Hi Shawn like everyone I am trying to get more out of the driver. On the monitor I am hitting 98 to 102 mph, but my distances maxes out at about 220. Thoughts on videos I should look at to improve efficiency.? Thank you
Numbers on angle of attack should be 5 degrees up, a couple degrees from the inside and 1 degree of so closed; spin should be below 2200 RPM; if you are getting something similar to that right now, then I recommend you get fit for a new driver as it is not you!
Hi Shawn,
Great series! I am really concentrating on releasing the club with a snap in the direction of my target. I am really able to draw and fade Irons (easier with short through mid Irons) and great impact with Hybrids and 3 Wood although less movement right and left. But I just can’t seem to stop slicing or pulling Driver. I use a very strong grip, knife the grip, I’m concentrating on releasing to the taerget feeling the “snap” but they still fly low left or high slicing right. Any further recommendations?
I see this all the time! See “driver for accuracy video” and hone your skills using the ground as your training aid; many pros on tour use the short tee to stabilize the club face through using the sole of the club to the ground. Then as you get good with this, start raising the tee slightly, and see how you do! Sounds like the ball position is too far forward and you are lunging to get after it…
Shawn, I’m with you on the unstoppable momentum. However, I find it impossible to consistently use my body to make this happen. I know I want to swing freely through the ball and use my momentum, but no matter how hard I try, I just cannot turn my arms off enough to let it happen. They invariable add input and sabotage the entire kinetic chain. I’ve struggling with this for years. I’m not thinking use arms, it just happens. On the rare occasion I can let it freely flow the results are great. I’ve tried cutting the grass, going to a full finish, etc. They work for a little while until my brain figures out how to put back in arm input. I’m hopping you have some Jedi mind tricks to stop this vicious cycle. Paul
Yes, sounds like you are trail arm dominant; like my right handed swing; see the “stop pushing with right hand” video with the use of the double overlapping grip like Jim Furyk!
Great video Shawn! I am reaching new highs every week, year 2 with WIG is looking even more promising than year one. Essentially dual pendulum chaos theory is why we can’t “make sure” in the golf swing huh?
Question, as a right eye dominant golfer when i try and tilt my head address like yours i sort of lose sight of the ball. Any thoughts on this? Is there a better setup for a right eye dominant, right handed golfer?
Grab an eye patch from Amazon! You’ll be the pirate golfer!
As an Optometrist binocular vision for R dominant eyes can make you line up a little right of target.
Try holding a club in the air and cover your right eye with the palm of your hand and line up.
.
Swap hands and cover your left eye. See if there’s a difference?
If I ever get this release to the target thing going, I want a certificate…. something like a 2 year diploma in WIG and overcoming conventional golf teaching. And a bag tag… can I please get a bag tag…..
Shawn I have watched u, sav, and mo, swing the driver numerous times left handed on your utube video and I have noticed that u tell us to see the blur which I now see but u suggest allowing the club to swing freely where it wants to go then setting up there. However I have a couple questions the first being we have all been taught to setup about a fist and thumb away from our body to address the ball with the club. Yet u suggest letting a practice swing determine where we need to be as u say the arms will get pulled out further from our body on driver? So I am confused on where I start behind the ball and where my hands should be as we were also taught to taught the back elbow?
Hi Clarence! Fist and thumb drill is one of the most ridiculous things that has been taught out here in this game; it has single handedly held back golfers from enjoying their long irons and woods and driver in the worst way. Sorry you had to go through that and just erase anything that resembles this. See “distance to ball” and the “goldilocks series” has a video completely dedicated to distance to ball with all clubs as well as the “throwing series” which deals with throwing clubs of all different lengths. Enjoy your new freedom!
This video clearly explains how the rotation of the left hip pivoting backward pulls the hands and butt of the club down and past the ball first which is then second followed by the momentum of the kinetic chain causing “ball first” contact/gathering the ball and creating divot/grass clippings past the ball for solid contact and ball compression. The feet together drill really helps get the feel for this sequence in the downswing and the importance of the left hip pivoting back to improve the downswing sequencing and to create “solid ball first ” contact.I just returned from the range and tried this with much improved ball striking and much better consistency with my ball contact. This is the first time anyone has explained this clearly the proper downswing sequence and how to get proper ball first contact. This video is now one of my favorites on the Premium channel. Thanks
I did this today near a penalty area while waiting on a group. I finally understand full kinetic engagement. I went in to hit absolutely towering accurate iron shots the rest of the day.
Shawn! Sorry, lot of comments lately but the brain is connecting a ton of dots in year 2!
You said something in this video when you were demonstrating pendulum 2 (hands stay between the legs)
I’m doing PMD in my backyard right now and I’m focusing on pendulum 2 happening just past my trail thigh in the backswing and just past my lead thigh in the downswing.
It feels an awful lot like sword drill where I get the whoosh at 4 and 8 o clock.
Over simplification:
Pendulum 1 gets the machine going back to load. Pendulum 2 loads past trail thigh
Transition is allowing the momentum of pendulum 2 to fully gather and set to perform its task.
Pendulum 1 then initiates the downswing, just like the back swing (kinetic chain starts both pendulums) and then as the hands get past the lead thigh pendulum 2 unloads to perform the task
Hi Shawn,
Thank you for your hard work!
Tell me if I understand this correctly:
For the draw, you line up an IP a foot in front of the ball that would be straight at the target. Then when you are set to hit the ball, you are swinging out to the right edge of that IP which would make the swing direction appear 30 or so yards right of the target (from side vision)?
That is why you said you feel like you’re swinging to the right side of the bunker which is 30 or 40 yards right of the target from the side on view or the golfers view?
Exactly John! As you evolve with this, you start to get the gist of it and really enjoy trusting the arc-blur of the swing and simply let momentum track it in the direction you are set up in. Never stop taking intermediate points and never take alignment for granted as the side vision will get you faster than you can say double bogey! 😜😀
Hi Shawn and Sav, I joined about a month ago. I am a 13 hc and am 72 years old. I’m trying to gain distance and consistency (like everyone else.lol). I have watched this video a few times. what I like is how the axe drill helps in weight shift, especially in the back swing; getting to a full bs position; using the legs in the entire swing (as we get older, we tend to forget about the legs); and getting the arms in a perfect position at the top.
My question is, you talk to Sav about angle of attack in terms of degrees. What is the the angle you are trying to achieve, and how do you get there? I believe you talked to her about focusing on the target, throwing the clippings at the target, rather than focusing on the ball.
Thanks for your unique insights into the game and swing. Once the snow melts, I’ll send you a video of my swing. Looking forward to a great year on the links!
Hi Greg! Glad you are enjoying your experience! Yes, if you look at the “throwing series” and you realize that when you throw the club in the direction you want to start the ball, the tilt in the structure accommodates the lag in the “loaded arm club unit” (see “grip and arm swing”) and the lag ensures the downward angle of attack on the irons and fairway woods. The length of the shaft ensures the proper amount of angle of attack. Wedges are 5 degrees down, 7 iron is 2 to 4 degrees down depending on the shot, mid and long irons are 0 to 2 degrees down and hybrids and fairway woods are +2 to -1 degrees down.
our latest 2 pendulums of the human machine series (first one posted last week) will be awesome for you to sink your teeth into!
