When practicing arms falling in front of me, I get the distinct feeling that my lower body is waiting for my upper body (arm club unit) to fall. In other words, it seems opposite of that sage advice of starting the downswing from the ground up. Is this feeling correct?
You want to practice arms falling PAST YOU and towards the direction you want the ball to start!
Really feel the body react and get out of the way of the heavy arms falling all the way into the finish!
Shawn – my right side is still crashing the party, even with the driver. When I preset (drill) with the arms in front, club parallel to target line, then go back and through, I pure it most times with irons. I cannot consistently do this from normal setup, backswing, and downswing. As soon as my right elbow contacts right side, bad things happen unless I manipulate clubface at impact. It’s frustrating too!
Are you trying to make the right elbow come into contact with the right side?? This is something you hear a lot in golf and this is something that should NOT be done!
See “football drill series” on premium and on youtube, see my latest videos on top 5 things not to do in golf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9fmj6ke1-g
Yes. Was told long ago that the greats (e.g., Hogan) adducted their upper right arm, at start of downswing, to get their right elbow in front of right side. I probably have done this also to avoid OTT, as you describe in the 5 things-to-avoid video. You appear to clear the body by rotating your torso, which makes sense to me now, but will take time for me to do (especially under pressure!).
Make sure you see “throw the club” video on premium; you cannot go OTT when throwing the club to the target; but OTT is necessary when throwing the club to the ball! Like going bowling and instead of releasing the ball down the alley towards the pins, you release it into the floor of the alley below you and make a big dent…just before they kick you out! 😂😝
Are there two catapults in the downswing, the first powered by the rear end and the second powered by the shoulders at about 7:30 which slings and releases the second pendulum. I seem to have trouble with my woods and hybrids in consistently keeping the kinetic flow at this point of my downswing, but when I do I carry the ball much further.
I would not say the shoulders as they are pretty fixed in there; but the legs to ground is the delivery of the second pendulum in the wrists; see “golf has 2 pendulums shawn clement” on youtube;

Shawn – are you opening and closing the face of the woods/driver for draws and fades? I tend to overcook the fade to a slice when I open the face of the driver.
This is why I always say: close the face a bit less for the fade; it should be no more than 2 degrees open THAN YOUR DRAW GRIP.
Shawn,
I’ve been making good contact recently for driver and irons but I am leaking shots both left and right. As a result I’m less confident with committing to a shot shape and overall accuracy. I blame it on not having a consistent set up with ball position and grip. I tend to fidget with both of these. Do you have any drills/ visual aids for repeatable ball position and grip?
Thanks,
Tom
Oohhh yes! You must have the ability to predict the shot’s outcome BASED ON YOU DELIVERING YOUR ACTION-TASK TO TARGET.
See our “predict contact” and “goldie locks series” of 4 videos
When you stay on task to target, this will keep your center steady; but if you are unaware that your center is moving (sternal notch) around, then you get disconnected from the delivery to target and then default to the ball.
See “video 4” of consistency series which is “mile markers for direction”; then “mile markers for balance” and “mile markers for contact”
All the best!! Shawn
Hi Shawn,
When you close the face in video 1 Do you close the face and then grip the club? Or do you close the face after you have your grip already on the club?
Thx. Tim
You always close the face first; then grip it normally;
The grip is round because you need to be able to adjust the face depending on how much draw or fade is involved in the shot; Shawn
