I play a very strong grip for the same reasons you explain in this video.
However, when I want to play a fade, I need to weaken my grip a little and I don’t feel comfortable anymore.
Is it possible to hit a fade with a strong grip (same club head/hand relationship as for the draw) ?
It could be interesting to watch Savannah hit fade shot and describe her setup adjustments.
We do! There is very little difference in grip between fade and draw; see “hit upwards to stop slicing shawn clement” (the thumbnail says uncork the power fade) on youtube; and on premium, see “fade fine tuning” video!
Hi Shawn,
My grip is picture perfect to what you are showing but during both hand acid test, i always feel the butt of the club wanting to slide along the pad of my lead hand at the release and it shows on my glove. My grips are brand new and I’m squeezing the juice out of it. No problem with single hand acid test.
Hey Shawn, going with what Eric described, do you think different size grips matter? I have a few clubs that are still standard but I really like the way a midsize feels. What effect do they have?
They definitely can; if a grip is way too big or way too small it can definitely affect the grip pressure and the integrity of the grip during the swing; the test is always “which one can you squeeze the hardest and clamp down on the best”?
Then do the whole set that way.
Being left handed this is really great as Savy is also left handed. My question is at address is the club head square, open or closed? It seems a little open in the video. When do you take your grip?
We call it a GRIP-CLUB RELATIONSHIP. Once the hand is wrapped around the club, the person’s anatomy includes a club and it’s face now. The test to see if this is the right combination, is when you release the action THROUGH THE BALL, and the ball flies the way you want, then you have the right combination. Too many different interpretations out there to call it too strong or too closed or whatever.
I would test it in the Perpetual Motion drill and as you are swinging back and through, monitor what the hands are doing and keep swinging until the hands stay on the club.
Shawn
Thanks Shawn. I kept doing perpetual motion and I think I’ve put the finger on it, Trail hand wants to release a bit differently then the lead hand thus prying the club out of my lead hand. It’s not by much and I had to monitor the hand mouvement very closely to detect it.
I’m a bit confused. Based on your various grip videos it seems like there are 2 different takes on grip. The “umbrella” position with snuff box on centre or slightly right of centre looks different than “hammer doorframe” position which has the much stronger grip position with the thumb more on the side of the grip, index knuckle on top and the snuff box well right of centre.
For me “umbrella” position leaves an open face at impact where as the “hammer” position leaves the face square at impact. The “hammer” position feels more correct to me. Looking at your grip it appears to be more like “umbrella”. Please explain.
This drill is really helping me with my hip slide/lateral move in my downswing.
I’ll be honest, I have a hard time feeling the catapult concept. I just feel like I’m making an “armsy” swing, but on video, my hips are actually rotating nicely.
My biggest issue is that I just keep shanking it! I hit tons of shots out of the heel, and about 5% shanks. Even when I hit a good one with this drill, I’ll hook a 7 iron 30-40 yards left of target.
I’m not sure if I’m trying to hit the ball, rather than swinging to the target or what, but I could use some help!
Good; see the “blur of club” video on premium; and see the blur appear as you swing the club and cut grass in both directions . Then see “distance to ball” video and “football drill series” to make some space for the arms and club in front of the body. Throw the football with feet together. Shawn
Love the latest videos with Savvy!!
I can’t seem to graduate from super narrow stance to regular stance while playing. Every time I widen a little bit, I catch the ball thin or hit grounders. With my feet really narrow, I hit the ball beautifully. I have had double hip replacements and am wondering if this could be the reason? I don’t mind playing really narrow so am wondering if this is how I should just continue to play. My distance and direction are so much better. By narrow for an example with a 9 iron, my feet are only about 6 inches apart. Also, can’t seem to graduate from the pre-turn?
Hi Melanie! STAY WITH THE NARROW STANCE! Your body just spoke to you loud and clear!
Bobby Jones had a VERY narrow stance.
But I don’t understand the question about graduating from the pre-turn? If you are hitting it well, what are you doing about that at the moment?
I still have to use the “pre-turn” of my hips for my shots to help me feel like I’m in the correct position behind the hit. Maybe for me it just feels like a pre-turn because I used to set up so open?
I’ve been fighting some direction inconsistencies, mostly pulls and thought is was my hips and over swinging. After reviewing a video of my swing, I could see a breakdown in my acu structure, left arm bending and the arc collapsing at the top of the BS. Also, I was wearing out my thumb nails !
This grip lesson helped me understand that my left wrist was too cupped at set up. My grip looked fine but the cupping of my left wrist ( lead arm) seems to be breaking down the ACU structure from top to bottom. By flattening the back of left wrist, my BS is a bit shorter but feels more powerful, structure looks much better. Thinking now about the number of exposed knuckles showing on my left hand now. Also, flattening the left wrist changes the lie angle of the club.
Thoughts ? Am I heading down the wrong path with this idea ?
Hey Keith!
If what you are describing is going from a COLLAPSED LEAD WRIST TO A SOLIDLY ANATOMICALLY CORRECT HINGE OF THAT WRIST THAT ALLOWS THE RIGHT OR TRAIL WRIST TO HINGE WITH IT, we are good!
Shawn
1- last summer, on my very good drives, I could feel the shaft flexing a bit backwards at impact and then snapping on the way through as the ball left the face. Is this good? Shaft is a stiff diamana rayon 60 (blue nike vapor driver. I bet you remember this one😉)
2- It would be nice to have a video on how to work the driver. Is it the swing path that makes it draw/fade? club face open/ close? Ball position? A bit of everything? I just can’t draw my driver. Closing the face only lowers the ball flight to a point where I actually put top spin. Either it’s straight or push fades.
