Why do we start with a closed face?

Hi Darryl! To be able to swing all the way through the ball and into the direction we want to start the ball. Same Idea as hockey (hockey stick has a big curve on it) and Jai Alai and Lacrosse…See “predict contact” and the “goldilocks series” in the grip and club face video.

Hey Shawn, love your content. I have been hitting my driver so much better since finding your YouTube channel.
I think my next big breakthrough will come when I can get my trail elbow to lead the hands a bit better, I have a tendency to get a little stuck and I end up over the top. Although I have been hitting my driver 280 and pretty darn straight I guess it just means there’s room for more improvement which I am so stoked about

What are your best drills for that?

Also are there any swing speed training devices you recommend?

  • From Brad Hoffman on DRIVER FOR ACCURACY

I have been utilizing this technique more and more and finding very little loss in distance, but making strides in control. I love the width that it brings and being able to use the grass on my practice swings as a gauge. When I first started your program, I utilized a very strong grip and closed face as it was taking my slice to a playable fade. Now that I have been working this program for over a year now, I feel like my natural swing is progressing nicely, but causing more hooks. I feel as if I need to weaken the grip, but feel very uncomfortable holding the club only slightly closed versus closed like I am driving a nail in the ground with an overhead swing. Is this just something I should take to the range and Goldilocks?

    • From Shawn Clement on DRIVER FOR ACCURACY

Fantastic! Yes, you do not want to feel like you are hanging on to not hook; you want to feel that you can let the club fully release your arm anatomy like in the “release” videos. It will not take you long to adjust, and every time you do, either more closed or more open, it will be smaller and smaller increments. The club always feel off balance when you make the adjustment, but that is temporary.

  • From Frank Zoff on Putting - Stroke & Distance Control

hey Shawn, having a consistent issue with my putter. my putter path seems to always want to veer left on follow through (creates pulled puts). Not sure why. im trying to let the arms hang but you have to bend the elbows so not quite like an iron. Also, should i try and create more of arc or a straight back and through?

    • From Shawn Clement on Putting - Stroke & Distance Control

Straight back and through does not exist; don’t even try! 😝
the line on the ball is great and needs to be in relation to the alignment of momentum; then you can do a PMD beside it and see the blur of the line on the putter and see that it matches the lines on the ball. Then bring in, see the ball roll in from the last 4 feet at the speed you need and let it go.

just looking up my PING CA 70 putter and it looks like it made for slight arc, straight back.not sure if that matters.

Hey Shawn, this really illustrated what it means to keep the club in front and not fall behind. You’d think it should be obvious, but spatially it’s easy to get it twisted. Also, the additional view was extremely helpful! I was able to see what great lag this produced.

    Can’t wait to try it.

    Thanks very much,

When I take a backswing it’s more my shoulder under my chin than the bicep

Does this indicate anything in a vacuum? Head tilt a little off?

  • From Matthew Costello on The Slot for Easier Access to the Target

Shawn one thing I’ve discovered playing around with this, is feeling the trail arm get into the slot through the release helps prevent turning to face the target a hair early

I’m always trying to stay with the IP, but there’s some shots / spots on the course where it gets hard. Reminding myself to throw the club through the ball into the slot on the release side has helped tremendously.

I can really feel the width. Like the club is stretching my arms out to the target. Could be the “11th commandment” of over the top from your classic series!

Also seems to automatically maintain my inclination to the ground. The club blur looks like it got longer and flatter if that makes sense.

Let me know how you make out!

  • From Matthew Costello on GRIP PRESSURE POLISH

Shawn I recently switched to standard size grips and I’m thinking that was a mistake. Despite the recent good ball striking I have some shots where I feel the club moving around and I feel like I have to really exert effort to clamp down on the club

I wear a large glove and my hand measures 9 inches from tip of middle finger to the crease in my wrist

What size grip do you use, and is midsize or even jumbo worth a try?

