Very important tip about head going back and allowing the snap of the release.

I’ve noticed that you and your students in the Driver training video’s have the Driver about 4-6″ behind the ball at address, is there a reason for this? Does it help you maintain your tilt. I usually hold my Driver just behind the ball at address. However, it does feel like I am reaching forward and I’m most likely not centered…

This is a huge staple in our teachings; see one of my oldest videos on youtube with over 700K hits called “great driver tip shawn clement” and then see our main driver videos here on premium “driver” “driver part 2” “driver part 3” and also “great driver nugget” for perfecting and polishing the stance with the driver depending on whether you fade or draw the ball off the tee. Enjoy!

Following or projecting the throw through the ball is often missed by me. Even with putting and chipping as the ‘ball as target’ becomes the default process. Retraining the mind with some key physical confirmation for the effortless process is your mantra and for me is the Key. So enjoy these videos. Thanks Shawn…

I think a big short circuit is if you let the momentum carry through the ball, that is one task you are giving the brain but throwing the club is another. And getting out of the way is also another task. You have to “get out of the way” to “throw the club” so do you get out of the way ? or do you throw the club ? Doing a video on this is a huge game changer IMO. I can see the brain getting in the way on this big time. I can go on and on with other examples but I think you get the point. Another could be “the focus is the target not the ball”. But again now you are giving the brain another task.
    Hope your well Shawn!

Great video. Do you recommend using one club “Lob wedge”, with various ball position, setup etc. to match task, versus using various clubs to change trajectory to perform the task. In your opinion, which method is the easiest to prefect.

If your intermediate point is lined up with the white building, are you throwing the club at any specific target right of that? See 4.45 onwards

    Shawn,
I am so glad I found this video. I really had a problem swinging freely on the course. After watching this video, the very next round, the difference was unbelievable. My swing was effortless and tension free. What an enjoyable way to play this game.
    Thanks!

Right on Scott! We will be adding a really nice series on course to this one called “offensive vs defensive” so that the frame of mind brings you to this state every time or at least makes you aware of the way that you are thinking so that the following times are even better.

When I throw the ACU towards the target should the 2 arms be like 1 unit with the forearms rotating through to a ping pong release? I ask this because sometimes my dominant right hand tries to hit at the last minute

Hey Joe! Sorry I missed this one! You are allowing the weight of the club release the arms and hands in the direction you want to send the ball; the best video to experience this release is the “snap release polish” video. Then see “target confirmation series” and “arc-blur unstoppable momentum series to apply properly. If you fell the need to use the right side, your grip is not strong enough or you are getting ahead of the ball because you are defaulting to the ball.

Relatively new to Premium and have a question relating to hitting draws with the driver. When hitting irons I understand the need to close the face to gather the ball dynamically, but does the face need to be closed to draw the driver?

Some woods are more draw biased and you won’t need to close as much and some need to be closed more! The key is to deliver the action in the direction you want to start the ball and see how the ball flies! That is the dynamic way to do it; then according to your club and your swing, you get your recipe for success!

  • From [email protected] on Grip Update

Hi Shawn, I just joined you premium subscription but looking at you on youtube for a few months. I am a beginner golfer (about 4 months now…54 years old, back surgery for a career in Army). Your stuff and personality are FANTASTIC and give me hope!

This is my first question here (and the the first of many, probably).

I understand the grip, in theory, but with the controlling grip (versus sloppy, too easy, which is what I had before), is the idea that you release the club and consciously roll the arm and hands over during the release, or is that a natural, non-conscious effect of the hands moving through the release point? When I practice one-arm sword drills (which was a light bulb moment for me for the cock, swing, release, recock) with each hand and feel the incredibly easy whipping that I never felt before, it seems like I do not have to think very purposely on timing the release.

But when I put both hands together, and have a sufficiently secure grip, it seems like I lose some of that intuitive feeling of the release point and timing. And when I loosen my grip to where it feels sloppier again, the club seems to release on its own.

Hoping you could advise me here.

BTW, I tried your swing (or my best effort at it) yesterday at the range for the first time with my 7 iron (the only club I took so I wouldn’t have too much variation trying to learn), and I hit it 180 yards, straight, over and over and felt like it was so easy I was laughing out loud. I am not a natural golfer and have never been able to hit far or make consistent contact, so this was huge for me!!! You rock!

    Thanks for any advice!

You are very close! See “pre-motor cortex” series and realize that the “allowing the club head to release you” is where it’s at and all you need to do is feel at what intensity the grip needs to be to simply mot let go or fall apart during the release and re-hinge into the finish. Keep going, you are doing great!

Sorry to post this here, but I didn’t see any other contact method. I would like to rewatch the “Arm Swing VS Body Turn” video, but I keep getting a 404 on the link. Thanks for looking into this. Also, this speed video is great.

Aloha from Maui Shawn! Loved this video, it definitely helped me create more lag. I did notice that I had a harder time staying with my target and releasing on either side of my intermediate point when I was focused on letting the butt of the club lead the way in the direction I wanted to start the ball. Any suggestions?

I hope the man, the myth, the legend who is Mr Shawn Clement is having a great day. Quick question for you. I got myself a grass whip over here in the UK, and when I swing with the grass whip and do the perpetual motion drill with my driver I have the most perfect on plane swing which feels great and not my horrible inside and off plane backswing…but as soon as I get behind the ball I’m back to my inside and off plane backswing and poor ball striking…could you please advise me on drills to change this…I’ve been swinging the whip a few minutes each day and also been doing the perpetual motion swings when I take a break from work but so far it has not stopped me from going back to that dreaded inside takeaway and the super flat backswing, almost a baseball swing, any help would be greatly appreciated?

Thanks, Shawn! New subscriber and really kicking myself for not finding you sooner.

I’ve spent years fighting my tendency to pull the club inside on the way back after being told “you need to take it back straight”. Now I’m releasing the club through impact like never before but I have a lot of left misses – draws that start straight and end up left of target, rather than starting right of target.

Alignment? Picking a better intermediate point as my target? You’ve got so much great material that any specific videos to look at is appreciated!

You want to practice the fade to to balance things out and have fun also starting your draw shots way more out to the right. Bottom line after that, you make a prediction at address (see “predict contact” and the “goldielocks series”) and stay with the direction of the arc-blur through the intermediate point all the way into the release (see target confirmation series) and see how the ball flies. If you get the pattern you just described, your club face is simply a bit too closed. But you need confirmation that you DELIVERED THROUGH ALL THE WAY FIRST.

I have had a problem with consistently lately. My partner feels that I am flipping or cocking my wrists at the top, creating a hitch. Any idea what analogy I should use to eliminate? I am thinking about throwing a sledge hammer which helps, but then I start to concentrate on the position of my wrists. thank you

    • From Shawn Clement on Purpose of the Backswing

Hey Jason! Haha, there it is!! You are concerned about the position of the wrists in the backswing and that is where the focus is so of course there will be a hitch in that sucker! 😝👍!
Use the perpetual motion drill big time. As you swing back and through without stopping, you can then bring your mind to different areas of the swing and become aware of the way the wrists hinge as an example. If you feel everything is good, then when you get to the ball, you focus only on the feel of the release (see lead hand release, trail hand release, and release fine tuning videos) in the direction following the arc-blur to the side of the intermediate point you want to deliver into.

There is no way you can get a descent release without a proper hinge so with that “order” to the brain, it will go get a nice hinged backswing for you, the one you felt in the PMD drill. But if you interfere with the flow of things by making sure, you throw a BIG FAT WRENCH into the movement.
