating too soon. Is that an okay mental model?
Hi Shawn, I have a driver head that a buddy gave me after he broke the shaft. I removed the shaft, and I am trying to decide what kind of shaft to put in it, and I remember you saying how much you like your steel driver shaft. Can you explain what the benefits are to a steel driver shaft?
I decided to get the one from Matt’s driver fitting video–the Mitsubishi Kuro Kage with the stiff flex. My current driver has an extra stiff flex because I used to really try to hit the ball, and thus swung much too hard 10/10. Since I have really been trying hard to let gravity guide my swing, and only give a little extra nudge with the kinetic chain by sinking a bit when my left foot grabs the ground, I really feel like I’m around your preferred 3/10, but I’m not sure I’m reaching the 7/10 on the speed that you advocate. I hit the ball with a nice fade or draw, but I’m carrying it 230-245 compared to the rare occasion I would hit a good one before out to 290-300. No complaints from me though, being in the fairway at 230 is much better than ob or deep in the trees which is where most of my drives would end up when I was trying to kill it with the rare lucky straight one when all the stars aligned. Now I pick a target, shot shape, and more often than not giving over to gravity takes me there. I just have to pick closer targets now. Thanks for changing golf for me Shawn, I only wish more people understood how simple it can be, because this is the best game ever created when you know where the ball is going.
