I’ve always kind of wondered what to do with my trailing hand thumb. In this video, it’s kind off of to the (in)side. Any problem with that trailing thumb to be on top? Kind of similar to the lead hand thumb? Also, I liked your description of keeping the trail index finger supporting the club at the top and end of the swing. I don’t think I have been doing this and it seems to help during my brief swing practice so far.

Shawn Clement

Hi George! The thumb can easily be placed to the side when you get the proper hook of the index finger on the grip to apply that “knife pressure” through the grass; have you tried against the door frame yet?

Jeremy Fuller

Hi Shawn. I told my golf coach that my grip was a problem but he always said it looked fine. However at impact the force of the club hitting the ball causes the club fly around in my hand or my trail hand index and thumb would fall right off the club. The place where I practice has launch monitors and impact cameras and I can see the club face fly violently open or closed at impact. He told me light pressure but you recommend more pressure. I’ve noticed that I start to get pain and muscle fatigue in my lead and trail hand after a few perpetual motion swings with more grip pressure. But I don’t have the issue with the grip moving in my hand anymore. I don’t feel this fatigue when I’m playing or at the range. Just when I’m doing perpetual motion with no break between swings.

On a separate note, the video about the supporting the club with the index solved a lot of problems for me. I’d get really painful calluses on my trail hand thumb before

Shawn Clement

Good stuff! If the contact with the club is off the toe of heel, the club will turn in your hands; secure grip-ready for compression against the target is key. And yes, everything you feel is good but check on the “release” videos to make sure you are not preventing a full release of the club which would cause this fatigue…

At 1:59 you mention chip takeaway. I haven’t been through all of these vids, but I wonder where else do you expand on that takeaway concept? I don’t feel the same thing in my takeaway. I feel like the trail arm folds a little sooner and wonder if that’s how I get a little stuck.

Shawn Clement

This is all about allowing the lower body to heave the arm-club unit into the backswing; see the best drill for backswing width in the “lead hand release” and the latest “lead hand release backswing” video! You will see the “chipping” video as well!

I’m having a little trouble. The side of my right middle finger sometimes gets split open. I’m pretty sure that I’m gripping the club correctly. Am I missing something or is it just that i may need thicker grips. I currently have standard size grips

Shawn Clement

I sometimes get this split when it gets dry; when you mishit on the toe, the club will twist and torque the skin around the finger; TAPE! 😝😝
They go through industrial quantities on tour!

George Jarrett

SAME!!! Glad it’s not just me. Tape seems to help, but my GOD it hurts when it happens!

Shawn Clement

Yes, like a paper cut!!😅😅

This was my first video I added to my favorites, but its built on so much more. If you are just starting your Wisdom journey, I encourage you to use these early sections on Grip, Posture and Setup as your foundation. In the first 3 weeks of adopting Shawn’s methods I have seen vast improvement, more importantly what i need to correct moving forward. I don’t fight the notion of a super strong grip, don’t regrip my club as much, and use my index finger to knife the ball towards target. All items that i was oblivious to before. Thank you to Shawn and the staff. Going Premium has been a game changer!

Shawn Clement

Right on Scott! That is exactly what you want to do, thank you for confirming this for others to have faith in our process! 👌👍😀
