Hi Shawn, if I am imagining cutting the dandelion with the leading edge of club, then where should I imagine the dandelion to be? Under the ball or just behind it? Or instead of the leading edge, should I focus on skidding the bounce of the club under the ball? Are we supposed to push the bounce down through impact? Please feel free to refer to another video of yours that explains all this, if more feasible. Thanks

Sorry for the long question in advance. Just going crazy that we cant get out on course.
Hey Shawn, hope you are doing well during these crazy times. They closed all our golf courses here in Wisconsin so cant get out yet. Been chipping around the yard. How do you work on distance? Is it goldilocks? The last gentleman i was following used specific positions (sorry) for each yardage. Ex. 10 yard chip, choke down on club hinge wrists to 90 turn slow, 20 yards turn little fast, 30 yards full turn.
grab middle of grip, hing elbows to 90 turn slow 40, med 50 fast. 60. Than grip end of club full swing same idea.
I found this very useful, could hit yardages pretty close. But always thinking of position. ( answered own question 🙂
Been using goldilocks in back yard and finding can hit pretty close to where i want, just have to stay with the “cut”. Do you do the same but figure how far your farthest chip goes before hinging? Do you get a yardage with all wedges, currently with old system would use sand wedge. Also flop shots, with old positions, as you opened the club to say 1 oclock would take off 10 yards, 2 oclock off 20. Had somewhat idea insread of guessing. Or Is it all feel?
Also the 1/3. 2/3 is this similar to the rule of 12. I found that to be pretty close as well. Or you just using a wedge for chipping, which works out to the 1/3. 2/3. One part carry 2 parts roll. And just carry more or less depending uphill downhill
Thanks again, hope all is well.

All are good; means that you are practicing! 😀👍
You have the right idea and there no way around it; you have to practice to see. But here is the sure bet: when you use manipulation, you are far less efficient than when using momentum.

See the “hammer drill” video and you will notice that when you bring the face of club against the ball and sandwich against the door you will notice the sole of club is not yet past the “stem of dandelion” which is under the center of the ball. So if you simply cut through the stem ALONG THE GROUND towards the target, you will hit ball first and then stem and then ground.

Thank you Shawn. Hammering through the door frame is my favorite mental model for full swings. But I am hitting my chips thin or thick quite often, which is not a big problem for me during full swing. Should I be hitting slightly down on the ball so leading edge hits the ball, then the dandelion stem under the center of the ball and then the ground?

See the first couple of videos in the beginner series I just did! The chip against the Door frame is part of it and should unblock your view of things! 👍😀

Shawn, Have been playing great golf down here in Georgia, shooting 76-81 daily from the forward tees, while trying to master your teachings. But, I am having severe back spasms. With your knowledge of the anatomy, what could be causing the pain, from the new swing. I am 75 years young.

The first thing I would watch for is STRAIN. You want no more than 3/10 in effort to get 7/10 in whipping velocity. It has to feel easy on the body to get a good whip out of it! 👍😀

SC, I’ve been working on this wider / deeper takeaway but unfortunately the consistency with the driver has diminished. It has felt like the ACU is not matching the hip turn and I’m not in sync at the top then the arms are trying to catch up with the hips and legs in the DS. Then AH HAHHH! I discovered that my stance was not wide enough and it changed everything. I confirmed my theory by watching your driving videos and it appears that even your stance has gotten wider with the driver, I can see why ! The Wider stance seems to slow the hip turn down (?) and that rhythm match’s the turn of the ACU ? Whatever it is , I feel more in sync and my hips don’t fire as much when my legs ‘go get the ground’. Also, it’s much easier to get off that lead leg and let the foot come up with a slightly wider stance. Damn, that took way too many swings to figure out. Should have sent you a video or something. Cheers

Hey Keith! Very cool. See my “width of stance and finish position” video on premium for confirmation so that you find that pocket more easily in the future as a stance that is too wide will not work well either.

Shawn, I do not recall seeing you lift your right foot slightly when starting the back swing. Have I missed that in all the videos I have watched?

