Hello, i believe i may be in a similiar boat regarding lie angles. I have been hitting the ball well but very weak with long clubs off the deck. Today i thought id try to hit 3 iron like a wedge, push my arms up/forward not sure why just felt right and wow started crushing it. I believe it was the sole of the club hasbeen too upright and i have been making unconscious adjustments with shorter irons as its only minimal and also potentially have been standing too close to ball. Time to go find a good fitter! Hopefully these j36’s will bend a little
Another great fundamental. Looking forward to trying this. It took me a little while to incorporate your instructions but I must say I have never hit the ball so solid as now and my consistency is improving which is important to me (and why I dropped other swing methods).
Re-visiting this concept and video today; as usual I seem to get more out of your videos with multiple viewings. I have never had a problem drawing the ball, but I was missing it left with my old swing and previous unforgiving driver. I did some experimenting Sunday and found that with a slightly open stance the CHS was lower than with a square stance. Then I remembered that I was using a closed stance 3 years ago when I was just beginning and I was hitting a Titleist 915 3wood 260 carry and the driver 280 carry, close to 300 total. Those are probably max numbers for me and something I’ve been trying desperately to get back to. So perhaps a closed stance is more mechanically correct with those clubs producing faster speed? I wonder if anyone else has experimented with this?
Follow-up: After applying this “Golden Nugget” to my driver… I am thrilled with the improved results. In addition to utilizing this to the driver, I’ve also applied it to my longer clubs (my hybrids) with great results as well. I had previously fought an unwanted and inconsistent fade/slice on my 200 +/- shots. With this method they are pretty much flying toward my target. Yesterday I reached two Par 5s on my second shots and Birdied both of them.

Yes! For the reasons right here in this video! The length of the driver has a swing that now pulls more away from you and you need to pre-deploy the arm-club unit away from yourself at address. Hogan had the wedge handle almost between the knees but looked like Moe Norman with the 3 wood!
So with this outward pull, you need support! In comes the diagonal stance or closed stance as you put it.
Set up dynamically, meaning you are getting ready to deliver an action with the driver through the tip of tee in the direction of the intermediate point and you feel that the feet are able to support you WELL PAST THE BALL.
I’m a new subscriber and very excited about the great new potential your instruction is giving me. This driver nugget is particularly revolutionary to my confidence with the driver! I’m still developing a “target” mindset and not body positions. When I get it right I have picked up a 2club increase in distance across the board! When I get ball focused I either suffer a complete miss hit low left and fat or a big pull hook. Anyway, thanks so much for helping get much more enjoyment while I improve.

I can’t wait. I have been struggling with this for years. When I feel the pressure under my front foot during the downswing my ball contact feels amazing. Swinging from the top not so much.
Why I can’t transition from the step drill or one foot drill to a normal swing is beyond me. Range is also considerably different than course as well. Mental I know.

Keep the strain level super low when throwing the club in the direction you want to start that ball and keep the velocity.

Where do you want the ball to go and what is the task and the feel of the task to get it there;
Practice this on the range! Every shot to a destination with a specific flight plan!!
Here is the focus sequence you need to go through as your pre-flight check list!
1-pick an “end target” or a place you want to have the ball end up
2-pick a flight plan that fits your ability to get the ball there; please INCLUDE THE HEIGHT OF THE SHOT or peak trajectory before it falls back down towards the end target. Be clear about the option-if not, goldie-locks the options.
3-find an intermediate point that will set you up into that picture from behind-MASSIVELY IMPORTANT TO TRUST ONCE YOU PICK FOR YOU TO LINE UP AND TO DELIVER THE ACTION.
4-PREDICT CONTACT AND DIRECTION BEFORE YOU LET THE SWING GO.
so that when you let your action release itself to the target, you can predict that the ball position, the distance to the ball, the posture, and the grip-club face relationship will fit the flight when you let the swing track itself into the direction you want to start the ball.

