Shawn, I have been out practising the legs together and one leg drill. However, even on these drills I hit fat. I think it is because after 35 years of hitting at the ball my brain does not want to let go. Can you direct me to videos that will help get through the ball. I have been throwing but still want to hit that darn ball.
If you have been throwing the club, (you must go out and actually do it!!) when you use the goldie locks from above the ball, then lower to top the ball then lower to THIN THE BALL.
KEEP THE ARMS AND CLUB HANGING FROM THE SHOULDER SOCKETS AND DO MOT LET THEM REST ON THE GROUND; just slightly off the ground and grazing the grass.
THE FOCUS AND PREDICTION: If you throw the club through the arc blur to the right of the IP for a draw, you PREDICT that the sole of the club will graze the grass and therefore hit the ball thin.
When you flush them, you will realize you need to be like 40% of tour players who never ground their clubs at address! 👍😀
My backswing is always collapsed by right elbow folding too much at the top, so the width of the backswing is shortened. Also, I figured that my shoulder turn is stop much earlier than my arm swing since my turn is only half of the 90 degrees. What should I do?
The best feel for the backswing is in the “lead hand release” video and use the backswing portion of the video; it is my favourite and actually it’s time I do a separate video for achieving proper “backswing status”. Enjoy it!
Is the illusion of alignment with longer clubs do to the distance the ball travels? It seems the shorter clubs hook/fade sooner because the ball travels a shorter distance
Shawn I noticed it appears that you use a diagonal stance for your draw and more of a normal stance for the fade when you line up left of your target. It also appears the ball position is more towards your lead foot for the fade and further back for the draw. Is that the actual case or is it just the angle of the diagonal stance that makes it appear that way? Could you clarify that and if there is a difference in the relative ball position give a ball park distance like a ball width, 2 ball widths etc.? I watched the videos for both slow motion draw and fade several times and couldn’t tell exactly what you were using in your setup for each. Do you normally get a lower, more penetrating ball flight on your stock draw than for the fade? Is your carry and roll distance significantly different for the different ball flights? I understand it is all relative to the direction in which you release the ball to start and the clubface closure determines the amount of fade or draw relative to that path. Could you be a bit more specific on when you are using the diagonal stance how that affects the ball position for the draw?
Hey DL! See
“great driver Nugget” which explains the reason behind the Diagonal stance and the reasoning behind the ball position as well. Here I am going for mid height on both and the camera angle on the fade will be a bit off to show the alignment from face on and this will distort the ball position’s appearance. Ball position cannot ever be determined by how much it is inside the lead heel, YOU ALWAYS WANT TO PLACE IT WHERE YOU FEEL YOU WILL CATCH IT ON THE WAY UP AND INTO THE DIRECTION YOU WANT TO START IT ON AND ONLY YOU CAN FEEL THIS!!!! See “goldie locks series” with ball position for the PURPOSE of ball position.
Love the slo-mo videos. Gives a real feel of the dynamic process for me , especially takeaway …turning the body and downswing…engaging the ground and the lag sequence. So smooth and effortless.
A long time ago you had me ‘crazy close’ the club face to produce square or slightly closed dynamic face at contact to protect from the over the top tendency and horrible slices. As my kinetic chain has become more ‘patient’ with better grounding and tempo I find the face alignment at setup is slightly closed for the draw and neutral for the fade.
On your setup with irons and driver the club faces look quite open at address for draw and neutral for fade, sort of counter intuitive. Is this true?
Still appears ball forward aim left for fade and ball back aim straight but throw to the right for draw. Correct?
Thanks again Shawn. Happy new year…
That is the optical illusion of PATH at the point of contact; always boils down to goldie locks: When you deliver THROUGH THE BALL AND OUT INTO THE PICTURE, what is the ball doing in the air? Then make adjustments based on that. Don’t worry about the looks of it as this will always fool you.
