  • From [email protected] on DIAGONAL SERIES PART 4-DRIVER!

Hi Shawn. I mentioned before hat I use this stance already for my drives. Just one observation / question as to whether you have the same experience.

In terms of my straight draws, these seem to go slightly further than a more conventional stance draw but the fades are noticeably shorter from a diagonal stance than my fades from a conventional stance.

I think this could be to do with the fact that in order to ensure I can maintain left edge of the intermediate point my swing seems to be more out to in and consequently a bit shorter, hence the reduced distance achieved. I have attempted a more rounded and fuller swing but this feels contrived and unnatural from the diagonal stance.

Is this something you have noticed and any suggestions as ideally I would prefer to have only one stock stance for the driver.

Many thanks and best wishes Steve

The fade IS NOT an out to in swing; it is simply a swing in the direction you want to start the ball with a nice throw!! The set up takes care of making it fade!

Thanks for replying Shawn but you didnt really address my concern. I will rephrase to hopefully make it clearer.

From the tests you have carried out are your own driver fades using a diagonal stance as long as those from a conventional stance ?

I ask this because when fading with the diagonal stance I’m not hitting the ball as far with my driver as a fade with a conventional stance. I think this is because my backswing shortens naturally in order for my brain to maintain left edge of intermediate point focus. I have attempted a fuller backswing turn but the diagonal stance seems to encourage me to swing across the line and also lose connection to the left edge of my intermediate point. Thanks for anything you can add in this respect. Steve

Ahh, ok, thanks Stephen. In the “Great Driver Nugget” video, I was saying that the square stance with the driver is much more conducive to the power fade; because of the fact that there is no platform under the left side beyond the ball for the draw with square stance but that with the fade you do. However, if the diagonal stance is too pronounced, it can easily prevent you from clearing once the kinetic chain has engaged in both cases.

This is why Hogan wrote about a graduated diagonal stance in his book.

So the answer to you and to a bunch would be to have a blend of both having a better access to the backswing to gather the necessary range of motion to whip the club with ease while also getting the clearance to get to the target. This is where “goldie locks” will need to come in to mediate! 😀👍

Many Thanks for the additional words of Wisdom on this Shawn. I shall keep experimenting and Goldie locksing to see where this goes. I quite like the idea of having a power fade stance which I know won’t go left and a diagonal stance for the draw which pretty much always ends up middle to left side. BTW the accuracy of my full wedges has improved considerably thanks to using a diagonal stance, possibly because of an increased focus on releasing through the right edge of the intermediate point. I hope the e book is coming along nicely. All the best Steve

Takeaway path was huge and immediate improvement for me. I’ve always brought club back very slightly inside, but tonight on range with bit of focus on takeaway path matching target path was consistently nailing straight darts at flag from 56w to 9iron.
    Thanks!

I can do this well with my irons, and with the more upright swing of the iron it feels super natural. I can combine it with peeling the carrot and get a great result. I feel like when I am throwing the driver, my swing is now more around me, and my miss / dispersion is horizontal, vs vertical, and the result isn’t nearly as good. Not sure if I am thinking about this right, or executing it wrong?

Hey Shawn! First time for me to actually see you play shot by shot. After 5 holes, here are a few things I picked up:

    1) You also miss!! 🙂 I know it sounds crazy – but I half expect all of your approaches to hit the green – hahaha – if you miss one then me missing 3 is actually OK.

    2) Your attitude is very positive. I noticed a few rounds back that when I play ‘happy’ (don’t know if this makes sense), I tend to play better. This is some thing I should always keep in mind.

    3) I finally get what you mean when you say ‘there is no MAKE SURE’ in golf. You play your shots with the shape that is needed – there is no making sure that the face is square – you just ensure that your setup will give you the best chance for the planned shape/flight.

Great stuff on this video. Learned quite a bit from it.

I had so much fun in this round! The course was what it was and I just played it and did you see some of the putts I had? Wow, it would be cool to see that on the worm cam they have on tour! The suspense on the way to the hole would be off the charts!
That is also the thing; knowing that there is no make sure just frees you up and allows you to simply accept what the course and the conditions and your state of mind and body is that day and just be in a nice state of flow. Which is what the theme for this off season series this winter will be-FLOW AND SPEED
    Have a good one! Shawn

    Shawn,

Could you please do a Fall Fall video with all clubs through the bag? This video is one of your best for the viewer to actually feel what you are feeling. I think it could be super helpful for all. Thanks!

Tried this today and got very good results. Fastest swing speed I’ve had in a long time. Consistently hitting the sweet spot on the club face too. I had to set my driver down to 7.5* and it was still going quite high. I’m not really using the ground to the optimum and not making a very big hip turn yet but the results are consistently down the middle so it’s a step in the right direction. Thanks Shawn.

Is their a theory behind “get behind the ball” for draw vs just aligning the feet and path to right for draw. Not debating it works(I hit my 9 iron 150yds with get behind the ball this evening, 3 times so it wasn’t fluke and 9 is usually my 130-135 club) just wondering why it works?

If your body is in front of the door frame, you have to reach back to not miss; this wastes momentum and effort in the wrong direction as well as when you are too far behind and have to reach forward!

Hi Shawn I got a lot from this video but I find I don’t get much lag (at all) what video and or drills should I work on? I can throw the club but I don’t seem to be able to transfer that to the golf swing on the course. Thanks I am learning so much from your lessons. Cheers

Throwing the club is a great place to be for getting the right amount of lag to a target; and of course you are throwing to a target right? 😀👍
Next is the prediction process; you want to be able to predict that your contact will be solid and the ball will go in the direction you want it to IF YOU THROW THE CLUB IN THAT DIRECTION!
See “predict contact” video as well as the “goldie locks series” videos!
      Have a blast! Shawn

I really like your use of the volley ball to illustrate passing through to the target vs the impact bag. I created a very bad habit of stopping at the bottom due to the image of hitting the impact bag ( kind of jabbing at the golf ball) instead of sweeping through it. Very frustrating and produces poor results. This video is very helpful to. E. Thank you. Your videos are very helpful to the “feel” player. I very much dislike the instruction methods that make you think of a hundred parts enroute to the golf ball!!! Thank you.

Hi Jean! Good stuff, and thank you for the great feedback; the reason why you like this kind of instruction is because I have done a ton of research as to what are the best ways for a human to learn motor skills. One of the best on this is Gabriele Wulf from UNLV. Check out the “anti-manipulation” and “the genius of Gabriele Wulf” in the premium list of videos!

I think I just grasp the concept of grass cutting and the dandelion after watching this video. I had watched your other youtube videos regarding this and I would focus on cutting grass at the ball which would cause me to be inconsistent and hit behind the ball but after watching the ball on the string and the arc I now understand that I need to start the grass cutting after clipping the dandelion stem. Is that correct?

When I stopped collapsing my right arm my strain level was able to drop too. Or maybe when my strain level dropped I didn’t feel the need to collapse my right arm. Either way it seems to work hand in hand.

    • From Shawn Clement on Putting - Stroke & Distance Control

Yes!! When that arm-putter unit is balanced under the shoulder sockets and tracks like a rail, all you need to do is set up to the line you feel the ball needs to be on to roll into the hole at the speed you want it to roll in on, recall the last 4 feet of that roll into the hole and let it swing.
It is like you have already made the putt and are re-living it! 😀👍
