    Shawn, I used the old Leadbetter’s book admonishment of MOVE THE BELLY BUTTON FIRST, This takeaway move allowed me to hit laser irons, all pretty much the same height, penetrating and very consistent. I also float-loaded the takeaway. However, I couldn’t hit the driver very far. So eventually, I gave it up and went back to the arms swing I grew up with. In watching this video, along with the catapult videos in your really excellent Consistency Series, I realize I was only swinging halfway in the belly button method, just then dropping my arms without turning through to the finish. Now in my 70’s, I’m going to utilize the same belly-button takeaway, which turning my butt away, and turning through to the finish. I am concerned about losing power. Any suggestions?

      Hey Gene! To complete the backswing, please see “lead hand release in the backswing” and the latest “super slow-super relaxed-super wide backswing” series and for the follow through, see “kinetic chain facilitation series” and “task update” and “task 2.0 series.

      the full backswing facilitates the activation of the kinetic chain in the downswing and when this happens, hang on to your hat! 😝

    Hi Coach,

    The season has been fantastic! All facets of my game have been great. I ‘lost’ my driver for about six weeks. I remembered this drill and started inserting it into my routine at the range and the last three weeks have been the best driving weeks of year. I even ‘acid’ test when I’m playing a round. I’ve been doing the drill with just the tees in my backyard 2-3 times a week. Can’t thank you enough!

    Hi Shawn just watched your latest video on YouTube the grip with driver i have the very strong grip my bad shot is a pull hook i normally aim the right of fairway but the ball starts down the middle and draws hard left its not just with the driver often do it with all clubs do you think it might be more an over the top swing cheers Steve

      What you need to work on with the driver is the fade; aim left centre of fairway and send the tip of the tee in that direction and match the backswing to ball direction. See “how to match backswing to ball direction” and “diagonal stance series fade driver”

    I had to sit and think about the grip for a bit as I was having issues. I watched the videos a few times and wasn’t clicking until it hit me. The grip is closer to a modern baseball bat grip where you line up the “door knocker” knuckles and you can point the index fingers in the same direction. When I played baseball when I was younger I would grip the bat and “line up the flats.” This puts the right (trail) hand too far under the club and it releases too much. Took me a minute but I got it figured out. The kitchen video is what helped seal the deal.

    just confirmation my side tilt vision. two ways I see to do the side tilt one is with shoulders level if you lower the right arm then you get the side tilt the other way is the feeling of the right hip is slightly open and your weight feels like its towards the left leg it appears to me the first version just side tilt the upper body where the latter actually tilts the whole spine. I believe when I watch you do your tilt you are tilting the whole spine rather than just tilting your side. Am I seeing this correctly

      Hey Roger! Yes, you bet! We call this the “braced tilt” and it starts with the understanding of how the weight shifts from the back leg to the front leg at the top of the transition; see “braced tilt” then “weight shift with Savy” and then see “the walking drill” and “kinetic chain facilitation series” where in #6 when we walk and send divots into the trees, as soon as the lead leg grabs the ground, you will see the tilt of the address position!

      Hey Jeff! Absolutely! What you should do is start seeing me 1-1 either once per week or a couple time per month using facetime or skype; all we need is a place to swing or hit shots with a good internet connection. You get a simple tripod with a phone clip and you can move the phone around from face on or down the line; just like I was there! See either the “eagle plus” package or the eagle one or the eagle 2; you get to send me texts direct to show me progress of the swing or any questions you may have between sessions as well; this is better than in person!

    Thank you for these videos….I was wondering how specific/general we should be about targets and direction. I recall you used to look at clouds or tree lines to add height for creating your shot picture. That is a distant target but you use an intermediate target for direction to get you started.
    I find it easier to pick a specific target in the distance like the top of a tree or a building feature like a window for my direction during the swing. I use the intermediate target to get set up and test if my blur is going in the right direction then focus on the distant object as I perform my task. So can you help clarify how you do direction whether it is better to use distant specific targets or nearby intermediate to give you start direction? Thanks again for this series. Tom

      Hey Tom! Your comment explains very nicely how good a grasp you already have with targeting. Yes, you first need a flight plan and then an intermediate point to set up into the flight plan and once the set up fits and you feel comfortable, the key is to focus on what will get you to feel that amazing free wheeling swing way through and out into that picture. This needs to originate from your state of mind well before the shot ever takes place. This is where I believe we are blazing a trail with “pre-motor cortex series” and “flow state series” and we are working on making the process “meditative” and or “hypnotic” to really connect you to your shots. You are on the right track! Keep us posted as to what you find out as to what works best for you in this matter!

      Thanks Shawn -I’ll keep using that preshot process…the last part for me is keeping my mind on the target…not the ball! Right now the only other thing I am trying to feel as part of my preshot is that there is enough room for my right arm to fall under me. I am using the garage door feel to keep my hands from wandering too far around me and the football drill to get clearance. I kind of go through a checklist then if I feel comfortable that those are good, it gives me a better chance to swing with less strain. Keep up the good work enjoying the journey with you.

    hey Shawn, i’ve been coming in too hard into the ground even when thinking about cutting a stem. Trying to stay on task but still mostly seem to come down hard toward the ball. Any additional advice to avoid this bad habit.

      Yes! Go to the “goldie locks series” and “predict contact” video and make the prediction that if you throw the club in the direction you want to start the ball that you are only going to GRAZE THE GRASS which will make it feel like you are going to hit the ball thin. See what happens! Many of my students need to stay there for a while or even permanently to flush the ball and about 40% of tour players always hover the club at address, Jack Nicklaus always does this.
