Hi Shawn, is there any reason why you switched to the interlocking grip? I have used the overlapping grip since I started playing golf more than 40 years ago. After watched your grip update video, I tried the interlocking grip for a few days. However, some reason, my trail hand (right hand) little finger hurts when I hit balls with the interlocking grip. I have a small hand and always am having hard time to release a club. I have not tried the ten-finger grip yet. Do you think the ten-finer grip might improve the clubhead speed and the release of a club for a senior golfer? My driver clubhead speed is about 84 mph.

Hey Shawn! Quick question – in this slow-motion video with the hammer, the release is happening WAY past the door frame. This confuses me, as my (fledgling) understanding of the release is that it’s supposed to happen at impact. Could you please clarify? Thank you!

Hey Steve! This is what the vast majority of golfers think; and this is why I constantly see my students gain that magic 30 yards more with each club because if the ball is your target, you are LOST!! You want to collect the ball from where it lies and release it to the direction you want it to go. Watch my favourite series called “throwing series” and then see “predict contact” and the “goldie locks series” and film yourself throwing the club to a specific target and watch how glorious your swing’s lag looks when you do! Then see “lead hand release”, “trail hand release”, “release fine tuning” and “snap release polish videos.
      enjoy!

Hi Shawn – thanks as always for the super fast response!

      OK, woah…..!

      Hold Up!!

Are you suggesting that a golf shot is just like a hockey shot, where you’re not really hitting the ball at all, but rather catching it on the club face and flinging it?!?

I’ve heard you say ‘collect the ball and release it to the target’ a million times in your videos, but I honestly didn’t think you meant that literally.

If so, I don’t really understand how that happens. It would seem that as you’re cutting through the dandelion stem, and making contact with and compressing the ball, that the ball is just going to ricochet immediately off the club face. Right? Isn’t that what ‘hitting down on the ball’ means? And letting the club face do the work?

My recent practice, and indeed, my ‘revelation’ about the release (which I thought was supposed to be happening at impact, not well afterwards) may be all wrong. Although I’m definitely hitting much better, more consistent shots than ever before.

The reason I was returning to the release videos was because my distances seemed pretty pedestrian, and I wanted to troubleshoot why I wasn’t getting better results distance-wise.

I have this feeling that you’re about to blow my mind here….

The ball stays on the face as it compresses, nice flat spot bigger than a quarter; then rides on the club face for an inch and then Releases from the face; it is absolutely a collect and release action!

      Ok, wow.

I’m heading to the range to try this today.

I’m concerned that the timing on this seems almost impossible to achieve, and the faster the club speed, even harder to do.

I have been working on what I thought I was supposed to do with the ‘release’ at impact, and that was hard enough to do consistently timing-wise. Any advice on how to approach timing the release after the ball has been collected? Is there a recommendation on which club to use to begin to master this?

      Thanks, Shawn!

Steve; get out of conscious mind stuff; YOU SIMPLY CANNOT CONTROL THE SWING THAT WAY. See “throwing the club” and the “throwing series” and realize that the brain will know when to LET GO when you focus on throwing the club TOWARDS A SPECIFIC TARGET. So when you throw the club and you don’t let go, the weight of the club will RELEASE YOU at that time. NOT YOUR JOB!!😎

Well, no 30 yard gain. Maybe a 3-yard gain, sometimes?

I’m revisiting the body turn issue, so maybe I’m trying too many new things at once.

Each swing feels so rushed now with the full body turn both ways. I don’t feel like I got a single good ‘release’ in like 45 mins of trying with various clubs.

      These steps backwards are frustrating!

Hey Shawn – yes, I bought some cheap used clubs, and of course my first few throws went waaaaaay left… Like Mu said “How is this happening?”

I think I’ve now got the feeling of how to actually throw correctly.

I watched more video of my current ‘swing’ and it’s clear to me that I’m a classic early extender. What is your recommendation for how to eliminate this awful habit? FYI, on my perpetual motion swings, it appears that I’m not goat humping as much as when I’m actually hitting a ball.