    Go to comment
    • From Shawn Clement on GRIP PRESSURE POLISH

I use a standard MCC plus 4 which is non tapered and have 3 wraps under it. So between midsize and standard. My glove size is large too. Sounds like you are Mid Size MCC plus 4!

    • From Matthew Costello on GRIP PRESSURE POLISH

      Holy Moly Shawn!!

The firmer grip pressure combined with the MCC+4 midsize w 2 wraps was a complete and total game changer

Dispersion completely shrunk. Draw was back on the driver. Could feel the compression in my PMD and then just Witnessed that lead hand yield for the trail hand to throw the club head with maximum velocity and low effort to the target

The ball was just absolutely rocketing with all clubs on a line

Even my misses when I’d open a little and get the arms behind me turned into gentle fades down the middle.

Unbelievable. Light bulbs going off all over the place. Club championship in 2 weeks we are taking it !

I feel really silly right now

So the lead hand effectively turns on the brakes so the trail hand can add the speed through impact? The wrist shot analogy really clicked with me. You could incorporate this easily into the throwing tasks too. Almost pretending it’s an under arm lacrosse throw and you’re trying to fling the ball off the club face towards the target, w that lead hand stopping and letting the trail hand really fire against a firm left side.

I’ve always had both hands working in the same direction.

Backswing the trail hand would put the brakes on then?

This is really cool and seems to make a lot of things click

Aren’t you glad I’m back w these questions Shawn 😂

Well that is new information for me ha. I’ve struggled with thin shots and occasionally dragging the handle, using the lead hand a brake and the trail hand as the gas pedal through the ball to the target is awesome!

I’m going back through all the fundamentals and this one jumped out! Any other good follow up vidoes to this one? Thanks!!

    Shawn,
Thank you for recommending this video. It’s so intuitive once you feel this. It’s truly letting go of control that I think will be my roadblock with this at first. Prediction process and flight plan are going to be the most inportsnt thing for me

Along with full commitment. But I get “it” now.

I’m in the same boat as Mathew, except the casting a fishing pole task is for me. I’ve seen this video numerous times, and I never thought I should be consciously doing the push/pull motion with the lead hand and trail hand. I feel like the release has been my biggest weakness, but would occasionally get a desired ball flight with a very closed club face/strong grip paired with the right swing plane. Last night while practicing on the course I had this epiphany after watching this video (again) hours before.
That being said, once I start getting a feel for this, does it remain a conscious effort? Or do I just work on it consciously until I get the feel and let the subconscious take over?

Brad you are my spirit animal. I was dragging the strong grip and using some weird body motions to get the out to in path. Always led to blocks and hooks w driver. Manageable w irons. This has really generated some extra pop but more importantly has tightened my dispersion. Cast it from the top “out there” and let the hands provide leverage against each other. Very powerful feeling!

Great question Brad! Plug it into the prediction process: you are about to let momentum release you into the direction of the intermediate point; when you do, does it feel like the grip and club relationship will compress the ball into that direction and get the ball to curve in the air the way you want of does it feel too weak to hold or trap the ball into that picture?

    • From Brad Hoffman on Grip & Arm Motion

Thank you. Trying this out on the course yesterday took a bit of focus on that aspect, but it greatly helped close the club face. I have thought that I was letting momentum release me as my wrist hinge seemed to be present, but I am thinking I was missing that anchor, despite all the lead hand and trail hand release exercises.

Very possible! See “bolted and centred” and check out the downhill shots and the one leg drill for a braced anchor and the uphill shots and ball below feet for the trail foot anchor!

The suggested videos are on my list of must watch. Thank you.
The interesting thing is that in the 20, 40, 60 yard shot video you mention it working with full swings. I often use that swing in par 3s when I want a low flighted wedge and use it up to a 7 iron. I have a hole at my home course where there is about a 60 yard wide corridor with OB on both sides. I often use that swing from the video with my 8 iron which is typically a 165 yard club with roll out, but end up with 180-190 yards. I feel like that swing really helps with my release as I had a similar feeling when I was working on the push/pull release. This ah ha moment has me thinking of the correlation between the two videos.
