  • From [email protected] on TURBO CHARGED LEAD HAND RELEASE

I don’t know if this makes sense, but I was playing around with the lead hand release and levitation. I noticed that if I take the club back slightly higher, pause, and keep the lead arm straight through impact (or attempt to keep it straight, not letting the elbow collapse too much)…. it improves my contact and consistency. Not sure why. Does this make sense? Any videos on this lead arm thing?

What you just improved on was the TONE with which you are performing your task! Like the different kind of grasses to cut through in the “grass whip training” video and the different types of scenarios in the “pre-motor cortex” series! 😀👍

I feel like I have and intermediate point and a target but when I am thinking of throwing the club I am hooking the ball too much. Any suggestions.

Yes, what is the level of effort on your throws?? See “pre-motor cortex series” and fine tune the delivery first; then see “using the weight in the swing-axe drill with Savy” and finally “draw fine tuning”
Let me know how you do!

Revisited this video. Oldie but goodie! Can you clarify the brace tilt with a fairway wood and hybrid where you are skipping a stone with the sole.

    • From Shawn Clement on Braced Tilt

It is the same braced tilt with a slightly more forward ball position Sumit; you still need to catch the ball first then along the ground if you are to hit the quality shots; together with “goldie locks series” you want to goldie locks the tilt too!

Shawn, all my problems in my swing result from moving way in front of the ball I have had a posterior laminectomy and fusion from C-3 to C-7 in my neck. Question -do you think that my surgery inhibits my swing-i.e. moving my head so far in front of the ball? This video has my attention , and I will try to do what you show. So I guess I can find if I can do it. You give all of us golfers hope and knowledge. Many Thanks

Yes!! If you do the same drill as here with the hammer and see “hammer drill” video and do the same there, you should have no issues at all!

  • From [email protected] on Kinetic Chain - Part 3

    Hey Shawn!

I’m relatively new to golf and am learning so much from your videos! I had a question regarding my lead arm (left arm). How long does it normally stay straight on the follow through? My friend who is a very low handicap says that it should remain almost straight until its parallel to the ground. However, your kinetic chain videos don’t appear to show it held straight that long. I could be mistaken though. Obviously I want to avoid the chicken wing though. Any guidance?

Oh man, you will hear all the colours of the rainbow when it comes to swing positions and body part manipulations, dos and don’ts, make sures, etc.
This is why you need a task! See “task trumps everything” and “top 3 tasks” and really get good at delivering through with your task.
When you are able to plug in your task to your golf shots both mentally and physically, you will have better width naturally without thinking about it. Right now, you are struggling with it because you are so focused on not missing the ball and when you send your swing to the ball, there is no follow through because for the brain, the ball is the end.

    Hi,

What’s your thoughts on larger grips such as jumbo Max grips? Will these make any diffference for my swing etc?

    Br,
    Anton

    • From Shawn Clement on The Grip - Part 2

If you look at Munashe’s hands, he has too much finger length for even mid size! So we ordered Jumbo grips on his Ping Irons; we should receive them soon. So, hand size is one, or arthritic hands is another, (in which you want to read the “longevity paradox” by Dr. Steven Gundry, which looks very similar to Grain Brain by Dr David Perlmutter) and last, how are you able to secure the grip for max compression; so the best is to go to a golf store and clamp down on different sizes with the lead hand and see which size you “Clamp on” the most securely.

What is your weight distribution at set up and during the swing? It appears to me you are favoring the front foot.

    • From Shawn Clement on DIAGONAL SERIES PART 4-DRIVER!

Yes, and the reason is I am getting ready to deliver my action through the ball and towards the target as well as I am partially into my follow through to give me a little momentum into the backswing. See “how to use the weight in your swing-axe drill with Savy and then see “weight shift with Savy”

Shawn, great series the ball position in goldielocks weather you aim a little left for fade or a little right for draw, where are your feet stance parallel to? Are you keeping them turned slightly left or right or straight parallel to center dot and just moving ball back and forward ?

    thanks

      If you look at fade fine tuning and draw fine tuning videos you will be able to put the pieces together and answer these questions;
It all starts with a ball flight plan.

