Hey Shawn, been working on stronger grip and better release since your awesome swing analysis! Watching videos like crazy and hitting 100 balls a day.
I jumped from 70s to mid 80s in club speed with my 6i. I even saw 108 pop up once. The downside is nearly all of my balls have an insane hook.
My feels – my trail hand almost feels underneath the club, leaning much more to the right, thinking primarily about the release after the ball, but also feeling a release in my backswing.
I’ve tried modifying my grip to open it almost to square, but I think once I do my lean at address, I’m adjusting the club face to square. I’ve also tried putting the ball more forward in my stance, but none of these seem to be straightening out my ball flight.
Any ideas? Playing Pinehurst for the first time this weekend so trying to get into reasonable shape, haha!
Hey Jon! See “fade fine tuning” and grip part 2 please! Some of my students do very well with the same grip as Matt Fitzpatrick; weak right and strong left; it all depends on your own anatomy and how the shoulders come forward on your body. So do some goldie locks with your grip’s strength; on each individual hand like in the goldie locks series-grip club relationship” video
I get very confused Sean, one moment I am trying to trim weeds sweeping across the ground, and here you use the hockey stick and the sander to create pressure into the ground which looks and feels more like a downward blow, kind of trapping the ball with a large divot.
Since I started using your systems I (a 10 handicap) haven’t even come close to breaking 90. My shots are flat and fat, I feel so confused over the ball and have lost the feel of what a good shot is.
I almost feel overloaded and overwhelmed with info, I wish you laid out a progressive plan of videos to follow. I just look around the site looking for answers and get more and more confused.
Hey Jonathan! It’s about time you reach out! EVERYONE IS SO DIFFERENT!!
best thing to do is this: Let’s do a swing analysis together and see where you are and let me point you to the tasks that pertain to your mindset and personality! Let’s get you out of this funk! Email me asap at [email protected] and send me a face on and down the line of your 7 iron and tell me what the focus is just before you take the shot.
This is a great video Shawn! I strungle to get the face shut when hitting up on driver…i have not been focused on my target and this video reminded me of that…but with the target being higher so I can swing up on it…is getting the face shut a common challenge?
Correct! The more up you swing, the more closed the grip and club face needs to be and also depends of the club you have; some need to close less than irons and many need to close more. Sounds like you need the latter! 😀👍
Also keep polishing your full release in the direction you want to start the ball with full abandon and ease. If you have not done so yet, please see all the “release” videos!
also, I did a video on youtube for this called “most overlooked detail with driver”

Thanks Shawn, I appreciate your speedy reply!
Shawn,
I just want to thank you. I’ve been playing with a neutral grip for over 15 years and had an average handicap of 22. During that time I only managed to break into the 80s once. After switching to the stronger grip, which gave me 20 additional yards on each iron, and using your chipping techniques, I’ve had major improvements! My last three rounds were; 88, 87, and an 86. That 86 would’ve been better if it didn’t take me three strokes to get out of one bunker. The ball was plugged. Question is this, once in awhile I’ll have shots that start online correctly, but will end up missing dramatically to the left (I’m a righty). What suggestion or video would you recommend?
Best Regards,
Rich Silverio
Hi Rich! Great stuff! You will realize that you are not defective and can trace your errant shots to your focus just prior to hitting the shot; so brush up on your routine with the “process series” and then see “pre-motor cortex series” and then see “target confirmation series” to make sure you are staying with the shot. If you are staying with it, and getting through the ball on your shots with the peak speed towards the target past the ball, then you want to schedule a video analysis with me and I will point you in the right direction.
keep up the great work! Shawn
Shawn I’m struggling with the amount of closing the face. I know you said you have about a 20° closed face on one of your videos but I don’t know how much to close my face. Is it the same with all clubs? Do I simply close the face and try to see how square the face is by lowering the club to the ball? Also how much body tilt should be applied?
Hi Alejandro! Sorry I missed this comment! To answer for everyone, please see “the goldie locks series” and the “predict contact” video and then see “tilt mile markers” video! 👍😀
