Great Chipping Lesson. Just completed my session in backyard on Mat and it was great. Added Bonus, was how easy it was to complete the backswing from the chipping swing. Looking forward to a full week of practicing it.
Hey Shawn, this really confirms a BIG aha moment I had in my body this weekend. I’ve been watching your lessons for over a year now. My swing was improving as indicated by my scores. Then at the beginning of this year I started going backwards till last weekend after I came to believe, like Mu in this video, I must be using my arms too much in trying to manipulate my swing without realising it. So I committed to totally trust and go with the weight of my ACU and hand it over to my legs to “turbo charge” the swing. And WOW I equaled my best ever score of 95 (I missed around 5 short putts too, which is usually a strength), and won the comp. Many thanks as always. Lots of love to you and your family.
These AHA moments are so much fun because they solidify the mission and focus. Nothing more exciting to be a “man with a plan” and going for it. 👍🤛🤛🏾👌💪
This is a great lesson. I haven’t played for nine months due to weather and COVID and I made the mistake of taking a few lessons from my new club pro. All static positions! This has got me back, straighter and with more distance with less strain. Many thanks!
You bet! I see this trap so often: You think you are starting to struggle because you are hitting some errant shots (not realizing it was your focus) and you think something is defective. You go to a lesson and yep, confirmed, look at all these defective body parts!! And you chase your tail for a while and start to mentally pant and then wake up (thankfully) and realize you are not defective after all and just needed to re-focus on your simple task and polish the feel of delivering to that task. Keep going and you let ME know if you run into any road blocks in the future! 😀👍
Watching the video part on hitting higher and lower shots…. it appears that the higher shot adjustment is done by moving the ball slightly forward in the stance with slightly more axis tilt. Is that correct?
If you look at my oldest video on grip called “grip and wrist hinge shawn clement” you will see that the proper hinge of the wrist with fists cannot be done with a flat left wrist. When the hands hinge together, they perform nicely.
Also, Every swing has a flavour of it’s own; it is the way the brain learns and there is no way around that; it is our machine. When I set up, with the way I deliver with my anatomy, I feel that if I stay with my task, that the ball will start in the direction I want, will curve the way I want in the air, will get compressed and have a stable pleasing flight. what happens to my body parts during the swing are of no concern to my conscious mind.
This is the real deal folks. Experienced throwing with the legs at Royal Quebec with Shawn and the results were game changing! My ball striking and driving are transformed. Can’t thank you enough Shawn! My playing partners could not believe how far I was driving the ball on Sunday. What a feeling!! 😀 Take care!
When hitting the driver should I be focussing on a blade of grass at the low point of the arc where I start my swing or should it be just behind the ball as with irons?
On the back of the tee! Feeling that the low point is positioned in a way to catch the tip of tee on the way up and in the direction of the intermediate point.
Hi Shawn. Been struggling with consistency. Went through throwing the club drills, but something was missing. Then I watched the catapult video. Wow!
Things that the “catapult” task created in my swing:
more of a hip turn/butt to the target awareness;
a wider, consistent back swing as I allowed my arms to swing freely and away from my body;
an ability to stay behind the ball, without thinking of my head position;
a “ball on a string” feeling (which I understood intellectually, but did not “feel”.)
In short, by “losing control” (i.e. not manipulating) of the club, I let gravity take over. Slowly over the last weeks, I shortened my turn, kept my arms slightly closer to my body and moved my head on top of the ball, as I let my mind default to the ball.
OK, I’m loving the idea of the sledge hammer swinging back and forth and am understanding the concept of having to shift the weight naturally to clear out of the way. Seeing as the club is a much lighter object, is the job here to feel the club head swing back and through to get a real sense of feeling the club head path. I know that the blur of the club head will give you a general path that the the club is traveling but where does the feel and touch come into it? Not trying to over analyze, but just make more sense of this process. By the way Shawn, I’ve had some recent breakthroughs with my swing that I’m looking forward to telling you about next time we speak. Talk soon my man!
Right on Andy; what you are forgetting is the weight of THE ARMS AND CLUB swinging from the shoulder sockets! Just swinging the arms from the shoulders has a solid weight to it!
kinetic chain, beautifully illustrated, like poetry in motion. Thanks Shawn, seeing Mo doing it is a super visual. Now I can focus my practice to further build my myelin.
Good guess! See “purpose of the backswing” and “club speed” videos to start; then apply that to a task which my favourite is “grass whip training” and see what happens after that!
Wish I had sen this early this morning. Was ” guiding ” my chip and especially my pitches. Cost me at LEAST 5 – 7 strokes !! Watched the video and nailed almost ALL of them by using my legs. GREAT JOB !!!
