None at all! It is the engagement of the kinetic chain that is the most important! See “how to use the weight in the swing-axe drill with Savy” and the “kinetic chain series” followed by “throw the club” and “the throwing series”
That slow backswing of yours has a great home here!! 😀👍
Thanks for the reply. I apologise for not noticing till now. Watched the videos you suggested and incorporated it, not massively changed but the elbow isn’t welded into my side anymore, the driver is closer than the wedge which I presume is to do with the driver being on a flatter plane than the wedge. Saying that my carry distance has increased so all good. Thanks
my homecourse is very small and has a lot of tight lies (Austrian Mountains). It happens very often, that the ball is in den semi rough very close to the green and i have the feeling, that i need the most of the weight/energy to get through the semi rough.
In this situation it happens a lot, that my club gets “stuck” in the rough because i don’t want to send the ball to the other end of the green or even further. Then happens everything from yips….
What should i do?
This is where you need to learn the “OPEN FACED CHIP SHOT”
You need a good “LOB WEDGE” with 60 degrees of loft and maximum 8 degrees of bounce and a sole grind that matches the “TS” wedge from Ping or the “C GRIND” sole of Callaway or the “M Grind” of Vokey.
Then see my chipping video on premium, the most complete!
Shawn, this is fascinating to me and I look forward to sending you my first video for you to review. In regards to takeaway matching essentially the shot shape you want to hit helps my brain and bodywork in conjunction tremendously. What I am finding though is when I’m looking to hit a draw and I place ball position a little back center I’m still leaving the ball out to the right even with a take away that matches where I want the ball to fly. Any suggestions on really working to get that nice draw shape?
All you need to do is close the face of the club more! The vast majority of my early students cannot believe how closed the face needs to be and when they see it at address, they think OMG, hook city! Then they whip THROUGH the ball and into the direction they want to start the ball and their jaw drops; “ how come no hook?” Because they are not DYNAMIC in their thinking yet! See the first video in the “consistency series” and do what I do with the club head and also see the latest “historic” grip session we did with Savy and Mu!
Shawn
Ok, great! Thanks for the input, I’ll work on this. And for the fade, I’ve noticed your videos on opening the clubface juts a bit more but grip stays the same, and alignment and swing direction are slight left.
I’d love to come up and take a lesson sometime. I live out in San Diego but grew up in Maine so not that far from you in Canada. I’m home often visiting so I could scoot over to your neighborhood sometime :).
No, you want to have a more open face because we are not loading the arm-club unit like in the full swing! See the original chipping video earlier in the list! Shawn
This is something I have been working on and it has helped me greatly. A big preshot is the PMD, which is helpful. However, my key transition move seems to the short squat (grabbing the ground) at the top and Not allowing the arms to fire (still breaking that habit).. I tried to search on videos about this squat or the up-down movement through the swing, but couldn’t find any. Can you suggest other videos for this?
Hey Shawn. My biggest problem with the grip is that at the top of my backswing, the bottom of my hand (so below my little finger, the part of my hand that is the highest on the club) gets loose and lifts up, and no matter what I do to try keep it tight on the club I cant. I either focus on it too much and then hit a terrible shot because my focus isn’t on the task at hand (cutting grass etc) or, in trying to not let it happen, my hands and arms get too tight and then I cant swing freely. When I look at my glove it is worn way down at that exact point, at the bottom right of my palm. Any tips/advice for how to keep the base on my lead hand on the club?
I have a couple of videos for this on youtube: see “no more collapsing arms shawn clement” and “stop letting go shawn clement” as well as “stop destroying your glove shawn clement”
Let me know what does the trick for you!
Shawn
Hey Shawn, congratulations, you’ve got me to join. So, first question, wrapping the trail hand index finger around the the club. Is there a specific feeling when drawing the club back with this index finger? I have heard several different things regarding the index finger on the trail hand. One is more indirect from Hogan, and it may not be related to the index finger, but Hogan said (paraphrasing – could have this wrong) something along the lines of setting the bow or arrow with the backswing. This would lead me to believe a person would used the tip of the index finger to engage the club during the backswing, is this correct? And the thumbs purposes – I’ve heard that there should be no pressure or engagement with the trail hand thumb. This kind flies in the face on your tangerine feel, correct? Anyway, happy to be aboard.
Hi Shawn, having trouble with flush contact with the ball. Mainly my problem is thinning, topping. I am a 6 handicapper. I feel I have the problem of timing, using my posture through the ball. When I use the child swing analogy I never have the consistency of timing the up/down movement during the strike. Can you point me to the right video. I have seen them all, but maybe you can give me an idea. Thanks
Oh yes!
‘Predict contact” and “goldie locks series” is where to start and confirm the predictions without which, you will continue to have your issues. Then see “pre motor cortex series” and “target confirmation series” for a more in depth dive towards the “flow state of golf” 😀👍
Hi Shawn, my driving not being consistent. My main problem is the push, or push slice. I do not stand open. I feel the problem is either my hands are leading the club face, which means to me, open, or my club face is open when striking the ball. When I close the club face a little at address it seems to help, but your videos do not show a closed driver club face at address. Do you lead with your hands ? Thanks
I just answered that question in the “trail hand release” video and here is the answer: also make sure you see the “throwing series” with driver called hammer throw to have the proper set up.
‘It simply means you still have an open face dynamically. Just had a lesson last night where my student was delivering nice draws with irons and then when the woods came, he was slicing. Because the Centre of Gravity and the Centre of Mass is different, AND THE FACE is round instead of flat, many factors change for the eyes. He was using a much weaker grip and a much more open face than with his irons and when I had his close the face just enough to go with a nice draw, which the GC Quad told us after it was 0.3 degrees closed at impact, he thought it was 30 degrees more closed than his irons.
So, close the face 30 more degrees, deliver your “arc blur” through the tip of tee on the way up and in the direction of the intermediate point and out into the picture AND SEE HOW IT FLIES. Do a serious goldie locks with it and really let it go and see what the shot looks like WHEN YOU STAY ON TASK. Enjoy!“
I’m having the exact issue, I have a natural tendency to draw the ball but with this new swing when I miss it’s a hard push right. Definitely feel my hands in front of the club. I do close the face a touch at address.
I use to do a «throwing the club» session before doing a practice session as a warming up.
I have a question about what the trajectory : when I throw it, it doesn’t go up to the target on a curve. The release of the club is in direction of the target, but downwards, so that it gets to the ground at about 5 to 10 meters from me. I wonder if it could show that there is something that I’m not doing the right way. Maybe not focusing enough to the target ?
Another question : if the throwing of the club is naturally a bit on the left could it be related to a natural fade ball flight ?
See “club speed” video and watch how much fun it is to throw on different heights! 😀👍
Then see “the throwing series” from short stop throwing to javelin and football throwing to hammer throwing!
Excellent video! I loose way to many strokes on the green. Looking forward to changing that. By the way… do you think that Aimpoint is a good idea? Don’t know a lot about it.
I don’t feel the need to use it although many enjoy it! Anything to help you read the greens is very good in my book because that is the most important. There is no need to practice a putting stroke, only to practice rolling the ball into pictures with momentum and not manipulation.
