I notice in other videos , like the new one posted on YouTube. , it appears that you are closing the face of club and then your secondary tilt , makes it open. But on this video , you appear not doing that! Getting confused , what angle club head position should be at the ball?

It all depends on the shot you are trying to hit! See “fade fine tuning” and “draw fine tuning”

This drill/video has really put it all together for me. Love this…. I have been overthinking everything. But now…. 2 thoughts…. backswing to the top…. downswing…. slam the garage door and break the windows…. to the target. Thanks for this great analogy.

Thank you for this video particularly…Even though I have always had a strong leaning grip, this explains even better what I am doing wrong as I was not getting “through” the ball to my target. I had, overtime, begin to stop swinging through to the target and more at the ball itself. Going out to try to correctly swing as instructed here.

does this power grip and set up the same for shots under 100yds,

On full wedges and draw pitch shots, yes! Fades and Flop shots as well as bunker shots we open the face more but keep the same flavour in the set up as we are still moving THROUGH THE BALL AND TOWARDS THE TARGET.

  • From [email protected] on BACKSWING LEVITATION

Hi Shawn – Spent some time at the range working on this (levitation) with the various clubs. The question I have is on the takeaway and getting to the top… in another video (older one)… I noticed that you stepped with the right foot and applies ground pressure to take the club to the top. In some of the other videos, it appears that the feet are quiet, and you are using the core to get to the top. Can you clarify this or point out a video to clear this up. Thanks in advance for your help.

Always using the kinetic chain from the ground up because I am always using the weight of the arms and club to perform the task. I can do it in a lot of different ways is all; but the base is very much the same!!

Balance is a big one for me… especially with the driver. As you grip the ground with the inside of your feet, are you using the ground to start the takeaway and make the body turn into the backswing?

This video is gold Shawn, good job 🙂
I’ve always found golf grips ridiculously small compared to a tennis racket or a baseball bat. Bryson Dechambeau uses huge grips (XL size which is +6/16 whereas Midsize is +1/16) from the company jumbomax. Without going to extremes like Bryson, using a bigger grip could allow you to gain in feeling by holding it more in the palm but without create the famous space that makes the club float usually with a smaller grip.

    What do you think?

Actually no; Bryson is an angles guy and missed the memo on leverage in the hands; what is important is the security of the hold and the ability to compress the juice out of it; now that Bryson has gained his mass, this is helping big time. Moe’s grips were bigger but surprisingly way less than you would think and when Natural Golf came out with their grips, he would still come back to his leather wraps that fit his hand best.

Shawn I’ve been working hard on this and the draw was giving me fits. I was lining up parallel to my intermediate point playing the ball back, getting behind it and still having issues for the ball going right on me and hooking even with a strong grip. Once I started lining up To the right edge of the intermediate point (another golf ball) by draw started getting much tighter and not going right. I guess I kept thinking I need to aim right at my target for the draw and expecting a push draw but this doesn’t work for me consistently.

Maybe it’s my anatomy being slightly different or the way my mind sees it but for me to draw back to target I must aim right and draw it back.

The Perpetual motion drill helped me feel the release so much better. And along with the alignment change I wasn’t hooking the ball.

I find that hooding the club at address and having my hands neutral (effectively the same as a strong grip of course) forces me to take the club back with my left (Lead) side in my backswing, and then it forces me to swing down through the ball with my right side and my right hand staying in lag position on order to not hook it. So the hooding forces me to really feel that I have to keep that lag longer and not release early. It’s honing the feeling of holding off on the release until I’m through the ball and then also releasing out to the right more. It’s great fun when it works. Great contact and picking up an extra club length.

Now, can you do a video on the angle of attack. I feel that the reason I’m still not getting enough compression to get the distance I should be is because of the angle I’m coming into the ball. Even at my best hits coming through the ball I can only carry my 9 iron 135yds draw. I’d like to get 140-150 out of my 9.

    Your thoughts?

Shawn, I stumbled into something I wanted to share. My favorite analogy right now is cutting grass. While hitting balls off a mat I rolled a ball that ended up towards the front part of the mat. For some reason I addressed the ball and my front foot ended up being right on the edge of the mat. I took a nice easy cut of the grass and just striped the ball. I now fell like I’m cutting grass off the edge of a canyon. I finish into a solid right side ( I’m left handed). It’s like your old braced tilt videos!

Great video Shawn and excellent Instruction as has become your hallmark! Doug D here. If you go back and look at my videos from last year, you’ll see that I suffered from the “neutral” grip. But not anymore! Can’t wait to send you my video this month with the “strong” (45 degree close) as you describe in this video. Worked hard on it for a couple of weeks and I’ve got it. I have gained 10 yards in my wedges! 30 yards in my Driver and the ball is flighting straight. Or fading when I play that shot. But there is something else I discovered. When I take that grip and set up with that natural tilt, as you show in the video, for some reason, I automatically feel totally “connected to”, able to access easily, my back swing.! The takeaway, hip rotation and full turn all seem easily achieved now. I’m not sure why, all I know is how it feels. Any thoughts on that aspect of this? Look forward to your response.

Awesome feedback Dan and yes, it is feeling better in the backswing because now you are getting ready to deliver the action THROUGH THE BALL and OUT IN THE DIRECTION YOU WANT TO START THE BALL! (Cue the singing choir)
Before you were probably setting up to the ball with no purpose, following the “to do list” of a Golf Digest teacher without knowing if it fits or not. Then when it came time to swing, it was harder because the direction from upper management was scrambled.
Now you have a purpose, a direction, a task, and you are in a position to evolve your game to new heights!
Congrats to you, really really! 😀👍

OK – Sav, we have “ Nice Miss”, “ One hit wonder” and “ it’s not that you’re right”!!!!
Could be time for a volunteer to film from behind the net so we can see how the “1 hit wonder” goes hitting at a target!!!
Just joking – way to dangerous!!
Mmmm, unless you have some hockey gear?

  • From [email protected] on Kinetic Chain - Part 4

Is the kinetic chain engagement of the glutes and quads going to be the same between the irons, fairway woods, and driver? I am thinking that the driver might be slightly less, since the ball is on a tee and we are catching the ball as the club is moving up on the arc. Is this correct?

    Go to comment
    • From Shawn Clement on Kinetic Chain - Part 4

Same for all! You are throwing the club to a target and creating and generating an arc. The kinetic chain engagement is completely autonomous (part of the self preserving system) and necessary on all clubs and all shots; even uphill shots!

Awesome video! Had problems to watch it quietly , got all nervous and very tempted to drive straight to the range. Lost a little bit my mojo the last weeks – listened too much to others – but feel back on track now. Love the baseball clip you added in – great to see this energy, power and similarity with golf. Thanks team!!!
