With regards to aligning my sternal notch with the bottom of the swing arch; I play right handed. On Iron shot, Hybrids, and Fairway Woods, Should I feel that my Sternal notch is aligned slightly forward of the ball. With regards to the Driver, Should I feel that my Sternal notch is aligned slightly behind the ball?
You have the right idea for sure! Now you need to feel that in your prediction and not “make sure” of trying to keep the body part of the sternal notch in whatever you think it’s position is; very tough!

This is my top “favourite” video. Chipping is also my no 1 shot and the way I always start my warm up prior to a round. Yet I still have a question…..
Sometimes I feel that my body controls the movement and that my upper arms are connected to my chest…going along for the ride. Sometimes I feel that my arms swing free and the body follows…..getting out of the way, back and forward.
I would like to focus on just one of these “feelings” and methods and I would appreciate your advice.

Get a sledge hammer, 4 to 6 pounds; and swing it like a putter with perpetual motion; back and through without stopping for around 12 cycles without stopping after each swing; and then go longer and longer on the swing until it feels like a long chip and feel how the hammer just tracks in front of you missing your toes by inches and feel how the body turns and returns out of the way to allow the arms to swing and not collide with the upper rib cage and get diverted off line!
I liked the way you allowed Mu to figure out the correct setup to get through both tees. The explanation and demonstration helped with the same drill. When I started the drill I was just like missing the second tee.
What do I get for my premium (Eagle) membership? When I log in it appears that I am getting the same material as those who paid much less. Perhaps I am not accessing the correct site.
Is there any change to weight distribution relating to balance? A normal shot it’s like 60/40% toward the front leg right? Is that the same on an uphill lie?
No; this is the thing; you want to set up to match the task; and to stay with the swing uphill, you cannot do the same weight distribution as on a flat lie at all; we want to cut grass uphill, downhill or along the “level hill” in the direction you want to start the ball.
Shawn, ball and feet are on the same plane on the platform. In real life, this might not always be the case. What if (and the possibilities are multiples) ball and feet are not leveled but each on a different plane. How do we address those situations?
Sometimes, the lie does not fit the direction of the target and that is when you need to change options!
We must feel like the flight plan fits the lie and situation; so instead of a 7 iron to the pin, you may need to hit a 9 iron to the front right or left of the green where you have a chance to get up and down! If the set up does not fit the target, how in the world are you going to be able to make a good swing?
You will see a little cog wheel on the bottom right of the screen, reduce the resolution to 540p or 360p; the internet has been very unpredictable since we have been confined; have a great day as well!
The best videos to remedy this right away are the “football drill series” and the “goldie locks series” where the one from distance to ball will apply; but do football drill series first.
Thank you Shawn for the video on pushing with the trail hand. I have the tendency to push with my dominant (Right) hand . I am sure that is the reason, I haven’t ever been able to feel the release. Can’t wait to get on the range and course to try the correct way.
There’s so many good nuggets here Shawn. The beginning part about clearing the body so the arms don’t fold when chipping has been so helpful for my chipping and my full swing. I also have the problem of feeling the weight of the ACU and using my legs to clear and start the backswing when at address.
Best one for this is the axe drill! See the latest one I did with Savy called “using the weight in the swing-axe drill with Savy” which is near the top of the chronological list of videos. “Anti-Manipulation” is also another nice one! Shawn
I know the ball is back in your stance. It looks like you are very open in stance as if you are aiming very left. Are these the same? And, is it only optics? At 2:17 and 8:47, it looks like you are aligned for at least 8-10 feet left.
And, at 2:57 the ball appears to take off right of club swing arc even though you aim left edge of intermediate point.
Yes, the flop shot is from the fade family and therefore you aim left of the target and swing left of the target (which don’t forget, is an arc of swing flowing to the left) and the ball position is slightly forward of center.
Make sense now?
Kind of. I’ll hit the range tomorrow. Is the ball to fade right, given such a short distance? Or is it supposed to go directly right from the club. Like 10% fade?
See for yourself how much; depends on loft of club and bounce; use a little experimentation to find the one that works best; mine comes out pretty close to spot on my alignment!
Shawn, here is a question about the sternal notch position at setup for irons. At setup, where should my sternal notch be positioned? When I tilt my body at setup (get behind the ball), my sternal notch ends up behind the ball so I have to slide forward during the swing to reposition the notch in front of the ball to keep from hiring it fat. This doesn’t seem right since we are trying to keep the sternal notch centered and to rotate around it. Should the notch be positioned at or in front of the ball after tilting?
Hey Barry! Great question! The best way is to make a prediction based on your action release in the direction you want the ball to go. So get the feel of the release first; see “lead hand release” “trail hand release” and “release fine tuning” videos and then see “predict contact” and the ball position video in the “goldie locks series”
Way better to do it instinctively than to try and position the darn thing. But your gut is telling you the right thing!
