    I like your Method of playing I am trying to play follow your instruction as it seems to make so much sense . But it’s not working for me yet. Having a bad spell at moment went for a lesson and they don’t like my strong Grip . I mention you and they say he can’t see your Grip or swing . I play off 10 but if you see my swing you would say how .

    Shawn, I’ve been watching your videos on and off for some time and I’ll admit that throwing to the target hadn’t done much for me – until now. Today on the course, things just clicked. I figured out how the club needed to be oriented to get to the target, and just like that, a ton of athleticism was unleashed on the golf couorse. I wasn’t perfect by any means, but I was having oodles of fun.

    Now, to my question. Above you use the visualization of squeezing the ball against a wooden block, which is great for the irons. How does that change for the driver? Can you use a similar, though adjusted task that will help me visualize what I’m trying to accomplish with the club that is the bane of my existence?

      Right on and congrats on the benchmark!
      Driver through the doorframe is awesome! It is simply slightly on the upswing (visualise the nail pointing 5 degrees up) and use that ball on a string-hammer throw style to nail it through the frame and into the picture you want to send it into.

    An observation.
    I could not find your video, but i think what i say will apply here.
    You made a point prviously that the arm club unit weighs 20% of our body weight and if we get out on our toes we will be pulled off balance. Thats a problem I know well. I also know fat and thin, along with a malformed, not circular arc that requires push force to partially hit a servicable shot.
    Well, in considering your teaching about counterbalance via the butt, it occured to me that the back is counterbalancing too. When i started to sense i was moving the swing with my back in both directions, well it was a revelation. Much more circular, much less fat or thin, much easier levitation, much simpleer to get out of the way, substantially more powerful contact.
    Thank you for your amazingly organized and scientific approach. I have been a member for a week and you have already helped me fix several issues.

    I had been pushing shots too frequently to the right with the longer clubs so I was watching this series with greater than normal interest. The football throw never clicked until I went out and threw one. I noticed that the inside of the right forearm is always pointing up in that throw. I now feel like that is what is happening during the backswing and through to impact. This has fixed so many things it has amazed me.

    Sometimes I get the distance to ball just right but my posture is off and sometimes it’s the opposite when they are both right I flush it any drills or thoughts for getting both of those right I’m guessing the perpetual motion drill is one any others thanks

      This is an important question! Thank you Cliff!
      Without the “dynamic” posture, which is the one that will transmit the energy properly through the kinetic chain (see kinetic chain series), you would get some misfires that would affect distance to ball for sure;

      Systematically when matching set up to flight plan, you would have picked an intermediate point, then set yourself up within it for stance and ball position; THEN COMES POSTURE, then distance to ball, then tweak club face and grip to match flight.

      The acid test is the mental prediction of when you deliver your action in the direction you want to start the ball, it feels like the posture will support the action and the distance to ball and ball position jive nicely!

      Don’t worry about the shoulders! Everything you need is with the intermediate point and your ability to let the swing go left or right of it; the I.T. Is the north star!

    What kind of improvements would you expect with someone coming from an open stance to a closed stance? I’m 35 and still pretty flexible so an open stance kept me from taking too long of a backswing and helped me turn my hips at impact. I do have a tendency to come forward towards the target on my downswing, which could be because I away back off the ball in the backswing. So this could help! I’ll just have to hit some balls to ight to find out!

    The median is the missing link. I recently switched to using the diagonal stance with my irons and immediately all the balls were going to the right, no matter how I adjusted my feet. I do not have a similar problem the driver as I often using existing divets as the median point. I am working on this the rest of the week.

    Hi Shawn, I have a question about the intermediate point. In past videos I’ve heard you say the IP should be ideally no farther than a foot away from the ball. In this video and others recently it appears that the IP you are using is a bit farther away from the ball (maybe 2-3 feet?). I’m just starting to pay more attention to my IP as you’ve emphasized it as the “compass” we need to be using for true alignment. Can you please clarify the best distance for an IP depending on the type of shot and add some insight on how to pick one and where that focus falls in the hierarchy of task management in relationship to putting it all together? I find myself confused on what order and where exactly to put the IP focus into my swing if that makes sense. Thinking Throwing the club either right or left edge of the IP while cutting through the dandelion stem seems to be the picture I’m getting but the distance between the IP and ball seems to really change the angle of the swing path in my mind. Is it safe to say that for a bigger fade or draw you’d want it closer and for a “straighter” fade or draw you’d want it farther away?

      Hi Dave! I can answer those easily right here:
      I use a bigger one on the videos so you guys can see it and where I will not hit it and have to replace it on every shot…😝. However, I will be doing a video in the next month (several actually) on the application of the diagonal stance on the golf course and as an example, on a par 3, I will pick a divot that lines up with my flight plan and tee up right at the back edge of it and use the same divot for that shot; VERY ACCURATE! And most of my IPs are blasted away as I whip right through them on my way into the flight plan.

      For the second part, you are throwing-slashing with ease in the direction through and past the side of the IP chosen and you are able to stay with this because YOU PREDICTED THE STEM OF THE DANDELION WAS IN THE WAY IF YOU DID. Some are terrific at just cutting through stems towards something; others are better at throwing the action feel of that slash release towards the direction they want to start the ball to get their minds past the ball and the prediction process is the key.

    I’ve been watching your videos for over a year now with great success
    , but, still experience some days of inconsistent ball striking. I have heard you utter the phrase “every instrument known to mankind is done handle 1st” a hundred times but as you talked about closing the face of the grass whip it resonated with me that I am still releasing early despite the fact that I am target oriented. I went to the range after work and employed all of your principles but made sure my hand lead my throw to the target and my contact was like never before, crisp and precise. I thought I was leading with my hands but my hit instinct must have still been present. I can’t believe I didn’t realize this before. Is there anything wrong with this line of thinking?

    Hi I have been playing golf for about 3 months and been watching videos from everyone how to be a better golfer. Problem I have had is you all tend to have different ideas. So I have taken the plunge and decided that I am going to follow you and start my training with with your videos.
    So I started with the grip videos and it all feels alien and uncomfortable, if i persist with my own grip which is comfortable will this cause me huge problems with the rest of the set up and swing?

      This is key here; send me a picture of your grip at [email protected] show both grip and club face in the picture please! And changing the grip will feel very different; what is important is that the grip feels very solid and the face looks closed and it feels like the ball will go left if you let it;
      What is your common miss?

    If you want to hit a fade and you aim left of the IP, what brings the ball back to the right. When I do that my ball goes straight left may even draw further left. I am missing something.

    Hey Shawn,
    Along with braced tilt, you make a point in another video about Hogan and his address position incorporating the right arm facing out. I believe you make reference to the Ravielli “bandage wrap” drawing in “Five Lessons”. I have searched and searched, but can not locate that video. Could you guide me to that content, it was a revelation and helped me understand another aspect of being able to get into a position to throw.
    Much appreciated. Your information is gold and I’m evolving rapidly.
