@ 14.34 of video (release, exactly at moment of pronation): Would you say that, right at that moment of pronation, the golf swing release feels the same as release from swinging a baseball bat? And if not, what are relevant differences? Thanks.
Hi George! You bet! All the videos in here cater to both sides; My daughter’s swing and my left handed swing are in the same boat as your’s and this is why we speak of the “arc-club unit” as one single unit that works as a block.
videos for individual arm understanding are important though and you definitely want to use the trail arm and train the feel of what it is supposed to be doing as an understanding and not as a “must train”. Videos which are core are “lead hand release” for both backswing and through swing, trail hand release, release fine tuning, and snap release polish are huge ones, then turbo charge lead hand release, and turbo charge trail hand release are super as well!
the throwing series are then the next priority and you are throwing with both arms of course and his is Savy’s favourite go-to task. Then “target confirmation series” and all “pre-motor cortex series” videos. Analogies to suit you are also two hand Hammer drill, axe drill, and hammer toss in the “pumping up the volume” video. Enjoy and keep me posted!
Hey Shawn!
see the “diagonal stance series” and you will see the fade and draw videos with driver with Diagonal stance and that will shed some light! The deal is you are whipping the tip of the tee into the direction you want to start the ball, you then PREDICT where the ball position needs to be for you not to have to lunge or reach back.
Hey Shawn! Just answered the driver question for you; what you need to see is the “predict contact” and the “goldie locks series”. EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT when it comes to face closure, and the way through it is in those videos; enjoy!!
New to golf since April 2021; early 60s. At the range on the weekend, working on 3 wood off deck; initially struggling with solid contact, even with “whipping skip / deflection” as task. After many balls, had worthwhile realization that take-away of club head (to achieve desired strike path) works better when both hands feel activated (both to feel like full contributors to the movement, as opposed to one being more just along for the ride). I wasn’t conscious of that difference before; probably defaulting to my dominant hand (which is right hand / trail hand), in my take-away.
Hi Shawn! Joined a few months ago and love all the great wisdom and content. I would love to see a series (if you don’t have one) on “how to practice.” I spend a decent amount of practice time indoors with a launch monitor with ball and club data. I find myself trying to perfect my swing and ball striking with a given club and an hour later I have hit a ton of balls and don’t feel like I am improving much – maybe even reinforcing bad habits. I am specifically curious about starting with partial and/or slow swings and slowing building up to a full swing in a session or while practicing a specific skill. Any suggestions for building a solid practice plan?
Hey Kyle! Yes!
we have 3 series for this called “off season training series”; the original at the bottom of the list of videos by date and the 2020-2021 we did last fall-winter and add to that the “consistency series” and you will have a solid evolution of prioritized practice!😀👍💪👌
Hi Stephen! Most golfers don’t close the face nearly as much as they should with the driver; see the first few videos in the “consistency series” at the bottom of the “list of videos by date”
Shawn:
I had really been struggling unleashing the kinetic chain. Fabricated an impact board I finally felt what it was like to grab the ground and unleash the chain. Shot a nice 81 net 64 today by far my lowest rd of the year. I feel confident I can take the chain into my next league rd on sat.
Yes, you bet! This is what will happen when you stay on task and use the weight of the arms and club to deliver the dandelion stem into the direction you want to start the ball; see “kinetic chain engagement” series as well as “task update” uploaded recently! 😀👍
Hi Shawn, I have sent you two videos for swing analysis. And the part where you ask for my task, I was confused as to what task am I performing. I was telling you more about my focus on my release or staying behind the ball etc. After watching this video, I think I now have a better idea of what you are asking for. Hope on my next swing analysis ( which by the way will be the end of this month) I do tell you my actual task.
Hi, Shawn. Draw setup for driver. New golfer. Your materials immensely helpful and workable.
I’m beginning to get draws with driver working. Doesn’t come easily for me, unlike fades with driver. (I’m one of those who found your materials searching for “how to fix slice”.) One big difference for me, compared to fade setup with driver and with all other clubs, is that, at setup, my belt buckle (centre) feels no longer right angled to target line; points more to right (trailing) side. (Especially with diagonal stance.) And that, combined with ball-forward position for driver draw, has me feeling that ball impact will be on the portion of the arc that is out-to-in. [When I’m aware that draw ball flight needs in-to-out path, with face closed to that swing path].
Hitting up from low point to tee is no problem. It seems that it’s the change in position of my center that makes me doubt the swing path. (So predicted success of swing path on draw attempt still more a matter of faith in following a process than knowing.) Sometimes there’s a feeling that, in order to throw through right side of IP, the swing path will need to extend in a straight line at 45 degrees, and not a pure arc coming around. As I say, I do get things to work; just give me several attempts. But the perception is weird. Perhaps related, tho I realize you don’t put things this way: on fade side, with driver, at setup, I can see the ball-flight geometry clearly; on draw side, although I’m aware of the ball-flight geometry concepts for that kind of shot, I don’t (yet) have a clear picture.
Hey Donald! You are on the right track with everything; very cool! See the “arc-blur unstoppable momentum” videos and the “blur of club” video to get more clarity with what you are saying here! 👍😀
I am new here and happy to be on board :-).After 3 years without golf I would like to start again with the goal to have used the break sensibly and to release like after the backswing with the momentum towards the goal (a better golf swing) :-). I come from Germany and have already practiced club throwing according to Fred Shoemaker with a coach here in 2016, which has also brought me further. After the restart, the club throwing still works very well, but I’m struggling with the idea of where to look in the backswing and downswing… without losing focus of the actual target (direction where the ball should start towards the target)… what is your recommendation? which drill helps and is there a difference from iron to driver?…some told me to look to the lowest point in the swing..so irons in front of the ball and driver behind the ball.. @23:14 you told us something about this topic..but I am struggeling..
Hello Nils! Yes, please use the search box in the upper right corner and search “arc blur unstoppable momentum and kinetic chain”
those videos are perfect for what you need!
In your text overlay, I believe you meant to say, “something good is about to happen”, not “something god is about to happen”… or perhaps it was godly.
I’m watching that video few hours after my practice at the range this morning (which is now equipped with Trackman). I was doing well until I got to the 6 and 5 irons, and things started to be more difficult, my gapping was bunching up.
Using that very drill I realised, hey I’m too close to the ball that’s why I’m struggling to hit it flush. After the posture correction, the only thing left was stopping being careful and swinging freely and voilà, I got back the 10m carry I thought I had lost 🙂
Then I come here for my weekly golf wisdom, and you guys confirm that I did it right! I’m such a good student 🙂
Can’t wait to see that drill in action for the driver.
