You can, but you need to open the face slightly to keep the leading edge off the ground. Or you can take a knuckle off, you have a lot of options. Did you see the short game section of the “how to go from Weak to Strong grip” series?
Same vertical as Bubba, Justin Thomas, Chris Gotterup, And half the tour! So yes, you want to strive for this and the best explanation is from your very own anatomy in the “dual pendulum swing series” 1 to 4
I have been watching your videos for a long time and recently started to try some things which surprised me at how good it felt, I have decided to join your program today and I really am enjoying your content, I find that I will occasionally snap hook a shot, I think I know why but can you help ?
Hey Christopher!
what was the intent: hit the ball hard or let momentum release you into the direction of the flight through the ball and intermediate point?
When I let my arms fall, I seem for whatever reason, to go into early extension or my arms fall the wrong way, often out to the right, probably because of following other pros in the past, and the resulting shots are from problematic to disastrous. I do better when I let my trail elbow fall straight down. It helps me get my body out of the way while delaying the hit and improving direction. Is this variation or compensation okay or should I work harder getting both arms to fall from the top?
Because I’m getting more width and through the ball a bit better, my distance control is wild…. thankfully you showed in the beginning part the 60 max without hinge, thank you!
HI Shawn. You pointed me here to this video when i got my first online lesson with you a few years back. I have just revisited the recording you sent me back then and you mention an addendum “lead hand release in the back swing”
This with the other videos (including the Grip Compression Chamber with the clementine and the Best Video on Grip Ever) have seemed to really help improve my swing and add about 10 yards to each of my clubs. I can feel so much more strength in my grip. I use the interlocking pinky grip. After my first range session and round of golf I developed a rather large blister on the top right side pad of my right ring finger. I’m curious does it look like I’m gripping the club correctly in the photos or is this just a new adjustment which my hands are getting used to and it shouldn’t happen in the future? Thoughts? Thanks Shawn!
shawn , I try to never use the ball as target but I do use it as reference to whether my center is noticeably shifting while swinging back and then thru.
be blessed mark
COG is different location when feet together vs feet apart. The big mistake I see is when someone sets up feet together and gets distance to ball and then spreads their feet without moving away from the ball. Feet together=closer to ball
Shaw, been an on and subscriber for years. i drove up to Toronto for an in person lesson about 8 years ago. I have been a decent ball striker at times but not now. I have a lot going on in my life at this time as well as rear shoulder problems.my last several 9 hole matches have been mid an upper 40’s i just hit 34 balls in the back YARD . Many thin hits, bottom edge of the club in the middle of the ball, and lots of shanks.
any suggestions?
Haha, well there is your culprit! Let’s start with the routine written down:
get comfortable with this and start executing with it; then we talk again!
Here is the Pre-shot routine’s non negotiable items
1-Best option for shot
2 rules: 1-Release into safe direction; never release towards trouble and draw or fade away from trouble; this puts unnecessary tension in the system with the “you better make sure you do this or that to not go there”
2-No strain required to execute your shot; understand that you have 2 general yardages per club; one for the flush shot and one for the good miss about 12 yards short of the flush shot. The good miss happens 82% of the time and the flush shot 18% of the time. This helps determine what club to use based on where the best place to miss will be.
2-Once the shot option is chosen, confirm the flight plan-what line do you want to start the ball and what line do you want to end? (include roll out)
3-Choose intermediate point; can be straight on or slightly off line, as long as it’s easy to see and well into your peripheral vision (6 to 12 inches in front of ball only)
4-Confirm alignment of momentum-get ready to see the blur of the path of the club and match it to the ball and intermediate point and prepare to make the ball a PRECISE INTERSECTION on the way through the IP into the flight plan! See the low point of this arc blur, which is about an inch in front of the ball with all clubs except the driver.
5-Confirm ball position matches the flight plan and the direction you want to start the ball.
6-Confirm distance to ball and see that when you let momentum ride through the blur through ball and IP that you don’t feel the need to reach out from being too far or hold on from being too close and you can let it ride
7-Confirm Grip club relation; see that you know it will curve the way you want to in the air once you allow the momentum to release you through the arc-blur into the flight plan through ball and IP
8-Confirm levels and low point with relaxed and engaged legs; legs are ready to heave the arms and club into the backswing that would match the direction of the flight plan; and feels like you are ready to allow that solid dose of momentum to ride through the arc-blur through the ball, the low point of the swing and IP into that flight plan
9-Ready?
When over the ball, See the arc-blur already moving through ball and intermediate point through this low point. You are feeling the arms and club already tracking the arc through the ball and intermediate point into a nice release snap and the body already gliding out of the way of these tracking arms. What does that feel like again? Oh yeah, about like this! This is the glue that holds EVERYTHING together is the letting the swing stay with the direction of flight and fully witness momentum taking care of that for you.
This is great Shawn. I had messed around with an open stance, but really found myself struggling to get my hips and shoulders square with my foot line slightly open. I thought I had corrected it but noticed my last 2-3 weeks or so I could not hit a draw to save my life, and would occasionally hook the driver.
Put some alignment rods down today (hello fundamentals) and my feet hips and ankles were an easy 15 degrees left of target. I was dumping the trail shoulder to try to manipulate the inside path. With irons it resulted in a block, w driver with the ball further forward I’d hook it.
Dropped my trail foot back the same amount that my lead foot was open and tidy draws re-appeared. I’ll be exploring this for sure. It sort of preset my backswing turn as well, and it felt like a much shorter path to a complete backswing.
I felt a freedom of backswing I hadn’t felt in a while! It also allowed for that release into the backswing we discussed on the pod, letting the levitation happen instead of having to sort of place it because my ACU ran out of room with the open stance and would crash into my pec
It also made your trigger move click more easily for me as well, with the additional space I’m able to really use the ground to heave that club into the hinge, which levitates it up. I can then really tune into that weight as it starts to fall. And something about starting from the ground up going back makes it so intuitive to start with the group up on the way through as well.
Off to a good start this year, cap has gone up slightly with some really good fall rounds coming off (standard for us northerners lol) but I looked apples to apples my 1st 15 rounds LY vs TY and I am 2.5 shots better so far!
Wild bill Melbourne (one of the original grass cutters in both directions)said in the rough your depth of cut is the bottom of the ball would you agree it seems to be working for me