  • From [email protected] on IMPORTANT GRIP UPDATE

Hi Shawn, hope all is well. Quick question. I’m getting fitted for my new golf clubs this week. I know during a fitting, they will want you to hit a couple of balls. When I do that, I know that the fitting coach is going to try to correct me. I wanted to ask if the way you are teaching how to grip and swing the club, will that affect the outcome of my fitting? I know the coach is going to do what you said in this video – “your grip is too strong” and he/she will try to correct me, especially since I’m a beginner. Thought it was prudent to ask since golf fittings can be costly. Thanks!

      No pressure;
Just whip through the dandelion stem in the direction over the intermediate point; make sure you place a tee in front of the ball (a couple feet away so you don’t keep hitting it)
Then which through the stem that way with each club without making sure of anything; see which clubs you hit most flush with most of the time and then they will determine shaft flex and material and weight, lie of club, size and material of the grip and based on the swing speed, determine which irons you should have in the bag (5 to gap or 4 to PW as an example)
      Have fun!

  • From [email protected] on Alignment Lesson with Michael

Shawn – I could not find a video on alignment other than this one, so here goes. I play in a company golf league and have played the same course for 32 years. There is one hole that is wide open and I have had trouble hitting my tee shot in play on this hole – it is a 500 yard par 5 that must have 200 yards of width to hit it into. Another player mentioned how hard it can be to hit a good tee shot there even though it was wide open, this past Thursday.

The thing about this hole is that it is wide open and straight away like a runway – there is really nothing to aim at. There is a fence along the right side and a stand of trees left. Those are both common miss locations – as if the finish of a Don’t hit it… at the trees, at the fence, line of thinking.

Have you ever done anything with how to aim on a hole where there is nothing to aim at? You have your intermediate point, but the mind (at least mine) can be unsatisfied with that, despite familiarity with the hole? I pick out a location on the fairway but I think it may be easier to lose that spot versus a tree.

You do understand that you always use the intermediate point to deliver the shot too right? Combine this with a specific flight plan of fade or draw and a specific height for the shot and you can fit the ball just about anywhere!

Two questions: it appears in the Mu demonstration at the top of the swing, you had a cupped lead wrist. Is this a concern? And I am trying to find the right position for the trail hand on the club and grip type (overlap or interlock). Should the trail hand come alongside the lead hand On the club or more on top of the lead?

    Go to comment
    • From Shawn Clement on IMPORTANT GRIP UPDATE

We talk about this in our grip videos; it is NOT cupped; it is a proper hinge on the snuff box with a strong grip; just like Webb Simpson’s-Bubba Watson-Zack Johnson’s and so many others. And you want the hands facing each other-just like we talk about in the “most important video on grip ever” video.

Question Shawn…does this make sense to error on the side of a narrow stance in general? I feel like times in an effort to be careful I widen my stance…this drill makes me think that that is about the worst thing I can do. The wider I get the less my pendulum works. As a general rule should I error on the side of narrow with all clubs?

    • From Shawn Clement on One Leg Drill

You bet Charlie! See “width of stance and finish position video and this will confirm that a stance that is too wide will backfire with your natural kinetic chain! While you are at it, a nice series to watch is the kinetic chain series! 👍

    Hi Shawn
What is the fine tuning needed so that the club brushes ahead of the ball towards the target and behind the ball away from the target.
    Thanks

    • From Shawn Clement on PERPETUAL MOTION SEQUENCE FAIRWAY WOODS!

Hi Mohanjit! When you throw the club towards the target, and you are low enough to brush the grass, you are going to brush at the proper place naturally. Use the “goldie locks series” to fine tune ball position, distance to ball, levels and club and club face. You can use the PMD’s release points to get past the ball on each side.

I’ve been working on this perpetual swing with the various clubs. Sometimes, when I gather at the top and grab the ground, my push to follow through misses the timing and hands come down before my body is coming up to the finish. Would you suggest working on isolating the lower body motion as a drill to the movement correct?

    • From Shawn Clement on PERPETUAL MOTION SEQUENCE FAIRWAY WOODS!

The throwing the club video! You simply cannot mess that up!
Find a safe place and some old steel shafted clubs to perform this; then see “predict contact” and the “goldie locks” series to allow you to stay on the task of throwing the club towards the direction you want to start the ball (through the intermediate point)
