In the braced tilt video on premium at 3:21 you say about the backswing pre-turn “but at one point you do want to evolve out of that because your turn is now fluid and has no issue and all you want to do now is just allow it to respond to the target.” Please clarify: Do you mean that eventually you no longer want to set up in the braced tilt, or is that line specific to the (partial) backswing pre-turn and you still like the braced tilt as a long-term solution to a proper setup? I’m trying to find my way to the correct braced tilt setup but I think I’m over-cooking it. Probably too much left on the lower body and too far right on the tilt away from the target. After turning and tilting my head to the right about 20% I felt like I had lost touch with the target so maybe I was over-turning and tilting the head there. I also found that I was lining up right of the target and so that exaggerated my problem. Finally, if I am getting better at the elephant walk with the grass whip I am theoretically better centered and curing a sway and so will I be risking messing with the natural/centered position I’m finding with that elephant walk by setting up in a braced tilt?
Great question and yes, easy to mess up when looking for a position; typically golfers always overdo these things; so stick with a task and allow your set up to find the task. See “throwing the club” video on premium.
Then see “goldie locks series” and predict what needs to happen in the set up to allow you to throw the club in the direction you want to start the ball.
Hey Shawn, Gary Hackney here. I get the feeling of being under and through to the picture and when I am having a good day the accuracy and distance with short clubs is amazing (140 yrds P wedge). But I have developed a terrible shank that just seems to show up out of no where with the short irons, especially my 54 and my 60. This seems to happen late in the round when I am tired. The more I try to stay under and through the worse the shank gets. Any thoughts on why this is happening. I am right handed and play steel shaft fitted irons.
Hi Gary! It is not about staying under and through, it is about performing your task; you know, cutting through the dandelion stem, or squeezing through the doorframe, or sending that a]carrot peel or of course, in this video, sending the club with the short stop throw and PREDICTING the stem of the dandelion is in the way.
Do you see the blur of club when you make a practice swing with the wedges?
Hey Shawn, I do see the blur of the club on practice swings. As I have thought more about this though I get a sense of wanting to “hold on” as it were, trying to get the start line over the intermediate target. I know that is pushing my focus to the ball rather than the task. When I am good with my short irons, I am really good but this shank thing is really taking a toll on my overall game in terms of concentrating on the picture and task rather than the ball? (Fear is an ugly thing)
Good morning Shawn, 49 year golfer here single digit for most of that time. Was diagnosed with eye cancer
about 10 years ago, treated with radiation, still have some vision in the right eye (formerly dominate eye). Resulted in complete devastation of my game (anything less than a full swing) as I have lost depth perception. As long as I could avoid have pitch shots, lobs or sand shots I could scrap it around in the high 70’s to low/mid 80’s. After a week or 2 of working on your content, letting the club fall, not driving the hips,
focusing on the little patch of grass below the back of the ball with the good eye and following thru with the club going to the target, I had a very pleasing 10 fairway, 12 green 74 (almost shooting my age of 73) a couple of days ago.
I am looking forward to even better play as I smooth out the rough edges of getting accustomed to your method of swinging the club. Thanks, Don
Hi Shawn, I wonder if you could make a video that talks more about the golf squat. Seems I see people talking about it trying to perform the squat on your forum and I think there is some confusion. Isn’t the squat just more of an illusion? I mean when I look in the mirror and see myself shifing weight and turning in the dowswing it does look like a squat but that is just because of what your legs are doing. You don’t acually squat then turn do you? Seems so out of sync when you do that.
Nice spiral! A lot of wisdom in this video, as usual. As someone who likes to watch good swings, I would like to see you post that 3 iron video in slo-mo with say 10 or 20 repeats back to back in FO and DTL separately. Same for the driver. There is a korean youtube channel that does that and its fun to watch.
The throw series has really helped my swing and I had the best range session yet this summer after practicing throwing clubs. I watched one of your latest Golf WRX videos on your YouTube channel about using a diagonal stance to help support the swing to get better dynamic draws and fades. That change is money and has enabled me to work the ball like never before. You mentioned in the video you were going to get into more detail on using that stance on the premium channel. Is that topic in the works soon? So looking forward to learning more about that. Thanks Shawn for getting it on the shelf where folks like me can reach it. It’s been so fun seeing the weekly improvement and enjoying as you say that “bliss on a stick” feeling.
Hey Dave! You bet! One more throw; the hammer throw, and then the diagonal series begins!
Been having some incredible results with my students and can’t wait to bring it to you guys! ‘Shawn
Hi Shawn, my question is about “throwing the club” or “ letting the club fall” . I’m getting really good results when I simply let the club fall and get out of the way. However when I think about throwing the club I put a bit more speed into it and get quite a bit more distance, but am not so consistent and even had a couple of unmentionables 😱. I’m a qualified tennis coach so it feels a bit like when I’m demonstrating a serve it goes in nicely but in a match it’s not going to produce any aces and I need to put a bit more oomph into it. Advice please.
I gather you are talking about your irons?
One thing that I like working with students with is the 3/10 effort to get 7/10 speed and compression. Like a solid 2nd serve. Golf is all about the solid second serve! 😀
One thing I find most interesting with throwing in relation to the swing is that when I “throw” a draw it feels like I have to be trying to throw the club up into the clouds for it to release parallel to the ground. Otherwise a draw comes out very low and skips off the ground about 10 feet in front of me. Throwing a fade it seems much easier to get height on my throw. Not really sure why this is. Is it the “football” vs “javelin” release?
Went and practiced some more after watching one of the other throw the club videos. In that one you said, “Feel like the club is coming out of both your shoulders.”. With this in mind the throw to the target was much more distinct. My previous feel of having to “throw into the clouds” for a “draw” was gone and the perception was much more natural. Accuracy was much better too! Only one throw was more than a few feet off line.
I must be a slow learner because as much as I try to let it all go, on the course I tend to try to steer the ball. This was me yesterday, then I finally remembered this drill. I went from being even with my playing partners on drives to being 35 – 40 yards past them. And went from pull hooks to straight down the fairway. Even out driving their drivers with my 3 wood. I have to double-down on trusting this lesson, it works.
