Great visual from behind the ball to see your red to blue or blue to red instruction. Need something similar to better see your right or left of intermediate point instruction. I am a right hand golfer. When I try to move ball back in stance, I push right or fade which seems the opposite result. Also get opposite result when I move the ball forward. That gives me a hook or a pull. So that seems to lead to alignment over intermediate point or the amount of pre closing of my club face. Thanks
Shawn
Watched all the videos you suggested. Immediate improvement when I began to stay centered. I think I finally understand the hammer drill stance is not just to address the ball. It is also what you should look like when you make contact with the ball during you swing!!
I have always had problems with swinging out into the picture. Still working on that side of the shot.
Thanks so much!!
This is a classic case of NOT STAYING with the shot. When the ball is back, you get ahead of it and block fade; when the ball is forward, you are behind it but release AT THE BALL and double cross.
We first need a feel for staying behind the ball-see “hammer drill” video on premium, then see “lead hand release” and “trail hand release” as well as the first video and the 4th video in the “consistency series” on premium.
Let me know how it goes!
I’m struggling with staying on task because my brain knows that the ‘true task’ is to hit the ball with the club, I can’t trick my brain and I default to the ball . The task that works best for me is throw the club but I continually default to ball, I have no consistency at all- 180 degrees spray pattern. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated, I do agree with your teachings but I can’t do it… yet
Awesome Jeff! That definitely explains everything and great on you for the realization of it and how our perception is too often off base. Good lesson to be learned here for many and I thank you on their behalf and mine of course for the great comment and observation!
Shawn
I’ll give a update on my struggles maybe it will help someone. I couldn’t stay on task I couldn’t release to the target, everything from push fades to big sweeping death hooks. After watching the dynamic posture video I realized my posture was too upright ( I thought it was ok) After fixing my posture I’m able to stay on task and effortlessly release to the target.
Shawn Thank you for your work , Jeff
Shawn,
I am two plus weeks into your video teaching, which has really refocused me.
I dont fully understand the Door Frame concepts. I get body position to hammer a nail.
Is the idea that the torso stays centered in the frame, not swaying either right or left, only turning and getting out of the way?
Hi Shawn. I’m lefty and I can’t fade the ball if my life depended on it. My shots are always pushed left even though my focus stays on my desired shot shape and intermediate point. Either they are straight left (so to the intended final target) or they start left And start turning on top of that. The blur of the club goes over my intermediate point from my perspective. No issues with draws. 1) could the diagonal stance be contributing to that and 2) could it be that I’m overdoing “stay behind the ball”? Closing the face just lowers the ball flight or pulls the shot right.
Shawn my wife is struggling with a sway, I searched using your search function but there’s no results; what video would you recommend that covers this fix?
Hi Shawn….Would it be accurate to say”…..”pick your stance that meets the fundamentals of balance in relation to your target, IP and it conforms with how you picture the shot.”
Thanks!
Thanks Shawn, I having a hard time drawing my irons so I’ll try the excessive closing to 45%. My biggest issue now is that the ball starts immediately to the left instead of gradually or it just fades slightly right.
I’ll go back to a few videos to make sure my backswing and follow through are working as they should.
Shawn, thanks for the great videos. I was trying the throwing the club drill for the first time and found myself stepping through the throw with my right leg (I am right handed) . I think it was Gary Player who did this as a pro. Is this something you would recommend?
Hi Rick! No, I don’t
See my downhill shot video on premium; practice throwing down the slope like that and feel how the slope causes you to brace beautifully and get that catapult effect you get with the feet together drill.
If you feel the need to walk, your swing’s center is moving forward because your center of gravity is moving forward and that would cause the ball position to move back and then you find yourself in a position where you have to cast the arms early and reach back to not miss the ball;
See also “hammer drill” and “lead hand release” and “trail hand release” and “release dine tuning” videos on premium. Great question!!
I taught this 30 plus years ago and this would be one of the things I would love to take back…Gary Player was one of the books I read At the time…
Did you see the videos for those?? Very important that you see them as this is one of the things that is the MOST POORLY TAUGHT IN GOLF. Ball positions will be in relation to the shot you want to hit, draw or fade. Please see those videos!
Shawn, the idea of the club face seeming so closed, but when you “hammer through” the face is square to the ball has really worked for me for my irons. The last few rounds I’m flying through the green because of extra yardage, which is nice problem to have. But I have that same thought for my driver and 3 – wood and I’m really fighting a hook with both those clubs. I was wondering if you have any thoughts about why that mental and setup change for irons is working so well, but not for the driver. Thanks!
Some woods are more draw biased and have a club face that LOOKS MORE OPEN THAN IT REALLY IS! So people tend to close the face more than the irons by mistake.
Just close enough so that when you release in the direction you want to start the ball, that it flies the way you want it to.

Shawn, is there a guideline for picking the intermediate aiming point when on the course? Sometime it is hard to find a good intermediate point. Is there a too close, too far, “goldilocks” way to help select one that makes it easier to stay focused on it or one that won’t adversely affect the swing?
Steve
Quick question, on the range when I can put an intermediate point on the ground (tee, ball), or stick and alignment rod in the ground a few feet in front of me, I have a very easy time hitting both fades and draws around the intermediate point or around the alignment stick. The issue is when I get on the course. When I stand behind the ball I can pickout a blade of grass or something, but when I address the ball I can’t seem to find the spot and feel a bit lost when setting up. That said if there is a divot, or leaf or something obvious I can hit it exactly like the alignment rod is in front of me.
Any advice for this issue when there isn’t an obvious intermediate point?
2 suggestions: and congrats on achieving success with your system!
1- See my answer to Steve Harvey
2-take a practice swing placing the ball between you and the target and take a couple of healthy divots and let them fly over the ball and in front of the ball; now you have a legal way to find an obvious intermediate point.
Sometimes it is better to start next to the ball and pick one; then step back and see what side of that IP you want to deliver towards for the shot you have; sometimes you have one behind the ball!
If not; try to find the next nearest point in front of you like a fairway bunker or small tree…
My putting has dropped off a cliff lately and I have no confidence from 4 to 10 feet. In my mind i’m putting them “Not to miss” and missing is all I seem to do. I’m turning ball striking rounds that should produce scores in the mid 70’s to scores in the high 80’s. What do I need to do to start making these 4 to 10 foot putts again?
Using the IP to direct the momentum seems simple enough. What is the relation of the club head to the swing. I’m getting a little confused since I feel there’s a significant mis-balance when I grip the club face in a closed position and swinging the club through or by the IP.
I am trying to find the lesson/drill entitled Anti Manipulation. I entered that into the search item without a successful result. Any additional advice on how to find the anti manipulation segment
Hi Shawn, heading out to practice this setup today. I’m excited about the diagonal stance. I was very inconsistent off the drive during my golf league this week. I forgot about the diagonal stance.
