In your stock chip, with the hands leading the club head and the significant shaft lean, isn’t this prone to exposing the leading edge of the club and makes you prone to digging behind the ball?
I ask because I want to know how you do this if its a tight lie.
Thanks!
PS – the girl behind you at 5:29 🙂 hahaha
This is why we chip with a slightly open club face; you cannot have a square to closed face when chipping for that reason; and it will not affect direction at all; too much loft for that.
There is definitely a sweet spot for how forward the hands can be when chipping; too far forward will dig for sure but not forward enough is a chip yip and scrape in the making.

Shawn I’m loving this drill for all clubs except the wedges. I’m hitting the hosel a lot. I’m checking distance to ball with the blur but still top shanking primarily the 60 degree. Thoughts?
I have seen this a few times; it just means that your backswing is still too flat for the wedges;
Option 1-practice ball below feet with an 8 iron
Option 2- single length clubs; think about it! My wedges are all the same length as my 9 iron; which is 1/2 inch long which is an 8 iron. LW-SW-GW-PW-9 ARE ALL SAME LENGTH.

Wow! LOVE that football drill which involves pulling the elbow towards the chest to initiate the backswing. The downswing sensation gave me the feel of letting the weight fall, and the club released so nicely. Thanks!
Yeah man! It loads so nicely and releases all by itself; very cool part of the anatomy!
I watched these videos today and had to get out on the course to try it out…it really did make it so easy to swing into the picture. It was so cold…but played 5 holes even par…nice birdie putt on last hole from about 15ft, so figured it was a good time to stop.
Only bogey on a par three, trying to hit the high fade and it dropped a little left (the wrong way). Overall, really excited to play more but looks like cold weather is here for a bit.
Love this series; adopted this permanently in my swing and feel so much more structure in the swing; great stuff Russ! Nothing like waiting in anticipation for some weather to go out and play; love it!
Hi Shawn,
Very interesting to see it this way. I have to give it a try. You spoke of having it easier for other clubs because you have clearance and might get harder for wedges if you don’t adjust clearance enough.
Maybe this is also where single length irons will help because you only need one swing (one set up = one clearance).
Anyway, very interesting! Thanks for the insight. Beautiful as always.