Hi Michael! Depends on the mood! 👍😀. I love all the little flow details that allow me to swing freely through to the target with ease and velocity. If I have practiced the walking drill, I will typically do the tapping of that right heel to start the swing for a while after that!

    Hello Shawn,

Will you be doing a series like this on irons and fairway woods??

    Thanks,

At the 8:45 mark when you get behind the ball for a draw is it the turn of the shoulders at setup that gets the club face to appear square, or do you move your hands clockwise to get it to look square? What are your thoughts on split grip practice swings to get a feel for the club being like a hockey stick?

We are uploading Savy’s bonus grip video on premium as we speak; it will help cement the answer to your first question; I like to use split grip when demonstrating hockey and lt’s release; but typically, the split grip will not do much for you in the golf swing apart from that action and hockey feel. It is a bit like trying to hit in baseball with a split grip or a 2 hand backhand in tennis with split grip…it kind of does not belong…

Yes! When I’m out hitting balls and do what you say I’m constantly saying, Shawn was right again. Finally had a round without any sliced drives, now just trying to fine tune this draw!

Is Paul Azinger on your payroll? 😉 In Hawaii he started a discussion about mechanics vs feel. He said that if a PGA player gets tied up into mechanics he will really struggle on the tour. He followed that up with an analogy about having tour players trying to punch out the individual lights on a traffic light with golf shots. He said “I guarantee you none of them will be thinking about mechanics. It is all feel.” I hope you stood up and took a bow. Maybe you could get an excerpt of the NBC telecast and put it on your web site.

Hey Jon! Dang, I missed that one!
Looking back at all the players who lost their way during the time Paul was on tour, he had a first hand look at how devastating technical Thinking was and we haven’t even started on all the very bad technical advice players received in the “nip and tuck resistance years”
      Thank you for posting!!

All right, but I don’t sée how we can have a strong left hand grip as you recomand on your last vidéo with thé thumb on thé top of thé club, and not lateral.

The thumb is slightly to the inside as you will see with the bonus video we are uploading today on premium to back up Savy’s grip and all who have and need a stronger grip. Stay tuned! 👍😀

Great video Savy and Shawn. Love that curly haired Goldilocks. I preload inside my r foot and rotate into my left . Get a nice catapult to the target with no sway and free rotation…out of the way. Stance too wide is impossible leaving me stuck in the middle and attacking the ball.
Short game review would be good video. A weak spot for me.
Audio clips with imaging techniques would be helpful. I use them for taekwondo kicks and punches in prescribed sequences. I do this when I can’t sleep and will now do this with golf swings and putting. Here’s.J.

Great suggestions Jeremy; will get on that; have you seen the beginner series BTW? The first video has the short game and we did a fabulous slow motion short game series at Royal Quebec this last summer; did you see it? I will get a few audio clips going for short game for you guys! 👍😀

Shawn and Savy what a Great video. I played, in Florida, a couple of days ago and I was hitting the ground first and really loosing distance. I know I struggle with weight-shift and understanding the feeling of that weight shift. I play again tomorrow and look forward to practicing this at the range today. Look forward to your next video.

Important video. Had a good summer then fell apart until recently I narrowed my stance and pulled back right foot slightly. Interesting how over time we can make subtle unintentional changes that cause major issues. Would like to see slow motion of you and Sanannah demonstrating your natural lag and right elbow motion in swing (right sided swing). Would also like to see short game videos of you and Savannah as refresher. thanks

Hello Shawn! Really well done video. The teachings with Savvy help me so much as I am a lefty. I’ve been working with different widths/stance as well as angled approach. These are both excellent standards. I tend to get a little more spread out with 5 iron and hybrids. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you and enjoy FL. We are at Belleair CC on west coast. It’s been great playing weather.

      Hey Michael!
Love Belair; that elevator from 9 green to 10 tee is the coolest!!
Yes, the width will change to a little wider as the clubs get longer; keep goldie locks close by if something feels off! Please say hello to Eddie Merrins next time you see him and tell him Shawn said hi! 😀👍
