Eli has had issues with an overactive lower body; the “bolted and centred” video as well as the uphill shots and ball below feet shots is what we practiced a lot of and this allowed him to support the swing with a stronger structure.
I did try it and to be honest it felt as though I wont be weight shifting but as I hit a few more realized the weight shift is there it just doesn’t show and one feels a lot more centered and controlled. Food for thought, for me.
Earlier I hit my half shots and quarter shots more with feel, but as my contact has become really good since doing what you ask of us, I use the face of the clock 7,8,8.30,9,10 in my take away and keeping tempo and the ds same, it worked for me. But finish was always with trail heal up and on the toe. Keeping the heal on the ground definitely gave me a lot more control. A few days of comparing will decide if its a keeper…:) This is so much fun!!!
When playing an actual round of Golf, do you think of the task on every shot, or is it mainly for when one is practicing. I do keep the IP now for every single shot, and I do try and get the feel of what I am trying to do whether hitting right of the IP and am I in position to do that but at this point does one think of the dandelion stem, grass over the right of IP etc?
Hi, Shawn,
Heaving has been a revelation to me.
Am so excited regarding working on my turn. Yesterday went all out trying to feel the levitation/ heaving.
I realized that when I turn, my arms work on a flat rotation, my hip turn more towards the lower back (that’s the best way to explain it). The Arms wrap around the body as I have this subconscious target that a BS must reach its full potential. (The first 2 photos attached).
Tried to go up and heave my club , I do feel I have gotten up but was worth a try, I ended up rotating more without effort. My hip feels it rotates a little upwards. Only hitting pitching wedges they were carrying 130 yards easily. But as the ground is heavy the divots were deep.
Am I on the right track. Today was the second day, hit 8i , tried to hit draws but ended up push fades. While driving back realized I was so engrossed in the heaving, I forgot the task of throwing the club, tomorrow is another day. The divots are still deep. Early days.
The third picture (was of yesterday pw) looks the same as the two but there is a gap between the lead arm and the chest and the arms is higher in the full backswing. But every shot was high and mighty.
Shawn, This is an excellent video for us control freaks. I think this is where the cutting the stem causes me issues. So focused on “making” sure I clip that stem that everything tightens up. I am wondering if setting up with the correct swing path and then instead of a very narrow focus of swing out to a small point in the distance, would I be better with a wider area to swing out to? Say right third of green versus a leaf on a tree? I have read that wider arcs for putting and also wider arcs for ball flight help take the precision out and free up the swing. Am I on the right track?
That was an incredible video! Keeping the grip in place thru impact is a constant issue for me. All my poor shots have that in common. I then look at “staying in the shot” but if the grip is faulty to begin with, it’s not going to stay intact through impact?
Correct! When a student shifts his or her hands at address before they start the swing it is because they are not clear about what they are about to do with the ball. When you are clear about the task, and you KNOW that if you stay with the task that the ball will do what you want it to do, then you will stop shifting.
The way through this is to match the set up to the task and confirm through the “goldie locks series” that the set up matches the picture, and then you must stay with it and let it go and SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DO. MAKE AT LEAST 5 DELIVERIES THROUGH AND OUT INTO THE PICTURE AND SEE A PATTERN OF FLIGHT FIRST.
Then you can make modifications to the set up and then continue delivering the task without interfering. It is the only way forward!
Shawn, love the stick in the ground as a visual aid. Do you think using an additional stick in the ground parallel to the target stick could be of benefit? I feel like my side vision makes it difficult with the intermediate point and I tend to “face” the intermediate point. Essentially aiming too far to the right. (As a right hander)
Great Video Shawn, I’m having success with irons when I brace and tilt to go towards the target. However, fairway wood and driver I’m getting off plane. Please demonstrate this with the woods. Thanks
Hey Bruce! Start with the “throwing series” where I throw clubs and objects of different lengths to show the difference in set up from short to long and very long clubs. See the “hammer throw driver” especially. Then see “important driver nugget” to make sure your stance is supporting the driver and see how things go!
Hi Shawn,
For in between shots for example, my pw goes 125y, my 9i 145y.
I had a shot of 135y. I used my 9i. For many years I could manipulate my backswing, and somehow get these in between shots. Recently the game is going so good (broke 80 twice), but I just didn’t know what to do. Tried shortening my backswing , and full follow through I pulled it, I tried to hit it easy I pushed it. When I hit it with the full swing I flew the the flag and landed 10 yards too long. Any video I can see where we can use the same club to hit different distances?
Same task; just softer! Send grass with softer momentum; throw the club less far; stop thinking about how long your backswing is because that is a distraction that takes you away from the target.
Tes, absolutely, spot on shortening the back swing felt like manipulation. And realised thinking of how much to take away completely takes your mind of the ip, throwing the club, and target! Homework for the weekend, try softer shots with diff clubs with full swing. Thank you.
Been trying softer shots Shawn, but just unable to finish the shot when its an in between club, subconsciously body does not want to hit it too far, I end up blocking to the right always. Am stuck on a couple of things and this is one of them.
Simply let the momentum go and see what happens for you; if you go long, you go long and just adjust 1 more club; the key is to let momentum do it’s thing without any interference.
Excellent review for us that have been with you for awhile and great introduction for anyone new. So easy to get a little sloppy with the grip, thanks.
Everyone’s wrists have different ranges of motion and tone; does your hinge deepen in the downswing as your kinetic chain delivers to the target? If yes, let things evolve as your arms and club get wider in the backswing.
Wow, last 2 minutes was so much to understand. I couldn’t figure out pre turn vs not pre turning. I have been pre turning for all my shots ( not for chipping of course).
My understanding, I setup to the ball with ( what I call a slight pre turn) where I am behind the ball by bracing I get into the tilt.. (pw thru to driver). For Draw I was kind of doing the same, to hit it right would make me brace more and as the ball position is center or back of center you tilt even more. ( which I guess you call it pre turn). Any video I can watch that clarifies the difference in more detail.
This has evolved into 1-choose a FLIGHT PLAN; 2-find an IP to set up into the flight plan; 3-match the set up to the flight plan
When the set up matches, you are “pre-turned” which is the term I had to use to get golfers out of the “square and static set up”
Great video Shawn! A wonderful reminder about the importance of the grip. I’ve been trying to get the different shot shapes (I’ve watched several of the videos) to work by playing with how open or closed the face is (grip face relationship) but am not having much luck.
pretty much everything wants to move right (fade), even when I’m setup for a draw. Seems like I can only get the ball to move left when I have the face extremely closed. Then its just a huge hook.
I open the face up gradually but then I’m back to no movement or left to right. I probably just need to send in a video for analysis. Thanks for all you do and for sharing your wisdom!
When you hook, pay attention to where the peak speed of the swing is; if at the bottom, THAT DOES NOT COUNT!! Keep the very closed face and deliver your action well past the ball into the direction of flight! See “throwing the club” and “predict contact” and “target confirmation series” and “stick your finish despite the ball! Then see “draw fine tuning”
Hi Bill!
go straight to the “beginner series” and then see the “list of videos by date” and scroll to the bottom and see Wisdom 1.0 series; an oldie but goodie! Then let me know where you are having issues and I will point you in the right direction!
