Hey Shawn!
I’m relatively new to golf and am learning so much from your videos! I had a question regarding my lead arm (left arm). How long does it normally stay straight on the follow through? My friend who is a very low handicap says that it should remain almost straight until its parallel to the ground. However, your kinetic chain videos don’t appear to show it held straight that long. I could be mistaken though. Obviously I want to avoid the chicken wing though. Any guidance?
Oh man, you will hear all the colours of the rainbow when it comes to swing positions and body part manipulations, dos and don’ts, make sures, etc.
This is why you need a task! See “task trumps everything” and “top 3 tasks” and really get good at delivering through with your task.
When you are able to plug in your task to your golf shots both mentally and physically, you will have better width naturally without thinking about it. Right now, you are struggling with it because you are so focused on not missing the ball and when you send your swing to the ball, there is no follow through because for the brain, the ball is the end.
Thanks for the reply! I’ll be sure to check out those videos. Your response also gave me an “Aha” moment. In my mind, my task is finished after contact with the ball… Thanks for your great teaching.
Hi Shawn,
I seem to be losing consistency when I focus on “squatting” before the downswing. I believe my body ends up at different heights and there seems to be increased strain on my knees when turning. My task is mainly cutting the grass and throwing the club. Is there a particular task I should use instead for this?
Thanks!
Hey Calvin!
The squat is a reaction to you looking to throw the club out in the direction you want to start the ball; this way, the change in level is done according to the proper coordinates! You are not EVER squatting to hit the ball!!
So, practice throwing the club in the direction you want to start the ball and allow that focus to squat you and feel what kind of squat would allow you to throw out there better with no strain or struggle.
I see you have your index finger , as a hook on the trail hand grip and separated. Why? Are you trying to grip, hold onto club with the index finger. Are you using any type of pinching with trail index finger and thumb. I would think pressure would allow the club face to shut more at impact!
This index does not hold the club and neither does the thumb; every finger has a very distinct purpose in the grip and we explain in detail throughout all of our grip videos. See the grip video in the beginner series, then in the Wisdom in Golf 1.0 series and then the updated grip video in the chronological list on premium. SUPER IMPORTANT-and that is why we produce so much on the grip! 😀👍
I don’t see why you are separating that index finger on purpose from the 3 fingers that hold the club. Why not keep the puzzle together ? I did not see you intentionally mention you want the index finger separated
You saw the grip videos? We talk about the “trigger finger” and how it hooks onto the club…see my oldie but goodie video on youtube called “knife the grip shawn clement” and you will understand better. This is not like baseball, the index has a very specific purpose. See also John Daly’s Grip for an extreme version of it; what I am showing you is very much a lost art on many players today. However, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Jack and Tiger all use this index the way I show you.
I think the lightbulb went on here! As someone who tends to overswing (past parallel even with short irons!) and high strain, the best I am usually able to feel my kinetic chain is an abrupt firing of my obliques but NOT from the ground up and legs below them. Less floating and more staying bolted and centered, correct?
Very much so; you are onto something here!👍😀
Shawn
You finish your swing high almost over your head; like Arnold Palmer, versus over your left shoulder.
Is that something we should strive for to be better ball strikers.
Depends on your dominant side! My right side is dominant and on my left handed swing, I finish with the club across my back;
It is just the body’s way to dissipate the excess; just keep releasing out to the target and see what you like best as a finish! The last 2 videos in premium have some great info on this!
