I really liked this feeling of tossing an axe. It felt good. It took me a while but I realized that when I went back to using the club without the split grip I was not waiting for the axe to finish the toss if that makes sense. It happened by mistake that I noticed a ‘settling’ of the toss almost like a pause then I was able to throw the club toward my target line much more easily and boom the ball just flew. No strain it just went.
Otherwise I was still pulling the ball left badly. So I tried to recapture and replicate the feeling but it kind of came and went. The settled feeling definitely resulted in straighter shots with less effort. I tried switching between the split hand axe technique then regular swing but it was still intermittent. I think I need to know how to lock in this settled feeling at the finish of my back swing. Any ideas?
The fact that it is intermittent is a GREAT THING! It means you know the difference and are aware of the difference between the 2. The key is always at address just before you swing: WHAT ARE YOU GETTING READY TO DO?? Are you trying to hit a ball and letting the brain go do it’s thing that you trained it to do all these years? OR ARE YOU SETTLING IN WITH YOU NEW TASK OF USING THE WEIGHT OF THE ARMS AND CLUB SWINGING FREELY FROM THE SHOULDER SOCKETS THROUGH THE STEM OF THE DANDELION AND OUT MAJESTICALLY AND EFFORTLESSLY INTO YOUR FLIGHT PLAN?
Right there, at address! See “pre-motor cortex series” and “anti manipulation” videos!

Thank you for the above response. When I let the axe fall and my body is getting out of the way….When do I add the leg pumping force???? I saw your video on Rory. Pretty awesome!!
The leg pump is all about the reaction to the weight of the arms and club and that comes from your task about letting it release towards the target. This is something that evolves and develops over time as your practice your task. Shawn
Shawn– if the weight of the arm club unit is increased, would that not make you feel like that total weight is carrying you through the swing without you exerting any force. ” Give up control to gain control” as Knudson said. Isn’t it easier to let gravity work with a heavier club. Just set it in motion and let it happen.. I don’t you can do it with todays light clubs
Sorry for the late reply; this was going to my junk mailbox…Stupid filters!!!
Sorry, I have not been to Michigan as it conflicts with my season up here where things are a little busy! We did come to Chicago a few years but weather in the spring was just too cold…
Finally clicked this past week. I realized when I tried to start to widen my stance I was coming out of posture in the backswing! As soon as I focused on staying in posture, I started flushing my shots. Shot 73 yesterday! Lowest score in a while. Staying in posture has been elusive for me and the light finally lit this week! Love your videos. I pick up something new every time I view them and I watch some of them multiple times!!
That is terrific, so satisfying! Way to go Melanie!
And yes, many say the same thing…they say “how come you never told me that in the first place” or “how did I miss that??”
When you are digesting a certain part of the video, and we keep going, a few things sneak under the carpet…😝😀👍
Get subscribed- Braced tilt: Best golf video I have ever seen. The braced tilt nails ball position also keeps center, centered!
Fantastic. Great teacher a master communicator. Thanks.

What I find compelling is that when you both do the walking drill, you end up hitting from a diagonal stance with your feet turned somewhat outward. Does our “natural” tendency want us to do that when we are at the tee?
Hey Shawn
Should I be worried about a cupped wrist at the top of my backswing with this grip ? Or does that mean I’m not quite doing it as you explained
There is a difference between a cupped wrist and a COLLAPSED wrist. What will settle them nicely is when they both set or hinge on the anatomical snuff boxes; and when they do, you will see the back of both hands look parallel to each other. If the left is cupped and the right is bowed, you will not be hinged, you will be collapsed.
Wow! What a fantastic video ! I favorited it right away. In several of your videos you talk about “whipping the not out of the club” which to me implies an effort to do so, but, I really have been working on letting the weight of the ACU do the job. How do l bring those 2 feeling into harmony?
Hey Joe! Good stuff!
When I say whip the “snot” out of the club, I always add “with ease” or “you need to be able to do it all day long” or with a nice intensity of 7 out of 10 but only 3 out of 10 in the effort category.
This simply requires a nice full range of motion with a fully loaded arm-club unit then a nice throw in the direction you want to start the ball.
Best way to elaborate is through some important videos: please see “hammer drill” and “lead hand release” and “trail hand release” which are done in conjunction with my favourite piece of lumber. Also see a youtube video called “how to get behind the ball shawn clement”
You get behind the hit without giving up your low point in front of the ball.
Enjoy!
Shawn – C. Riddoch, Professor of Sports Science, wrote a book called “The Golf Swing”. Good book. Supports your teachings in many ways. An important issue addressed is the ‘passive wrist release’ (pwr) and dual pendulum which you believe in as well. Where you seem to differ is that he suggests that from the top of the back-swing to hip level work is done by the body/arms and that from that point on one must relax (arms slow down nearly to a stop) to enable the dual pendulum and pwr to happen at peak speed. Then the momentum carries the rest of the swing to the finish. In your videos you promote more relaxing at the top (let it fall) and then pick up the work (push on the swing) when the hands reach about hip level or a bit sooner. My question is do you also relax just before contacting the ball to enable the dual pendulum and pwr?
Not quite, no; these are just feels or observations that occur naturally when performing a task. (see top 3 tasks and task trumps everything videos)
One of my favorites is the “throwing the club” video; and combine that with “predict contact” and “the goldie locks series” videos
Then we can talk some more! 😀👍
No, they have solid tone as they are tracking their arc and having G forces applied to them; think about how they need to feel when you are delivering your task through the ball and towards the target with a nice velocity.
