Ok now I am lost, I watched the grip series and have been practicing having my left thumb go straight down the grip at 12 oclock, so is now not even down the grip but more around it?
Hey Jonathan;
what you don’t realize is that it can be different for everyone! The FORMATION OF THE HANDS ON THE CLUB does not change; it is a GRIP-CLUB FACE RELATIONSHIP.
If you watch the “draw fine tuning” video, you will see a way to adjust that grip-club face relationship for you.
The bottom line is that when you let the momentum release you in the direction you want to start the ball, that the ball flies the way you want it to. I just got back from a week in Austin TX where the father had a semi-strong grip with an open face and the son had a semi strong grip with a closed face. Both are hitting 3 yard draws with it.
So you just can’t look at it the way you were with “the thumb has got to be there and the index here and the face there…” deal. The purpose is that it feels secure and ready to compress and stay together through the swing and support the swing and shape of the shot.
Thinking about this grip, Shawn and have a question. In other videos, you mention that the trail index finger that knifes the grip helps put pressure on the back of the ball. But, with this grip, it seems like that doesn’t happen because at impact with the hands forward, that right hand is more under the club. Am I thinking about this correctly?
It seems this way but you still want the knife index finger! 👍👍
I tried this today and felt like I was flinging the ball off the trigger finger-I hit the ball almost 3 clubs further-with a draw and sometime a terrible hook, lol! my right leg is almost 2 inches longer then my lead left leg-I have an artificial lead hip and 2 fake knees-however, I still felt like I could rip the ball (skip the stone off the water) out to my target-and I felt so low to the ground and very powerful!
I started to let my right (trail) elbow stay in as I turned back and it helped me stay organized and emphasized the spring of the trigger finger. It probably cost me some distance but it was a money game and the ground is so hard at our course in TN that I needed some control! I am 64 and the guys let me play form the 3/4 combo tees even though I should really play from the threes but today I was driving the ball even with our longest hitters which was very cool!
We won 3/4 balls and $$$-I reached a lot of greens today and realized I cannot putt!-but the trigger finger gave me great control of my chips which was very cool-I missed a lot of putts on my way to an 84- (46-39).
Wow Patrick! What a great day! And the best part is the stuff you left on the table for next time! 👌👍💪. Make sure you see all our putting videos in here; more money to be earned! 👍😀
I’ve just started with this type of swing here in the DR. I have a big blister on my left thumb and base of right index figure. Any suggestions to what I may be doing wrong?
You are definitely holding the club improperly; there should be no friction on the hands when swinging; see “grip” and Grip part 2 here on premium and see the latest “5 ways to guarantee proper grip in lead hand shawn clement” on youtube
