  • From Joe Smits on USING WEIGHT TO HIT THE SHOTS-AXE DRILL WITH SAVY

Hi Shawn! I have been really loving all your great premium content since I joined earlier this month! I have one quick question. When I’m gathering the club up in my backswing, I’ve noticed that my trail heel comes off the ground some. Is that okay or should I try to keep my trail foot down?

    Thanks!

Hey Joe! No, this is not good as it means you are out of balance; I see this a lot with golfers trying to “make sure” to keep the head down in the backswing or turn the shoulder under the chin or whatever positional distraction you may have that prevents your machine from performing.
1-do some feet together drill (see video)
2-then see “feet together back to feet apart”
      3-see “perpetual motion drill series”
      4-see “balance mile markers”
Very important question you sent!! This will help a lot of golfers who have the same issues!! So thank you for that. Shawn

It’s been good to get into this. I’ve been smashing the driver and trying to dial in a nice high draw with it. One thing I get is a well struck ball that doesn’t turn over back to the target. Perhaps I need to close the face more or release a bit less right of my target?

You are on the right track!
1-you gotta be able to put your hand in the fire and swear you stayed with a nice RELEASE in the direction you wanted to start the ball.
2-if not, what distracted you from performing that?
3-if you do stay with it, congrats! You are on your way as then you can identify a pattern and make small adjustments as you go!

    • From [email protected] on DRIVER POLISH SESSION - OFF SEASON TRAINING (11)

      That’s exactly it!

Confirming the release has been huge. When I know I released it where I intended, it’s easy to observe the pattern as you said.

No thinking about wrist angles or back swing depth. Just making the adjustment to the release or the face or simply playing the ball flight!

If I set up left of the fairway and release to the center of the fairway and the ball goes straight down the fairway, who is gonna argue with that?!?

This is a fabulous drill. I took it to the driving range twice now. I do fine taking the club back from the hands through position, pausing at the top and swinging through. It is a very different feel for me, and the result was good for most swings. I can’t follow the ball well, however I felt like the ball was going to travel further than normal. When I try to go back to starting the swing from addressing the ball, I cannot seem to duplicate that swing!! I have only started, but any quick tips?? I may not be bringing the club back properly and setting my hands at the top.

Where are your feet lined up. Are they lined up at the pin or where you want to start the ball?

    Go to comment
    • From Shawn Clement on Working the Ball

At the pin for a draw and in the direction you want to start the ball for the fade; fade the ball is forward of centre and draw the ball is back of centre. Ball position makes alignment. See “the goldie locks series” to learn how to predict set up and see fade fine tuning and draw fine tuning for more!

Excellent video. I have watched many videos. What is the easiest swing thought to take to the course. Invariably I have a hundred different things I think about.

Hey Gregg! You always play with a task or a collection of tasks that you match up with different situations! Example: Door frame or Battering ram would be for into the wind shots and sending dandelion stems into the air would be for high shots downwind. You would be delivering with the feel that you need to deliver like in the “pre-motor cortex series” which is mucho money!!

I noticed when I practiced yesterday that when I was making solid contact my ball flight was lower then what I expected. The area I practice at allows me only to use my wedges. I got more distance but my ball flight was lower

Not a problem! When the time comes when you get back outside or into a higher area like a dome, then you can have fun with higher throws! See “matching task to golf shots” for high and low shots as well as “club speed” video which is a really cool throwing video and I highly recommend it if you can get into a space to do throws like that! Be safe! 😀👍

  • From Alexandre RENAUD on Throwing the Club

Hello Shawn and greetings from France (you’ll forgive my bad English then)
I’ve been playing golf for a year now and I’ve improved a lot thanks to your videos and your method. In fact, I started golfing with a lot of arm manipulation, relying on my “strength” to throw the ball far, which causes huge hooks. I worked on it, although it’s hard to fight bad habits, and I managed to almost eliminate that tendency… but now I’ve inherited a new one: slicing. This is especially the case with 6 and 5 irons, and paradoxically less the case with hybrids and the driver…
So I try to follow your advice. I closed the face (45deg), I worked on my grip and my alignment, I try to launch the club as you teach us, I watched all the ‘fundamental’ videos but still… I feel like it’s getting worse…
Do you have any video dedicated to correcting the slice or any tips to help me overcome this problem? When it goes “straight” I have good distance and control. It’s very frustrating ^^

Sounds to me like you are shanking the ball and not slicing it as this issue does not make sense; shanking is when you strike the ball in the neck of the club and the ball shoots off to the right. This means you are releasing at the ball and or are too close to it or losing balance forward into it. See the “football drill series” and this video here I just uploaded on youtube that we will be making a nice series on premium with! https://youtu.be/apXe9yfe6Q4

Shawn, after this drill I can feel the fluidity of the complete swing, both draw and fade. For me it reinforces all the concepts of effortless swing and it goes “out there”.