5-EXECUTION
set up done? Prediction of shot done? It is now OUT of YOUR CONTROL, just give control to gravity and let the weight of the ARMS AND CLUB OR WEIGHT OF SWING release itself in the direction you want to START the ball (ON THE SIDE OF THE INTERMEDIATE POINT YOU CHOSE). Look for the feel of that low effort and nice whipping velocity that unleashes that ball into that flight with freedom and trust. Abandon control to the task.
6- DID YOU LET IT?
DID you stay with the feel of that release to that direction? Or did you get distracted by “making sure” of a position or something else making noise or commotion around you? How do you know for a fact that you stayed with it?
If you stayed with it:How was the strain level mentally and physically?
Was it hard or easy?
If you did not stay with it, something short circuited you and you were trying to do something else; what was that you were trying? What were your concerns?
7-The most important stat in golf THAT TRUMPS ALL STATS is how many times (there are average 36 full swings on the golf course) were you able to stay with your shot all the way to the finish? Can You CONFIRM WITHOUT A DOUBT THAT YOU felt the release of the club in the direction you wanted to start the ball?
IF YOU CANNOT CONFIRM THAT YOU STAYED WITH THE SHOT, YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME TRYING TO FIX YOUR SWING THAT IS NOT BROKEN;
Hey Shawn, first of all thank you for all the great content! I wanted to ask a quick question regarding the braced tilt in related to the closed or “diagonal” stance. I have been experimenting with this stance lately because I feel much more braced and capable of released to the intermediate point with my back foot slightly back. However, if I try to apply the turn and tilt philosophy I struggle with ball contact. Any recommendations? Thanks!

EVERYTHING YOU DO AT THE SET UP MUST MATCH YOUR TASK.
So at the end of the set up, you are ready to deliver your throw in the direction you want to start the ball and the predictions are that
1-ball contact will be solid because you have a great posture, ready to move into a throw
2-ball will start on the line you want it to because the ball position is proper to the shot
3-ball will curve in the air the way you want because the geip-club-face angle is proper for the shot
4-you will stay in balance easily because your distance to ball is allowing for full freedom of arm swing in front of you-under and through

As for the pre-turn and tilt-GOLDIE LOCKS IT.
-This would be too much tilt-will scrape the ground behind the ball and go too far right
-This would be too little where I feel like the club will bury into the ground.

I’ve been making good contact recently for driver and irons but I am leaking shots both left and right. As a result I’m less confident with committing to a shot shape and overall accuracy. I blame it on not having a consistent set up with ball position and grip. I tend to fidget with both of these. Do you have any drills/ visual aids for repeatable ball position and grip?
Oohhh yes! You must have the ability to predict the shot’s outcome BASED ON YOU DELIVERING YOUR ACTION-TASK TO TARGET.

When you stay on task to target, this will keep your center steady; but if you are unaware that your center is moving (sternal notch) around, then you get disconnected from the delivery to target and then default to the ball.

It works like advertised and I am happy with and use it on most shots. The web has me confused “they” keep saying the angle of the club face is 85% responsible for initial direction. My best guess is you are swinging out to the right so it is a little less closed. The hands are forward at impact so again a little less closed. Is that all it takes to take the 45 degrees club face out and start the ball at the target on the exaggerated draw shot?
Dear Shawn, I get a little confused while swinging. Should I focus on the task (cutting grass or going through the door frame) or being a witness to the club releasing me? When I focus on either, the other thing slips away. Is there a trick to solving this problem? Thanks
Hi Asad! Yes!
You make the cutting of the grass A PREDICTION based on you THROWING THE CLUB in the direction you want to start the ball;
So, the question you ask is: when you throw the club into a nice release in this direction, do you feel low enough that the club will cut the grass on the way?
If the answer is yes, then you stay with the throw and release with ease and velocity; a nice full throw.
Then see what happens AFTER THE THROW and do not make sure or be careful.
Dear Shawn, someone advised that on my back swing, my lead knee should not rotate in beyond the ball. It should basically stay straight or at max turn upto the ball. This helps me some with contact, but wanted to check with you of that is something I should be thinking about.

Shawn – are you opening and closing the face of the woods/driver for draws and fades? I tend to overcook the fade to a slice when I open the face of the driver.
New member. I’m coming from Dante’s swing system. I’m struggling with the backswing. Is it okay to be across the line at the top? It feels super long and almost to a reverse pivot. I’m really having to work on swinging to my target vs the ball.

Yes, pretty much because we don’t want to have to lunge after it; simply aim more left and open the face a bit more; for a HIGHER FADE it can move up another half ball to a ball max.

So I played today and as I replayed my round in my head this evening most of my misses were over draws, even with my approach lower irons. I sensed this during the round and tried to switch to fades, but , some of those turned in to double cross pulls. I pluck an intermediate target and Terri to have a picture of the shot in my mind, but I think I may be starting my downswing from the top. When I have sent video in you have identified the transition as my difficulty
