My right hand started to offer close the club face with him to follow. Tried making the right hand do nothing. It did not work. Changed the task to skipping a rock and problem solved. It is like the football but feels more accurate with regards to back contact and following carrot peel.
That sent me looking on YouTube. I did not find any that far back but did find “ridiculously easy golf” part 1and 2 from 11 years ago which was on point. You also had a great one on how hard to hit which married the skipping of the stone and heavy momentum perfectly.
It appears that your club is very “open” at the top of your swing. Is that true?
if so, you must have a lot of wrist/hand action at impact to square the clubface?
Hey Mark! Yes, my release pattern is 45 years old and one of the most efficient you will find; similar to Matt Wolff-except my grip as you can see is much stronger than his. I just have very limber wrists and it is just the way they hinge.
Hi Shawn ,
Hope you’re well. Looking forward to your next visit to Palm Springs.
I incorporated this drill into my new “waggle” during play. I simply setup and then hinge back my wrists to confirm my setup and take a waggle with my “axe”. I used it during my last round and I’ve never drove the ball better. I’ve seen a few tour players doing something similar. Now I think I understand what and why they are doing. Thinking of Justin Thomas and Ricky Fowler.
Gday Shawn. Just picked up a great nugget with my chipping. Making sure my club face is dynamically square at impact has stopped the ball bouncing sideways after it lands. Now they’re actually rolling true. Have you ever noticed this?
Hey Matt! Depends on path; you may have had a path that was a bit inside in the backswing which is common; have you seen our other videos with open faced chips?
Could have been yes.. Contact has always been good, but always had to deal with the ball spinning off line 1st/2nd bounce… bit hard to hole them when they do that!
Closing the face a tad is helping with those ones I want to roll out straight.. and I don’t have any issues with contact when I stay on task… I’m nipping them nicely
It seems like in the actual swing that the trail elbow never gets too much past the trail hip, and the trail arm does not straighten until after impact. Is this an accurate observation?
A straight lead arm alone should be maintaining the correct distance to ball, I assume?
Like this drill as well as the slam the garage door drill noted in comments also liked the note that Sav was coming out of posture. About a month in as a member hit a pure bliss 5I and 8I on the course. That feeling is addictive hope to feel it more often. I was trying to guide some shots and hold on to the release. Do I just need to focus more on the task?
Hey Michael! It is a “get ready to hammer through the doorframe move” or a “get ready to cut through the dandelion stem move” to get the arms in the right place to perform the task; always think task and let the body react to the task.
Excellent thanks Shawn… I’ve joined a few sites but you’re the only that genuinely seems to understand it or at least explain what you’re doing properly
Hi Shawn. I have a question on the position of the head, when doing this drill, and also when performing a conventional shot. At present I do the 15-20 degree turn and tilt of the head, to get in the proper position of going at the target. When I see you doing this drill, it appears you are not incorporating that pre setup head tilt….you tilt it when you get in the supporting the axe position. I want to know how we should setup the head for the drill and for a conventional shot. Should the head be rotating back, or should that be done in the setup?…Hope my question makes sense
Hi John! Mine is an evolved version of the head tilt; see also “hammer drill” video and get set up with a hammer to hammer a nail into a door frame and then do it with a golf club in your hands; it should feel and be very much the same.
Thanks, Shawn…will do
BTW, this drill more than any other, has enabled me to consistently get the hammer drill feeling and to focus on the throwing the stem to the target. Before, when there were a few errant shots in a round, I would occasionally get “careful” and revert to focusing on the ball. This drill and setup automatically gets my brain to focus out in front of me….. towards the target. Outstanding new drill you developed.
Hi Shawn, finding your teachings are helping me the most! Trying to understand the PMD and ‘feel the weight of arm club unit’. Do you adjust your set up height to match each club as the length changes? Any other videos you can point me to?
Hi Shawn, I just joined this incredible site last week and you are always emphasizing to focus on our target. Wouldn’t this new dandelion drill get us NOT to focus on the target and focus more down (ie. ball). My preference would be to release the entire hand-club unit towards the target/intermediate target with low effort/strain and high velocity.
Hi Norman! Like the “kinetic chain engagement series” part 6 of delivering the divots to the target, we are delivering the stem or the root of the stem into the direction you want to start the ball; so it is big time target oriented. You could say the same about the “throwing the club into the direction you want ro start the ball and predict that the stem is in the way too! They are both great and their goal is to get the action delivered THROUGH AND OUT TO THE FLIGHT PLAN and not stall at the ball.
Depends on the individual Paul; some need to close more on the fade believe it or not! See the “goldie locks series” and with a bit of practice, you will see what works best for you! 👍😀
Successful golf swings promote trust in my swing. Having a routine that produces a target, flight plan, intermediate point and task promotes successful golf swings. When I start a round my first 2-4 shots are usually “shaky” until I nut one and then I feel like I’m going to nut them all. Looking forward to building enough trust to start a round with solid shots.
Usually can and that helps but the delay between warm up and start of round or even slow play and having to wait a long time between shots will make things shaky again. Ha ha, you have improved my swing so much I’ve gone from short driver to longest and now have to wait and wait for playing partners to hit their second shot before I can hit mine. Am thinking that more time with improved swing is going to eventually give me trust in it (after reasonable warm up) to trust it at all times.
How do you keep from blacking out on the course? Intro to the video sounds like me. In my last round had black out moments in different areas 1st one a pop up drive then just a shank on back to back holes went to arc blur before shot and hit the next 8 fairways then I went 3 putt 4 putt on the next two holes then 2 putt or 1 putt rest of rd. Then shanked pitching wedge on next 2 holes after good drives. Next PW was good. Any other videos to watch. I will definitely try Marco drill
Hey Steven! See “target confirmation series” and all the “pre-motor cortex series” and the “goldie locks series” and implement one of the goldie locks series tools into your routine to keep the brain aware of the match between the set up and the shot!
Hmm; sounds like a lot of manipulating; when you refresh “target confirmation series” let me know what you need to focus on to that side of the ball-target side-to get the desired ball flight. You do not want to be stuck fidgeting in the impact area…
