Hi Shawn, when I reach the top of my backswing I have what seems like so much hand/arm depth with my right elbow way behind me compared to you and Sav.
Hi Shawn,
for me when I grip it (now, after adopting the Shawn swing) my club is pretty much square to look at, at setup, but my grip is very strong.
If I want to see how closed the club is I have to put down the club and turn my hands over to make them look neutral.
When I fade the driver even though I am trying to hit it straight or with a slight draw, The usual culprit it the face was open at impact.
So now I do the acid test, where once I am ready I take the club up and bring it back to impact position and see what the club face is doing, usually I need to turn it very little to feel it square at impact.
My current problem is using too much effort. Hitting it well but for some reason I want to hit my 9i 145-150 ( when earlier I would hit it 135), but its always with effort. And effort makes me a less smooth.
As I watch this it appears hips and shoulders are only rotating 75° degrees on back swing and then full 90° on follow thru, is that correct? Also we should be aiming for wrist cock (on snuff boxes) and minimize wrist hinge (bowing of left wrist) correct?
With my driver, my draws usually don’t come back but my irons do, I have a very strong grip and play the ball where you talk about in the stance. I’ve always been more out to in swing so what do you recommend trying, stance? Grip? Ball placement?
I’ve been working your system for almost a year now. Yesterday felt the heave in my takeaway. It just came to me as I continue to breakaway from swing positions.
Awesome Krista! You will see a new guy on the PGA Tour scene who is a Neurologist and his stuff screams wisdom in golf and the way we bring things to the table! Stick with it!

You’ve had some great podcasts with guests who have addressed mental performance. Really good for everyone and as a competitive golfer I really appreciate hearing about these elements. For me practicing mindfulness while golfing is my super power. Being able to have “control” over our thoughts and emotions is where it is at and golf never lets me down for providing opportunities to practice 😁
Yesterday I really felt my target side of my body in my swing (not a manipulation, just a ‘whole body working as one’, on task sensation. It was all going really well. I felt free to throw the club consistently.
I could also feel all my energy leaks. I was feeling my early extension for the first time, even though I was still making a complete throw and getting the ball to my targets.
I’ve been trying to be more patient with myself to grow my swing with your system, but I am still quite curious why my throws are still what could be called early release. With my new growth in understanding my swing, what might be my next focus? keep throwing or something more specific? With gratitude.
My left handed swing feels like a nice throw of the frisbee Happy Gilmore style; because I am right hand dominant. And you remember the walking drill with sending of divots? Still an amazing way to engage POWERFULLY with NOT A HINT OF EARLY EXTENSION! The series is “kinetic chain facilitation and engagement” Practice this till the cows come back to the farm! 😀👍
“Flight plan”
Hi Shawn,
On helping a fellow team mate I talked to him about the Flight plan, I mentioned picturing the – direction, trajectory, curve. And I have never seen an immediate improvement in someone the way this 9 Handicapper had.
Then I realized even I am so bogged down with the tilt, IP, throwing the club towards target etc. I never take a flight plan. Yes, I do take the general direction (never specific) or where on the tee box do I need to place the ball or behind which divot but never more than that.
Started with 2 bogeys and a Par. After telling my team mate I too started figuring the system for myself. Decided to practice what I had preached.
Did not do it for all shots, but every shot that was crucial like 3 wood under a tree, a 5 wood over trees, 8 iron over a huge tree to a tiny green with a fade 165 yards…
I shot my best round on the newly opened greens (we had been playing temporary greens over the monsoon season). 4 over par! From the Blues!
Terrible greens slow as a snail with a crutch.
Its amazing how people are so oblivious to the way you teach the game.
We have a league coming up 21 teams, based on handicaps am playing off on my genuine handicap of 12. That’s before the Shawn System. Thank you for the pure joy you made me feel yesterday. A lot’s coming together as I write.
While I Write might as well ask you :- Should I do this (flight plan) with every single shot hence forth, driver to irons to hybrids to wedges to the putter?
