  • From CLARENCE TRAYWICK on DRIVER BALL LOGO ARC-BLUR-FAIRWAY FINDER!

Hi Shawn, I seem to have better results with my hands slightly behind or middle of my stance and ball forward on my driver, however I noticed your hands are at the ball and clubhead center of your stance. I also saw of a video buy a guy called Mr.Shortgame who suggested hands should be middle of stance or slightly behind? What’s your thought on this as it doesn’t seem the face has to be closed.

Hi Clarence! When you deliver the action task in the direction you want to start the ball, if the club head gets there before the ball, then it will be a disaster; so the key here is to facilitate the kinetic chain engagement. When you manipulate the club during the swing, the brain tries to shut down the body to facilitate the task of manipulating, cancelling the weight shift and hips clearing…not the desired result. So what we want to do is use the weight of the arms and club to perform the task of sending tee tips to target with driver. You want to stay far away from any kind of placing or steering or strenuous acts with the club or body parts. And as far as the grip and club face is concerned, because it cannot be the face only, the key here is when you deliver your action task to the direction you want to start the ball, is the ball flying in the air the way you want it to? So see “fade fine tuning” and “draw fine tuning” as well as “predict contact” and the “goldilocks series” videos.

Hey Shawn! Been working alot on my game and feeling im striking the ball alot better, but just cant seem to get rid of my outside/in swing path. Not sure where to turn or what drills would best help me fix this! Thanks!

Hey Gerald! Ok, you are striking it better but what is the flight doing? Are you starting it on the line you want and is it curving the way you want it to? Are the divots deep or shallow? Is the flight of the ball too low or too high? Give me an example with a 7 iron; what does a successful 7 iron shot look like to you?

    • From Gerald Prowse on OVER THE TOP | DEFENSIVE PLAY

Typical shot with a 7 iron is usually pretty high and sweeps from left to right. There tends to be a lot of side spin. Divots show that im coming over the top on it. Thanks for the help!

Ok, that helps! First thing you need to do is learn how to HOOK THE SNOT out of the ball by closing the face of the club past 45 degrees. Set up with a ball on a low tee with the 7 iron. You will look down on the club and ball and feel very strange. Eyes will be on the sliver of grass between the leading edge of the club and the ball. Imagine teeth on the club’s leading edge ready to saw through the tee from toe to heel and the task is going to be to whip through this sawing action in the direction over the intermediate point right there in front of the ball no more than a foot away. You want to be able to hook 5 to 10 shots way left and see the ball curve to the left as well; these will be pull hooks. THEN, the brain can PREDICT that when you close the face that much, there WILL BE a curve to the left. NOW CAN SWING TO THE RIGHT OF THE INTERMEDIATE POINT AND KNOW THAT THE BALL WILL COME BACK ON TARGET-OTT GONE!!😀👍
See “working the ball” and “draw fine tuning” as well as “how to match backswing to ball direction” and really polish the “release” by searching the word “release” in the search box and see all of them as this will allow you to do this without the extremely closed face.

Hey Shawn, when would be the proper timing for lead heel to lift? I assume it would be different with each club? My timing feel off and I sometimes forget to lift my heel when I’m playing::

Hi Nate!! Ok, first, you can’t be thinking about that. 😝
second, get really good at the “walking drill” and the 6th video in “kinetic chain facilitation series” where I am walking and sending grass divots into the trees; when you do this well, simply observe how your survival machine does it and how it needs to pick up the foot to take the step forward but also use the ground to deliver the divot after it plants. Then do “perpetual motion drill series” which is a stationary walk to blend this into your swing! Tada!

    Hi Shawn,

Can you try to explain to me why I’m seeing more distance and control with the fade. I have a natural draw and just got tire of hitting one or two hooks per round. I lost a couple of tournaments last year because of this hook that shows up. I really committed to learning the fade this year and now I rarely try to hit a draw anymore. I hit a draw when the shot calls for it. On most tee shots I just aim left and fade back into the middle. What is don’t understand is the distance. I played Duran in Viera Florida today and this is actually the course I attended your clinic years ago. I have played here many times because my in laws live right down the street. I live in Atlanta now so I don’t get to play as much. Today I hit a fade on almost all my drives because most of the holes here mover left to right. What surprised me was the distance I was getting compared to the draw from I normally play. I don’t get it, what would cause a fade to go further? Is it because my draw was a result of a closed setup and bad alignment? I just feel like I can control the fade so much more. It either just holds its line or fades a tiny bit. It never goes left like a hook. I shot an 80 today and had 33 putts. I just couldn’t make any birdies. I feel like this was my best ball striking round ever. I picked my spot and then sent my momentum just left of it each time. So much fun today. I’m never trying to hit it straight again. I was really struggling before I subscribed to the premium channel again. Came in second in my first tournament after going back to your methods. Thanks again.

