Hi Shawn,
How does one line up if we are binocular creatures? If I use the line on the ball it obviously feels like it’s aiming very left but is correct. Perpetual motion in that direction then feels weird. If I don’t use the line on the ball then I’m going to be aiming incorrectly because of the way our vision works.
What do you do?
Also, if I hang my putter straight down (relaxed wrist hinge) then the heel is higher and off the ground a lot more than the toe?
Finally, if I don’t forward press a bit then there seems to be too much loft and the ball goes a bit left often?
Thanks,
Rob.
hi shawn, i like the method of your uncontrolled putterswing. difficult is however how to start. I do it normally visualising or remembering of the pre swing you make. Read in the lines above that you did the ‘crenshaw’ method but that you changed. Can you tell me how you start the putterswing. Second question but connected to this one is in which degree are your shoulders as the motor involved.?
Ok, good question.
1-the last thing in your mind you see when looking at the hole is the moving picture of a ball rolling into the hole from about 3 feet out at the speed you are looking for it to enter
2-you would then be bringing the eyes back to the ball and then react to what you saw by LETTING THE WEIGHT of the arms and putter as a unit roll the ball into that picture.
Imagine you and I playing soft ball and we are 10 feet apart and I ask you to gently toss the ball underhand to make it land softly into the palm of my hand facing the sky. Now, what did you do to start it?? Notice this is not a question for the conscious mind at all?? You simply reacted to what you saw and used a machine that runs at 40 million bits of info per second and then maybe caught a glimpse with the conscious mind which works at 40 bits per second and one single thing at a time. And shoulders should not be thought of either at all during this process either of course.
I have another putting video coming soon to premium that will elaborate on this; it will be kicking off the off season “state of flow” series which will be some of my most important work yet!!😀👍
thx for your tips concerning my putting. There is something else that happened when exercising this uncontrolled putting stroke. Unconsiously i started putting with little movement out of my knees as i use now with in my swing and chipshots. Since i follow your techniques I am called ‘the dancer’ and it feels fantastic to swing in this rhythmical way. The knees as motor for putting. I found that i started putting with more rhythm and holed more putts. For the longer puts i see you are moving too. What do you think about this knee movement for short putts.?
As long as you don’t think about your knees! You simply allow the legs to do what they want to do while you allow the weight of the arms and putter to roll the ball into the picture you chose. 😀👍
Finally getting that alignment line on my ball to roll end over end and not scramble. Soooooo satisfying! Thanks for the tips, I think that PMD as part of my routine did the trick.
Yes!! When that arm-putter unit is balanced under the shoulder sockets and tracks like a rail, all you need to do is set up to the line you feel the ball needs to be on to roll into the hole at the speed you want it to roll in on, recall the last 4 feet of that roll into the hole and let it swing.
It is like you have already made the putt and are re-living it! 😀👍
Hi Shawn. Revisited the putter series. I am using Odyssey centre shafted putter. Left hand low. Not grounded after Goldilocks. My mind is very much on NOT hitting the ball but using momentum/weight of APU.
I’m wondering about contact.
Should the putter head be flowing up at contact, be going parallel to the ground or (not likely) contacting down to the ball?
Should the back of the ball be at the sternal notch ( level contact starting to rise) or the front of the ball (feels like hitting down too much)?
My mind is very much on NOT hitting the ball. Thanks. J.
Good Stuff Jeremy!
Impact as the putter is parallel to ground; not going up or down; ball forward of an APU hanging from shoulder sockets with solid grip just slightly above grass by a mm or 2. This way, if you prefer to place a bit more weight on the front foot, the ball position with adjust naturally for that.
Shawn
Daar Shawn, I am using a thick grip in my putter, do you have tips in the grip ? I am struggling with my putting to get it better. Thanks in advance Regards Martijn
Hi Martijn!
Get a grip that has a counter weight in it; the “Forward grip” I recommend now has a counter balance version that comes with it; I am testing it right now and it is quite good!
Superstroke makes one too; get something in the 40 gram range; it makes a nice difference in the way the stroke comes through-feels more true. Shawn
Thanks we will give it a trie, I have been in contact with forward and mentioned your name. No local representatives yet in The Netherlands but I can order online. I will let you know how it works!
Dear Shawn,
I received the puttergrip from Forward, using it now for almost 2 weeks. Although I still need to get used to it my putting is getting better and better. Thanks for the great tip!
Good stuff! Keep seeing the way you want the ball to roll in; practice seeing the ball roll in at the speed it needs to for the putt at hand. You will gradually make more!
Shawn