  • From Tom Rodgers on LEAD HAND RELEASE DRILL ASSURANCES

This looks like a fabulous drill. It is so hard for amateurs to know how to let the club release naturally. I have always wanted to steer it through the bottom of the swing. Will be trying this out this week.

  • From [email protected] on LEAD HAND RELEASE DRILL ASSURANCES

Wow…never realized how disconnected I was getting on the follow through. Could be why I never felt like my swing was finished…however this may have revealed another clue to a separate problem.
When I do the drill then go back to both hands on the club with the same feel, I get an irritation at the nail bed of my thumb that is covered up. It feels like the skin is pulling away from the nail bed. Is that a clue that I have a grip problem?
I had that problem a couple years ago and it went away, but this seems to have restarted the issue. Any suggestions?

    Go to comment
    • From Shawn Clement on LEAD HAND RELEASE DRILL ASSURANCES

Yes, definitely an issue! See the original Grip video at the bottom of the list of videos by date. The thumb must allow for a full hinge without feeling a buckle in it and if your thumb is too much on the “short side” you will feel that skin get pried off the nail!

    • From [email protected] on LEAD HAND RELEASE DRILL ASSURANCES

OK… quite a revelation, so my thumb was not really buckled as much as I was getting a tiny bit of slippage down the club on my trail hand as I came through then the prying happened on the rehinge. I found if I really concentrate on resting the club on the thumb/ trigger finger pad on both the back swing and follow through it lessened the effect. I also had to really feel the throw with less effort.
Does this make sense? If so, I guess I’m going to have to practice this until it feels normal because I find looking for that resting feeling in my backswing/rehinge takes me away from task focus…unless in your wisdom you have a better idea? Thanks, Tom

    • From Shawn Clement on LEAD HAND RELEASE DRILL ASSURANCES

No, this is good! Once you get past this and feel that it will stop injuring your thumb, then it’s full on task focus once again. You are still on task now but being aware that you can accomplish without injury; so very important!

    Great video,

Trail arm and leading with the elbow. Not something that I consciously think about.

Question 1: let it happen naturally or consciously create?

I see you do this a lot in your practice swings (Shawn’s favourite drill). I believe this is shallowing the swing path and really promotes a in out in path. Good for the draw.

‘Question 2: on the back swing does one need to take it further behind to create room for the in to out path?

    • From Shawn Clement on NEW TRAIL HAND RELEASE

Hey Bruce! You simply want to stay with the a task to get you through the ball; like throwing the club (see the throwing series-especially the football throw where you need space for the trail elbow) so yes, conscious at first the then because this is a self preserving human thing to do, it will quickly become unconscious.
2-farther behind is a big no-no!! See “how to match backswing to ball direction” video for that and “draw fine tuning” and “backswing levitation” and “using the weight in your swing-axe drill with Savy” and finally “kinetic chain facilitation series”

Awesome stuff as usual. It’s a complete reprogramming for me and a difficult task at best. Messing around with my “Swing Impact” I realize how terrible my release is. How to I get my swing to produce my click in front of me rather than behind?

Hey Doug! This is a job for the throwing the club task!! See the “throwing series” and the “snap release polish” video to go along with it; you will be throwing the club away from yourself into the direction you want to start the ball and when you don’t let go, the weight of the club will snap the trail hand over the lead hand and back around your neck and head which leads to a big helicopter finish for me (and Bubba, Arnold Palmer, Bernhard Langer and many more!)

Wow! Such a great addendum to prior videos and can’t wait for the upcoming release series. As a backhander, I have the extension of the lead arm also and this updated drill with my trail arm under helps me really feel the lead elbow kicking down and under instead of away.

Hi Shawn … I have had similar issues as Mu. I started going across the line and I get more club head speed and seem to get more body rotation as well. I”ve gained a good 10 mph. I have been studying Long Drivers and incorporated some aspects of their swings to get longer. What about these guys ?

Finding it very difficult to throw the club from a more upright swing(higher hands) as opposed to my old flat around the body swing. Is it because I’m rushing the downswing not letting my arms fall toward the target?