Way to go Scott! When you play the ball a tad more forward for the fade, you get a bit kore club speed and because of the new ball design, there is no difference in distance between fade and draw anymore for the same speed. Most good players have a couple more MPH with fade plus it just fits the human eye better as you see the target more comfortably and make a more confident pass. Congrats on the solid play!!

Thanks, I do feel more comfortable when I set up for a fade. Mainly because I know it’s not going left.

This is a great video Shawn! I strungle to get the face shut when hitting up on driver…i have not been focused on my target and this video reminded me of that…but with the target being higher so I can swing up on it…is getting the face shut a common challenge?

    • From Shawn Clement on Grip & Arm Motion

Correct! The more up you swing, the more closed the grip and club face needs to be and also depends of the club you have; some need to close less than irons and many need to close more. Sounds like you need the latter! 😀👍
Also keep polishing your full release in the direction you want to start the ball with full abandon and ease. If you have not done so yet, please see all the “release” videos!
also, I did a video on youtube for this called “most overlooked detail with driver”

merci Shawn.

Hey Shawn, Finally realized what feel the weight of the arm club unit meant [auto momentum/kinetic chain], in-fact Mu’s [first couple of swings] was a great example, this to me personally meant lot lower in my stance and the kettle bell worked its magic, it felt awkward at first but realized my stance and how close the club was to me was the issue…ground breaking, as this can fix my iron swing as well [jack knife helped, but this drove home the point]….maybe its just me that had the eureka, but if anyone else out there is like me…

    Hi Shawn
First I want to thank you I have been an on-again off again member over the last few years and you have helped me move from an 8 handicap down to a zero cap and I am struggling a little right now with confidence with the release, let the wrist go and whip vs holding the hands and control but always feeling like I am not hitting full potential? however, I do know I am loving the game like never before
    Thank you!

Awesome! That is a sweet deal!
The prediction process is where this needs to go; sometimes if you don’t feel comfortable over the ball and hit the shot anyways, it will never pan out very nicely. So brush up on the “goldie locks” series and the “flow state series” and then see our latest “stick the finish despite the ball” series for some polish!

Shawn, you talk about tasks. My trouble begins when I default to the ball as you know, rushing backswing and swaying to hit the ball. Task to hit inside 1/4 out to the right etc….low success percentage but. NOW….My practice and success comes with feeling the ACU( major initiator)->, low effort out of the way backswing and then with my head stable behind the ball and eyes on the front of the ball I can get the ground with my lead leg naturally and allow a kinetic chain , confirmed by practice blur, to throw the club with ball-grass-dirt intent through ( always) an intermediate point. I need my eyes to confirm the task making the sequence more predictable. Not too many swing thoughts. Just a visual confirmation and balanced swing out there. Of all the scores of lessons I’ve seen and had through you I find these are essential to my improvement and enjoyment of the game. Thanks, JM.

  • From Josh Vogt on DIAGONAL SERIES PART 3-LONG IRONS AND FAIRWAY WOODS

Hi Shawn, Thank you for putting together this video series. Since joining your premium site, (2 weeks) i was able to post my lowest score today – 10 stroke difference. ( normally a mid ninety player. Shot an 85, no gimme putts or mulligans lol, even with posting an 8 on a hole – tree trouble.) The diagonal stance series tied everything together so I think I can go even lower now) Your method has really improved my game 100 fold and I’ve tried everything. Stack and tilt, conventional, one plane, etc. Nothing worked for me until you. Thanks again for all your work!!

Hi Shawn, as always, great video.
When getting behind the ball for the draw, does it matter that my shoulders are not “aligned” with my foot line?
    Thanks!

    • From Shawn Clement on FADE AND DRAW ADVANCED OPTIONS

Hi Nate! That is correct! The feet are aligned “parallel left of target” and the pelvis and rib cage are “pre-turned” behind the ball setting the knees, hips and shoulders slightly to the right for the right handed player.
