    Shawn

For basic chip do you advocate a shutdown or square clubface? Do you advocate using the same wedge for all chips? What do you use for the bump and run shot or long distance roll shot?

Your umbrella or suitcase analogy places the the palm at 90* to the shaft. Doesn’t the shaft follow the the
line formed by the base of your last three fingers, which forms an angle of approximately 115*

First of all, I want you to know I had my best golf performance ever for winter golf. I made 4 eagles which is pretty good for a 75 year old man. I credit my success to your teachings and thank you for them. But, lately I’ve started to hit the ball too low and my miss is to the left with a low draw. Would you say my grip is too strong or is my ball position too far back? Your recent videos call for a very strong grip, which doesn’t seem to work for me.

    Thanks again Ron

Hey Ron! You want to use the prediction process for the grip and club relationship as well as the ball position; please see “predict contact” and “the goldie locks series” and then see “the process series”

Shawn, I have an issue that is not directly related to this video but permeates my swing across the board. I tend to twist my lead foot as I transfer my weight. I twist so that my foot faces the target. I’m sure this is a power leak. I tried closing my stance with the lead foot, but still getting remnants of the twist. Is there a drill that can rectify this?

The walking drill dude! Do that till the cows come home! Plus the perpetual motion drill series just started with chips, then pitches this week then irons next week which will be sweet for you!
Also, please see the “kinetic chain series” which is really key as well as “pumping up the swing” video

Hi Shawn Love your stuff I am a long time follower of your advice
Way back perhaps 8 years . Since starting back after almost a year out I am struggling to get my left hand placed correctly. Whenever I hold the club like an umbrella my face rotates closed. I find myself fiddling with the grip to get the face square. Any thoughts that you feel might help.

your umbrella or suitcase analogy shows the shaft to be at 90* to the palm. Doesn’t the shaft follow the line at the base of the last three fingers, or at an angle of approximately 105* to the palm.

      Hi Ron!
We don’t do positions; they don’t work for most people; just focus on having the most secure grip with your lead hand. If it’s too much at 90 degrees, it won’t feel solid and if it’s too much diagonal in the palm it will feel week and wobbly. Which position feels the most secure wins! 😀👍

Shawn i’m a right hand golfer former D1 pitcher. I have a hard time keeping pressure where’d my right thumb pad overlaps the left thumb. The bigger my swing the bigger that instability. I have a natural tendency to let my right elbow get away from my body. Any thoughts or video suggestions?

Yes! After you watch “purpose of the backswing” here on premium, see 2 videos I did on youtube called “no more collapsing arms shawn clement” and “stop letting go of the club shawn clement” which are part of the same issue! You will enjoy a lot! Shawn

    Shawn,
Been struggling with Right to Left breaking putts in that I can’t seem to get my Right Hand out of the stroke – I tend to get anxious when starting the stroke and “Hit” the ball rather than stroking it resulting in a few 3 putts a round. I sometimes will resort to putting 1 handed almost with my Right Hand just resting on top my Left wrist but it’s not very consistent. I’m currently using an Arm-Lock putter and the standard Claw Grip. Any thoughts or suggestions or drills?

What you want to do is get a 6 pound sledge hammer and swing that back and through; you can’t shove or place that instrument! See “take a sledge hammer to your short game shawn clement” on youtube; and I did a putter video with the arm lock too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0oJhhez8yg

I notice that on some videos when you are outside you do a lot from the rough. Is that so you can see the ideal strike location through the taller grass? Would be good for practice. Also the front view of this video shows how far back in your stance off the trail toe. I have been having trouble pulling my shots to the left but its probably due to the club already turning over because its past the ideal impact point. That might also explain why I have a hard time getting forward shaft lean to obtain a better impact.

On chipping, because there is way less lag and agressive hip clearing, the ball has to be on the back foot to allow the hands to naturally hang in front of the ball for natural lag; it is also the only place to use momentum from as placing it in the center of the stance would force you to shove on the club to get it to catch ball first!

Yup that was the video that I have been trying to find. Where I first saw you close the face with a neutral grip and causes you to get the club square by the tilt. It also caused the shaft lean that I was looking for. So now using this and Goldilocks for ball position should make it happen. Thanks

As I am practicing this, I noticed a slight grip adjustment is needed for the chip. Different from the full swing, I move the index finger and thumb of the trail hand back up the shaft (connected more to the other fingers). This seems to give the ACU more stability to maintain the lower case “y” throughout the swing. Does this make sense?

Shawn I see videos when chipping to choke down on the club. For me I tend to choke down with longer clubs say a 5 iron and more of a normal hand position with a higher club such as wedge. Is this still the correct thinking?

What is the purpose of the grip down though? Are you trying to CONTROL the shot or does it give you the ability to whip the club with more velocity and less effort?

For some reason the ability to make the video full screen seems to have disappeared. Any particular reason. I have always found it useful.
