  • From Matthew Costello on PERPETUAL MOTION DRILL DRIVER! PART 1

Shawn, been revisiting the PMD in conjunction with the release work you’ve had me doing

There’s a specific feel I have sometimes that I can only describe as the club head is always behind my hands in both directions and when it “releases” it’s “jumping” over my hands into a leading position

So on the backswing / takeaway it’s slightly outside my hands, as the release in the backswing occurs around 4 o clock the club head jumps “behind” my hands. Then the downswing my hands lead the trailing clubhead through impact and then it jumps to the other side again at 8 o clock

The sensation of its sort of being towed through the impact zone by the kinetic chain and always remaining behind my hands.

Is this what you’re seeking ?

Shawn thanks for kind offer to view my swing. I need to work on “backswing master class ideas before making any videos. Can I take a rain check. I’m the self – conscious type.

I just wanted to tell the WIG world that I had a 220 yard drive two days ago. My longest are 200. First drive of that day and nothing that distance since (lol) but encouraging.

Congrats on the new benchmark Krista! Now that the brain has it, it will continue to organize around getting it more for you. You got a good dose of dopamine on that one and that is the breadcrumb trail it will use to get it back; the key is stay with the process and don’t try hard or try to repeat! 😝

Thank you so much for everything, I hit a hard wall this morning with someone telling me about MY swing positions, so that was a fun psychological test…. it just solidified how grateful I am to the work you, Sav and Mu are doing. Peace and happy wedding vibes

    Shawn

I have been watching for a couple of months now and have been making improvements to my swing. I loved you story about the Dart throwing and after watching this one on the backswing I can honestly say the dispersion of my shots is getting tighter! however I lost some distance due to also putting a pause at the top of my swing which has forced me to slow down in my downswing and get to the ground before easier and not over rotate. I love the accuracy but need to now work on getting distance back. Suggestions?

Also my driver swing has gone off a bit and need to refine that to get rid of a slice that has come in along with a lower ball flight and sometimes hitting the ball at the very top of the club at times.

Hey Joe! Normal at first as you are controlling the action and this is like driving your car with the foot on the brakes and on the gas at the same time. See “driver tip of tee” video as well as “alignment reset” series, “blur of club” and “arc-blur unstoppable momentum series”

    Hi Shawn,

When you are setting up to your ball are you placing more weight on your front foot, in order to ensure that your weight shift to the rear and then back to the front?

    • From Shawn Clement on Trust Your Swing

Hi Robert! Yes, just like in the “perpetual motion drill series” we are in the “follow through” at address and in the process of letting momentum come into the backswing, which requires the right leg and foot to secure the ground and remove the body out of the way to gather wide and up into the backswing and then during the weightless transition, the brain grabs the ground with the lead leg (trail leg accommodates this and squats with it) to prepare to allow momentum to release us into the direction of flight.

  • From Matthew Costello on New WIG Task | Frisbee Throwing

This is a great task Shawn. I still can get the arms a bit too far across my body in the backswing, and I instinctually stop the rotation and end up cutting across the ball. This shows up under the gun when trying to “make sure”. Played 9 holes with this tonight and hit 7 greens and shot +1. Even as a trail hand dominant player this is viable. Good stuff! Really got a full turn for me and was hitting my normal distances with way less effort and no over the top misses

One of my favourite tasks to play with on my left handed swing and to teach backhand players in general as well as using this to create width with players like you! Exactly the desired effect! 👍💪🔥

In the middle of a series of practice right now where I am doing 15-nine irons, 15 six irons, 15 hybrids and 15 drivers for 15 days straight and the learning is quite interesting as I stay with the same task of sending divots on the irons and hybrid and sending tee tips into forward summersaults with the driver WITH MOMENTUM ONLY. The off season series starting in November will be epic!

Shawn how important is that pause at the top of the backswing. Seems to me it’s important to let everything catch up. Am I right?

Hope the wedding was fun Coach! This video is so good! I’ve been doing a lot of backswing work. I realized I was lifting my arms IN the takeaway, not allowing the trail arm folding to get the club up

When I lift, pause, let it fall it basically goes out to in. No access to the right side of the IP

When I just rotate the body to start the backswing first, getting the ribs out of the way with conviction in the takeaway, I have access to the right side of the IP

    Great mile markers!

  • From Ryan Petit on FLOW STATE SERIES INTRO-PUTTING

Wow Shawn, this is literally the Holy Grail in so many ways, and is a wonderful meeting point of two great disciplines. Just as wearing a polo t-shirt has nothing to do with hitting a good golf shot and what it takes to get there, so too, being a monk has nothing to do with the “feedback loops” one has to perform to achieve true mental well being. Either social constructs may have contextually helped you to do the process, but neither are “fundamental”.

I hope you’ve been able to go down the rabbit hole with the box breathing, I believe your prior work in golf will really prime you for great success there. Box breathing before meditation works really well, as it really primes the body to switch from residual fight/flight modes to the parasympathetic. If I may, coming from long years of study in the Philosophy/Meditation area, one tip…make sure to give at least 5 to 10 mins at the end of your box breathing to soak up the inner state you’ve created with it and really just do nothing but enjoy it. Shine the light of your awareness on it and just observe it. Its fundamentally training the brain to see what it is capable of experiencing within itself and over time you’ll be like Seve Ballestero’s attitude of 4 putting, but with the vicissitudes of everyday life.

Your mind will remember that “home base”/”zone” and really resist ever leaving it and creating unnecessary “bee hives” around everything, which seems to be our default mode that everyone gets by adulthood. You will still make efforts to better any situation, like Seve’s putting efforts to get the ball in the hole, but your mind won’t “suffer” situations any more, as was its past habit, and consequently you will not only be more blissful, but actually more beneficial with actually handling them, which is quite an accomplishment!

Anyhow, thanks so much for your work in golf, it has really helped me enjoy that side of life and literally your way of teaching makes it 100% compatible with some of the highest philosophical teachings (e.g. Stoicism/Yoga/Buddhism/Christian Contemplation) of how to “actually” live the “good” life that I have ever found in my academic and practical studies. If, Socrates ever played golf, and you were alive, he would have most definitely inquired with you first on how to properly do it! Thanks again and all the best!

Wow, nice post Ryan; I am very honoured to be a part of your golfing life and humbled by the way you so eloquently framed how our way of “being” in golf is so compatible with the more efficient ways of meditating. Really appreciate what you confirm and bring to the table with box breathing as I continually come back to it to manage the extra little stresses that inevitably come to everyone’s daily life. Let’s bring golf next level together! 👍👊

Great drill Shawn. I strike and release it better when I do the drill, then when I actually play and start from a static position in the setup. I can’t seem to get the same momentum as in the drill. Thoughts on how to incorporate it?

  • From Matthew Costello on HOW TO STOP PUSHING WITH RIGHT HAND

This is me when I’m going poorly! Messing around today w lead arm only swings chipping. Then I’d lightly add the trail hand and I could feel the weight of the club so much better

Took it over to full swings. Same thing. I felt to me what felt like a later set and way more lag coming into the ball. The ball jumped so effortlessly.

What is the follow up video to this you allude to in the beginning? Is a good way to apply this to feel a lighter trail hand grip pressure though the swing?

Iir almost felt like those “Scottish lag” videos you’ve done in the past and you demonstrated to me at the clinic in CT a couple years ago.
