Thanks Shawn
You must have read my mind. All too often I feel ” The water spilling out my left ear” at the top of backswing. I played yesterday and my task was feel the weight of the kettle bell while keeping the water in my ear with a rehinge delivery.
Shot 38 on the back. Can’t wait to work on the mile markers with the 2 tees.
Have a great weekend
Fred
Played on a public course and was joined by a nice older asian man who did not speak english fluently. He had a crazy swing but managed to get the ball going pretty good, though he took a few mulligans. He calls me over and says, “Just yoking – swing is like wife, second one always more beautiful”. LOL.
Hi Shawn! Another great video! I have been revisiting a few of your oldies but goodies, and another step in the right direction and key for me keeping my irons along the ground through the tees was that placement of my trail elbow in the setup like you discovered with the football analogy. It is such an improvement in the way I can gather the sword, feel the heft of my strike, and stay anchored behind the hit, which was always an issue for me.
I cannot get across the line and steeply chunk on the downswing with this element, and once it is set, I really can stay with my target beautifully into the finish. The 20-20 head position was also something that I had gotten away from in my setup and once I re-calibrated the head tilt and turn in my setup, my trail heel is finally staying on the ground past impact and my dispersion has really tightened up.
I shot my best 9 hole round of 41 on Thursday and started the back 9 on pace to break 80 for the first time in my life, but it was an afternoon round on a beautiful day and the course was full. Once we caught up to the foursomes in front of us, we unfortunately ran out of daylight so I cannot officially make that claim yet! My success story continues and it truly is just a reinforcing feeling that we have it right and that your instruction is the best out there hands down! Thank you again, I will send a swing video to you soon, just having too much fun playing right now and for the first time in my life, do not feel the need to “WORK” on my swing! Have a fantastic weekend!
I am not feeling the leverage you describe. I think the grip is solid, but seem to lose the hinge before impact, and have little to no release past the ball ( and no divot). What do you recommend ? Thank you.
The good news is that you are not defective! 😝
What is your task? See “top 3 tasks” video on premium
This will allow you to start feeling what THROUGH THE BALL means.

Correct! When you do the door frame drill in slow motion and look at the sole of the club when the face is against the ball, you will see that the leading edge still has not cut the stem yet; so cutting the stem means ball first contact! Hence the wisdom…😎
I took it to the Range today and did very well using Compressing the Ball against the Door Frame. Got 10 extra yards and pretty Straight. If I keep this up by the end of the Summer I’ll be on Tour (ha,ha) Thanks much. Bill.
Hi Shawn,
Good video for me. I can have an inconsistent strike. Bracing videos have helped me take a little divot after strike, but it feels like I am swinging downward. How do you take a divot if you are parallel to the ground enough to hit both tees? My miss is to take club inside, drop trail shoulder on downswing, then hit fat with swing to right field hoping to hit a draw. I think this video can help because it is a great illustration of what we are trying to do. Keep clipping that dandelion.
You are the best.
Thanks
Stay on task for sure! Too much from the inside is definitely not a good idea either!
The key is which one fits the shot and the task! See “mile markers for direction” which is the 4th video in the “consistency series”
Man am I glad to see this video. I am struggling with my irons shanking them left. I believe in large part as I am not swinging to the target. This routine should help with that as the second T becomes a point of emphasis. My friends keep telling that you are not to tilt on the irons. They also tell me to keep my centered over the ball. My response is my coach says otherwise yet I see them “hitting the ball” much better than I am. Shawn, I need to send you a clip of my head position. I remember you telling me that my head position allowed me to see with my binocular vision but closed my shoulders to the target.
Well, all you need to do is use the head position that matches going to a target! See Rory’s head at impact vs address as well as Tommy Fleetwood, Xander, Justin Thomas and pretty much the whole tour so your friends have some homework to do!
I appreciate your teaching style! I have learned a lot in a short amount of time. I have 1 very large problem though. No matter the task, I can’t stop defaulting to the ball. Help!!!
Go to “throwing the club” then “predict contact” then “goldie locks series” videos on premium;
This will help tune out the short circuits preventing you from staying with the shot; then finally, see “target focus confirmation” series
Shawn – I struggle keeping my weight inside my right foot during the backswing. Feet together drill helps with the feel, but I inevitably roll the back ankle when my feet are apart. I’m a tall golfer, and some folks tell me my stance is too narrow. The wider I stand, the less hip rotation I feel.
See my “sledge hammer stop swaying shawn clement” video on youtube; then see “best downswing weightshift shawn clement” which unblocks the mental barrier of the UNDERSTANDING on how the weight shifts from the right to the left in the downswing; Shawn
Thank you! This drill forces me to use my lower body to move the upper body (something I’ve heard before, but never fully understood). My back foot was firmly planted in the ground, and doesn’t sway at all.
I tried the drill with my sand wedge and 7 iron. I started off missing the front T to the right. After, making an adjustment to my takeaway I would swing of over the 2nd T. I then used the perpetual motion drill cutting grass. I had to lower myself and boom I took out both T’s. I was able to transfer the skill at the driving range using “Throwing the clubs” as my task.
I think the lightbulb went on here! As someone who tends to overswing (past parallel even with short irons!) and high strain, the best I am usually able to feel my kinetic chain is an abrupt firing of my obliques but NOT from the ground up and legs below them. Less floating and more staying bolted and centered, correct?
Hi Shawn, I have tried the draw/fade tips and can now work the ball a lot better. I just have a question on course management. Would you try and draw/fade every full shot on the course or do you sometimes try and hit straight shots.
Yes, you want to have a flight plan with every shot;
Where to start, where to end; even if it is just a yard; you have a plan.
Always a flavour to give the brain to chew on so it knows what to look for.
The face is slightly less closed than the draw; just a couple of degrees only!
Dustin Johnson and many others have a very closed face when they fade! It is what allows them to get the fade with COMPRESSION.
On iron shots I close the face then grip the club. For chips and pitches, how do I grip the club since the face is slightly open at 10 degrees? Thanks!! I love your videos. I’ve realized I need to focus on my short game for improved scoring.
Thanks. I practiced last night. My shots were going really high. I think maybe instead of opening my club face (not closing) I increased the loft tremendously. I think my 60 degree became a 90. Also, does this chipping and pitching technique apply to P, 52 and 56 wedges. Also, is there a video about hitting out of different stages of rough?
