Hey Shawn! Just joined your premium site after following your YouTube for a while. I struggle with an upper body dominant swing that is generally more ‘at’ the ball than ‘through’ it. Your concepts of throwing the club, momentum towards target, etc make a ton of sense conceptually, but I’m having some mental difficulty getting my body to trust it and still not go right at the ball. My practice swings usually look different (ie better) than with a ball. Do you have any suggestions or drills for helping make this connection? Thanks!
Hey Garrett! Yes, please get to the “throwing the club” video and the “throwing series”-then you go to “predict contact” and “the goldie-locks series” and this will open things up for you.
to get deeper into it, see “pre-motor cortex series” and “target confirmation series” and then jump into our first “off season training series”
This will get you to the next level big time; then get back to me with any questions or concerns! 👍😀
Really enjoy your method of teaching the game. Spent so many years trying to learn the game from teachers who believe in the body part manipulation as the fix for all faults. Finally feel comfortable with my game. Club throwing drill has been a real help for my timing, tempo, weight shift and follow through. My biggest issue now is my driver. Can’t seem to get it. Constantly hitting my driver off or near the heel causing significant inconsistency. Watched driver drills on premium channel but still feel like my head gets ahead of ball in my swing and can’t seem to stop it. Am I missing something simple?
Gary from Arizona
Hey Gary! Have a look at the “blur of club” and then see “arc-blur unstoppable momentum” series where we also did a full session with the driver! This will help a lot and get you a couple extra references to help you predict how the tip of tee is in the way of this blur.
Shawn
Great video! Incorporating “compression” into the prediction process really caught my attention. I have certain clubs, shots that I have very low or zero confidence that I can pull the shot off with “compression”. I guess that’s a red flag that the shot I see is “not realistic” at that moment? So give it a go or maybe I need some practice or range time?
Also the slo mo part of the video with the comments on the movements really helped me to accept my perpetual motion swing as the real deal rather than thinking that it was defective in some manner and needed correction in the form of control or manipulation. So …swing is great, trust it and have fun playing and hitting the different shots!
Thanks and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
Um, i think Savvy just doesn’t want to admit that pops is a freakin’ GENIUS! The “paintbrush” is such cool way to get that “out there” feeling! Thanks Mr. Clement!
Hello Saif! With prediction process! See “predict contact” and “the goldie locks series” and if you have not seen our beginner series yet, please jump in to make sure you have the necessary fundamentals! 👍😀
This is a great topic. Right now I use the feeling of a hammer in my right hand hitting the spot on the ball that will send it into my picture. (It seems to work better than visualizing access with the club.)
When I feel like I have access to that spot, I feel like I am good to go….however it seems from this video that it is only good start because it lacks the feeling of the follow on action of throwing/compressing/sending water spray?
I am striking the ball with better direction but only modest increase in distance. It sounds like once you get confidence in your prediction/feeling the brain allows you to let go a bit more giving you more distance. Is this right?
This is the rub: if you are on a spot on the ball and don’t associate that as the INTERSECTION that you are exploding through into a full release well beyond where your eyes are parked, then you subject yourself to a default to the ball which will sap the juice out of the shot. Really feel like you are collecting the ball against that spot and releasing it well into the flight plan, which is the direction you want to start the ball with the peak speed a solid 3 feet past the ball.
I think I am making it more complicated Shawn. I’m in heavy sand fluffy but wet under the surface. Short shots with a high lip I seem to slam it into the lip of the bunker and if it gets out it goes nowhere. I’m trying to use less strain but seem to be straining way more than necessary with no return. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW, no problem with the plugged lie setup. Seem to do that with no issues. Thank you so much for all your continued support. You have revolutionized my approach to the game and now it is fun and enjoyable.
Hey Gary! Have you tried just spraying sand for a 1/2 hour to different parts of the green with no ball? Then place a plastic ball marker or poker chip down and blast a couple of those out and then put a ball on top of the poker chip or marker. This way, your brain has time to make the transition and SEE THINGS CLEARLY before you take the shot! 😀👍
Yes, that is the idea; but it is the weight of the club head that provides the momentum for this as the lead hand YIELDS out of the way of the trail hand BEING RELEASED out of pure self preservation! See “snap release polish” in premium and practice leading the parade!😀👍
Hi Shawn, what things can i focus on in the context of the cutting the grass task to gain more width, to swing high and far and to cut grass using more ground forces than upper body.
Hi Shawn, when I focus on the task of hitting through the door frame or cutting grass or peeling carrot, I often fail to follow through properly. My brain focuses on the task and once the task is done, it stops. As a result, my balls slice. Should I focus on proper finish instead of the task now, and let the task function be automatic? Thanks
What you need is the feel on the otherside of the task, the snap release! See “lead hand release” “trail hand release” “release fine tuning” and my favourite, “snap release polish” videos. Then see “predict contact” and “the goldie locks series” videos and finally, the « target confirmation series » enjoy!
hi Shawn, the arms in my backswing have never gone further than the point where you throw your club in this clip. Maybe i m too stiff or something else. I can make it further , with the arms parallel to the target line but then i have to bow my arms , it feels uncomfortable so my question is if it is important to get this position at the top . I m 62 years old , but still eager to learn the things that are important. Second question: What is the advantage of this position. Note: I finish my backswing concerning the turn, as you always keep on telling . Thx. Ernst
Hi Ernst! The key to the backswing is to have enough to be able to WHIP EASILY through the ball and towards the target! See the latest off season training and I believe it is in the # 4 or 5 where we do backswing focus where we do VERY SLOW-VERY RELEAXED-VERY BIG TURN-VERY WIDE ARMS and stop at the top. Then ask yourself, will it be easy to throw the club to the target with a whipping action from there?
Hi Shawn, great video! Is there another one where you go in deeper how you start the backswing? I see in all videos that you use your right knee to kick things off and would be great to learn your thoughts/thinking how to start the knee
Shawn,
In order for the release to occur, doesn’t there have to be a brake ( like a stop) in the motion of the upper body, thereby allowing the arm club unit to accelerate. If so, is it the lead leg applying force to the ground that causes this brake? As if the lead leg is pushing away from the target.
Thanks
Yes, see “pumping up the swing” and “feet together back to feet apart” videos as well as the latest 2 or 3 videos from the premium channel where I talk about the equestrian “lunge whip”
After going through the alinement looking at the shot I want and the potition of the ball all is good, but when I play the shot to make sure every thing is correct I unintentionally slow the swing down.Result high wide right. Practice swing is fine but put the ball there disaster. Is there acure?
Hi David! Haha, of course! It is called abandonment of control! See “lead hand release” and “trail hand release” and then “release fine tuning” then you must learn draws and fades and you want to start with the draw so see the “working the ball” video and then see “draw fine tuning”
when you try to “make sure” your brain freezes the body and the swing is sabotaged; it’s good for a dentist who needs to stay still when drilling a tooth but for golf it is like a swing of an axe, or a baseball bat! You don’t ever make sure when doing those activities. So see “using the weight in your swing-axe drill with savy” to deliver the draw shot, you will love the freedom and the compression!