This lesson helps me get out of the maze where I have beenstuck in…
Fow now, I understand why I still have a weight on my back foot after finishing. I promise my swing will be fixed and improved through happy practices. ^_^
Thank you so much, Savy and Shawn.
Just subscribed and watched first video. I would watch more, but have work to do…. 🙂 🙂 🙂
I think this will really help my game. I think way to much when playing. Ball position, wrist angle, turn not slide, back swing etc etc. Once you start thinking the whole game goes. I’m excited to continue and start working on this.
I seen the comment above on head position, do not want to say to much yet since I only started watching but agree, it seems like when you started with arm movement the head was still in the middle, than when you set up to door frame it looks like you tilt or turn back a little at set up.
Shawn: With the driver, it really appears that the white tape is towards the heel and that you are addressing the ball towards the heel of the club. Is that an illusion?
Dale
Moe did this, Vijay and Fuzzy did this and many more; our extension is mot AT THE BALL, it is past the ball to the target. See the impact position of Joaquin Niemann from down the line! Collect at impact and release OUT TO THE TARGET. Shawn
Tried this at the range,i really like the feel of it. Really felt like the ball was compressed . However the only way i didnt pull hook the ball was to open the club face. i would say that in normal driver stance(WIG set up) my face is 5 to the hour. When i used this stance, which i like my club face was on the hour.
Is this the a reaction you would expect from such adjustment?
loving the premium by the way. should have signed up to it years ago.
Hi Shawn, After many years away just returned to your videos yesterday. I viewed the three first grip videos and used what I hoped was this grip today during a round. I cam home with two tiny blisters just in the crease between the middle finger and the palm and the same between the pinky finger and palm.
I also see a wear on my grip towards the top on my seven iron. I am wondering if I grip a little too far out or if it is that my club grip is too thick towards the top and I grip up there.
Shawn…
My wife just walked in from down the hall where we have our new rowing machine and asked if she could wear gloves… it never occurred to me that I did a session last night and that my blisters might stem from that… 🙄 But, the grip wear still remains …

Great video! However I can’t get “weight of the ax” to dovetail with kinetic chain/leg pumping in my head.
Do the legs initiate the kinetic chain:
 A) Faster than gravity, causing the arm club unit to fall faster than a weighted ax? or
B) At exactly the speed of gravity, causing the arm club unit to fall the same speed of a weighted ax (not rushing the downswing).
When I really dig into the ground with my legs, I can hit the ball much farther, however, I lose that wonderful “gravity” feeling.
BONUS paradox question: I was having great results yesterday with “Pulling in the downswing” https://youtu.be/hbs1fDy8Wtg. However, that seems to contradict today’s “Weigh of the ax” video. Thanks!
For me the feelings of a golf swing (learning from Shawn) are UP, DOWN, UP using rotation. The axe drill is amazing for putting you on plane and getting your body out the way and importantly, your right hip UP, HEAVING your arms UP into a nice THROWING position with your full turn and butt eventually facing the target.
When you stay on your target and transfer your weight to the inside of your left foot (ULTRA IMPORTANT and transfer from the back) then you start your DOWNswing into the ground but VERY IMPORTANTLY, you are going TOWARDS YOUR TARGET. When you’re coming DOWN you can squat as much or as little as you want and delay the throwing of the clubhead if you were THROWING/TOSSING A CLUB TOWARDS YOUR TARGET.
For me, this last bit is definitely UP but TOWARDS YOUR TARGET and you can even feel the PERPETUAL MOTION bounce of the body (use Shawn’s batter a door down drill to feel this well). I think Shawn has also described this as a reversed spike in volleyball (spiking upwards). You can feel this more if you leave your trail foot anchored for longer as then you pop UP more on your right toe before it turns. I think this last bit comes with time and more practise.
THESE ARE JUST MY FEELINGS but they may help…I certainly don’t think about any of this when I’m on the course, I keep it very simple:
Heave my axe/club on plane (plane comes from your target, either staying left or right of your intermediate point, IE fade or draw) and then whip that clubhead through to your target.
All those roads lead to Rome! 😀👍
When you let the arms fall THROUGH THE STEM TOWARDS THE TARGET, the brain has to engage the kinetic chain and get the body out of the way of this fall. THIS KINETIC CHAIN IS PRIMAL AND CANNOT BE STOPPED ONCE ENGAGED AND THIS IS WHAT PULLS THE ARMS THROUGH!!
This is what is sooo freaking fun about a human machine; IT IS A VERITABLE WEAPONIZED CATAPULTING SYSTEM TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE. Shawn
I’m very interested to hear Shawn’s answer. I kind of have the same question which I will post below. I’m pretty sure he will say that BLENDING any of these analogies is a good thing as we travel further down the rabbit hole.
That was your best video ever about the down part of the swing!! Hits home for me. Now I have great success with the step drill even when I step forward and perform the backswing at the same time. I feel the separation of the upper and lower body and how it starts from the ground up. My question: In your expert opinion. When I blend these 2 feelings should I start DOWN or FORWARD first? If I do the step drill I’m obviously starting forward. So then should I leg pump from there? Probably a stupid question but I have to ask.
NONE OF THE ABOVE!! Stick to the task!! Task is king!! (which is a video title btw)
Your conscious mind cannot possibly do this effectively at 40 bits of info per second and one thing at a time to be able to focus on. See the answer I have dogfishbird below!