Hi Shawn just watched the Eagle session with savy getting better with AOA what ever that is and lag as my bag is mostly woods 13 to a 3 is it just ball position so I’m not hitting down to much with my woods i just think about throwing the club out to were i want the ball to start. Also if my right elbow brushes my body on the way down what is the cause not getting out of the way i know but why cheers Steve
The ball position with woods is going to be a tad more forward than with the irons by about a ball width. You will see in “kinetic chain facilitation series” where I send divots into the bush with both the 3 wood and 7 iron. The drone views in this series are awesome to watch! 😀👍
Shawn, I have been away for a bit.
I noticed on Track Man that my club is 4 to 10 degrees closed to the path every time. It is pretty much the same for all clubs. The result is either a hard draw or hook. (for the last 3 indoor sessions) I do have a ‘strong’ grip but when I extend my arms straight out the toe is just a little bit over. When I try a weaker grip I feel disconnected.
Has my body gone quiet? Can you point me to a video(s) or just make a recommendation for a task to engage the torso? Is it something else?
Hey Jon! Yes, the first thing you need to confirm is did you get the peak speed in the direction you wanted to start the ball or did it peak at the bottom? See “target confirmation series” for that one. Also, here is a sneak peek at tomorrow’s you tube video which is great for this too! https://youtu.be/apXe9yfe6Q4. Enjoy!
Hey Shawn, I noticed your hands are almost at head height (in both draw & fade videos), if not above your head. After I went over how I take away my driver my hands are definitely not that high, so is this something I should be trying to achieve or is this something that naturally just happens? I never really looked into the hands & the height, so would love to hear your insight. Cheers, Brian
You will see a great video on this on Wednesday, so stay tuned! You will also want to see “backswing levitation” and the backswing portion of the “lead hand release” video as well as the “throwing series” which shows throwing all the different lengths of clubs and the adjustment in feel that the body does when throwing something shorter vs longer.
I like the way the slow mo videos shows how much Shawn releases the club. Still working on consistent release with the driver, but hit a bunch of laser iron shots Saturday in the drizzling rain to win my 1st Golf Club weekly golf tournament since switching to Wisdom in Golf with a net 70. hello Shawn! What is the technique to use for ball position and practice swing when I tee up the ball on a par 3 using my hybrid or fairwood? Is it like te driver? I have difficulties with these shots . merci 🙂 and I am so grateful with all your generosity sharing your knowledge.
Hi Hélène! You would only use a very low tee and play just like you were in the fairway because the hybrid and fairway woods are designed to hit the ball off the ground.
I’m having a little trouble. The side of my right middle finger sometimes gets split open. I’m pretty sure that I’m gripping the club correctly. Am I missing something or is it just that i may need thicker grips. I currently have standard size grips
I sometimes get this split when it gets dry; when you mishit on the toe, the club will twist and torque the skin around the finger; TAPE! 😝😝
They go through industrial quantities on tour!
Hi Shawn been reading loads of comments now know what AOA is. When you say the bottom of the woods run along the ground this is after it has collected the ball as i sent you video me hitting a 7 wood you said it was OK taking a divot after the ball. You not tell me yet why my elbow sometimes brushes my side as asked in my previous comment cheers Steve
Hi Steve! My elbow brushes my side often too; it is all part of delivering the swing. And yes, divots are after the strike of the ball with all clubs EXCEPT THE DRIVER. See “kinetic chain facilitation series” and “unstoppable momentum divot” as well as the “football drill series” for the elbow. Enjoy!
Hi Shawn been watching your chipping videos as i used to use the hinge and hold method your way is the bollicks I’ve got out of everything divots mud long grass and puddles. Been also practicing hitting my 3 wood off mat into net my little launch monitor tells me my best shot was 292 yards with 117 club speed don’t think that could be right normally hit it about 210 just want to thank you for all the the ideas you have to make us play better cheers Steve
Right on Steve! I have seen some amazing transformations in my time and I would not be surprised with yours! Once the human machine gets a hold of the feel for a task that lights up the kinetic chain, LOOK OUT! 👌😀👍💪