I think my issue is my legs (specifically my right leg?) are not getting the ground in any sort of a squatting motion. I’ve been struggling with getting a good body turn / rotation on my backswing due to my osteoarthritis in my left knee, but if I focus on ‘widening’ things on my backswing, I think I’m getting adequate rotation (or as much as I can physically do). But as before, when I begin the downswing to throw the club, if I stay back and have my right leg go get the ground, I have a hard time not hitting the ground behind the ball.

I’m sure I’m doing something simple incorrectly.

No, the indoor range I visited here in MN wasn’t a place where that can happen…

Hi Shawn – Is there a good way to confirm the release is happening at the right point? I’ve been trying to hear the “swoosh” sound of my swing at impact and after impact, but definitely not before. What do you think of this?

    • From Shawn Clement on LEVERAGE IN RELEASE - OFF SEASON TRAINING (4)

This is where the club throwing comes in big time; you want to practice throwing clubs in the direction of the target through an intermediate point; then when you throw in that direction through the IP and don’t let go, the weight of the club will release you at the right time and place for the flight plan you chose. See “the goldie locks series” for the prediction of where to place the ball so it’s in the way of this action.

Shawn – I’m not clear on the door frame example. I see where you put the ball behind the hammer and next to the hammer but why call it a door frame? Does the analogy simply mean a solid object?

  • From Doug Wetzel on SLOW MOTION- RELEASE BOTH HANDS WITH CLUB

Allowing the release is such a different feeling than producing a release. Short shots are much easier, trying to ramp up the speed without adding force I find difficult. Pumping legs I know is the key but getting there is tough. My hands roll over much earlier on both the backswing and forward swing.

The key is to stay with a task that will do that for you; see “turbo charge lead hand release” and “turbo charge trail hand release” videos and feel that you are throwing with leg engagement. See also “kinetic chain facilitation series”
      keep on it Doug! 👍😀

  • From [email protected] on USING WEIGHT OF KETTLE BELL THROUGH DOOR

Shawn, something really clicked on this video for me. I know we’ve talked about the door frame a ton before, but as I now focussed on swinging square into the doorframe, like driving a nail straight in with my hammer, I got amazing results. It helped me get my hands all the way through before the club release into the door frame. I shot 43 on the front (with still some erroneous shots), but shot 37 on the back. If I can keep this up, I should be able to consistently score under 80. Thanks!

Hey mate, loving your advice all the way from down in Australia, thank you for your help! Any thoughts on avoiding lateral movement on the take away? I’m a 5 marker and don’t always manage to keep my eye on my ‘blade of grass’ back and through when I make a swing. All the best, Neil

Hey Neil! Best feel for staying centred is “feet together drill” and “feet together back to feet apart” as well as “weight shift with Savy” and the “walking drill”; then see “kinetic chain facilitation series” and #6 is my favourite there!

  • From Anthony Crescenti on Garage Door Drill

Shawn, this drill has really opened the floodgates for me in terms of effortless speed. As I take a look at my swing down the line, it appears as though I am getting a bit across the line at the top. I am not super concerned because I am able to still stay with my target and send it out to the right of my intermediate point, but I don’t want to engrain this habit if it is something that can causes issues down the road. It seems that if I keep my ACU more in front of my body at the top my wrist hinge causes the club to go slightly across. Any issues with this feel if I can still create my desired shot shape to the target?

  • From Brian O'Hara on KINETIC CHAIN FACILITATION #6 SENDING DIVOTS!

Hi Shawn, refreshing my divot skills on range with spring golf. I am confused by the fact that the deepest part of the divot is forward of the bottom of the swing which is under that sternal notch. I can’t wrap my head around this and feel like I am lunging a bit forward to try to get that nice divot ahead of the ball like you do. Any thoughts, drills (on grass or mat) to help?
    Thanks

Hey Brian! Did you notice the drone view with the iron? Amazing how it takes the grass from centre of stance and then cuts forward into the trees? We are built this way. So if the ball position is forward of centre, you will have to lunge forward for it! Please see “goldie locks series” and “predict contact” videos as well as the “unstoppable momentum” and the latest “path blur low point” video.