Do you do this on every shot or only when a little more concentration is required?
Direction, trajectory and curvature = Flight plan or have I missed something?
I will not approach the ball UNTIL I have decided on my flight plan. Then I pick the IP to guide my set up into it; then when I approach the ball, I am already feeling the action through it and into the flight plan (feel and sight and sound of task) and then I plug my prediction process into it and confirm my set up feels comfortable so that momentum can be ALLOWED TO PERFORM MY TASK FOR ME. Then I am a witness, I am with, being with, my task into the release into the picture. EVERY SINGLE SHOT WITHOUT FAIL.
I’ve been more of an out to in swing, and my draws ar small or don’t come back. I got a little confused on which would work best for my type of swing in this video
Hey Justin! Ok, let’s first answer your question: yes, the ball a bit farther back will help pulls; but the best remedy is the Goldilocks effect. Start with solid hooks that curve a lot to the left; really get into the release videos including the “important grip update” and “important release update”. Pull draws or even hooks are desired here to start.
Then, when the brain confirms that hey, when the club face is this closed and the release snaps like that, the ball WILL curve left, so I can now play the ball back in the stance and release plenty to the right and I know the ball will come back. It is with this predictability that you will be able to swing in to out with (precisely, like in the “match backswing to ball direction” video) and make sure you see the “alignment reload” video as well!
What’s the general rule of thumb for how far your hands should extend out from your body with the driver? Sometimes I feel like I’m really reaching for it.
Reaching without taking your posture out of balance is what you want; when you allow momentum to whip the tip of tee towards the direction you want to start the ball, does it feel like you need to LUNGE AT THE BALL or HOLD ON? Or can you just let the swing go freely and predict that the tip of tee will get clipped? See “hammer throw driver” and “the “goldie locks series”
Hi Shawn
Need help with my setup, am a wee bit confused even though I am playing very good golf:-
During setup I sometimes stand like savy ( 12’40”) where I feel more than 55% of my weight on the inside arch of my Trail foot, I then tilt , head goes back and I do a bump with my lead hip towards target to get braced and I swing, with this I do have a tendency to go left or sometimes catch it a bit heavy.
OR
During Setup I stand over my lead leg hip over knee over ankle, with almost 70% weight on lead arch and use my trail foot inside arch like a brace, then I Tilt , in this setup I do not bump towards target as I already feel braced. In my swing my weight goes to the inside arch of the trail a lot more during take away. In this shot I hit it cleaner. You saw my video and felt I was staying too much on top of left leg and getting ahead of the ball in downswing. Although the second setup gives me better contact. Distance is same, could be that I had got used to the 75% being in front, much like the down slope swing setup.
in minute 8.50 you say “heave the arms’ if you want to go further. To heave has to be done with the legs . Right? The basic of my swing motor is throwing. Is that correct?
Yes, exactly! The golf swing is 2 connected kinetic chains, one for the backswing and one for the through swing; see “kinetic chain series” and “kinetic chain facilitation and engagement series” and “perpetual motion drill series”
Shawn, whether it is shaving grass clippings or cutting a dandelion stem or sending wood shavings to target, is it only for beginners and intermediate level player for understanding the concept of target and through the ball? Or is its something you or Sav or an advanced player keep in mind for every shot that you play? In other words is that how one has to think from hence forth on every single shot on the course?
What you will realize is all these tasks provide the senses with the PREDICTED EXPERIENCE before it happens; every time I step into a shot, I already feel the kind of turf and ground interaction I will have to deliver the shot with because of all these experiences with these tasks. Some shots are squeeze through doorframe under the wind; some are whip the grass clippings into the wind; some are saw through stem of dandelion in that direction; you develop a nice portfolio to allow you to make the clearest of predictions so THAT THE ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO ALLOW MOMENTUM TO PERFORM THE TASK, which will engage the kinetic chain and deliver your shots for you.
