  • From [email protected] on Rope Drill

I feel like I can use this drill to help improve my backswing footwork. I often find that when I pull the rope back most of my weight is on the back foot, then I have to go get the ground. I feel it should be more like it goes from the back foot to settling to the left and then increasing the pressure in the left(going to get the ground) and then throw to the target. I know not to think about this on the course, just stick with a task, but, it is obvious that I have not mastered this footwork.there was a video of Albert Bell where before he stepped into the pitch he levitated his hands and I could never understand how to do this ,but , it is because my weight is still on my back foot. I would appreciate your thoughts and a possible video update to best downswing weight shift as I think a lot of us struggle with this. Happy Fathers Day, I really appreciate all that you do and you really make a difference in many of our lives, especially in this pandemic

Awesome video on the variety of ball flight in the short game. Good that you repeated the hop stopper and reminded me to add it to practice and soon my game. Cheers Peter

Shawn, can you expand on what the tone of the arms should be and how to keep the y shape of the acu through the swing but still feel the weight? I often get too floppy because it’s easier to feel the weight, but when i firm up the tone I can’t feel the weight as easily and i get too tense.

Just letting the arm-club unit swing back and through without stopping and monitor the tone you need to keep it together while being able to react to the weight of the unit itself. Hard to do when you perform one at a time; but in PMD, much easier. Just continue to do it until you get it. Could be 10 minutes, could be 30 minutes…😀👍

Funny thing…. before I started with WIG, my driver swing was always fade or slice. Since I have be been with WIG, my driver has improved to a nice high draw or dead straight shot, with good distance. This is a welcome improvement. Loving the changes. However, there are a couple holes on the course I play on… that if don’t either fade it or play it short off the tee…you’re in a hazard out of play. Trying to do a fade on these holes over the weekend…. I hit both driver shots dead straight into the hazard. :-(. I even kept the face flush at address. Not sure what further adjustments I should make. Thoughts? I am resisting going back to the old sins to fix this, and considering playing a hybrids off the tee and keep it short.

Did you practice these driver fades on the range first?
See “fade fine tuning” video or hit the hybrid too, if the second shot is not that long on that hole; if it is, then get to work on the range with the driver fade! 💪😀👍

This question is for Shawn, but maybe someone else can answer as well. Is there a way on the website to search for just the comments that I have posted? I can’t seem to find a way to do this.

WIG has been an awesome thing for my golf game. I still get into trouble when I have a pressure tee shot, when I’ve had a long wait on a tee or sometimes when I try to get a little extra distance. I end up setting up for a draw (my preferred drive ball flight) and basically hit a block or push left (Left handed golfer).

I’m not sure if this is set up or task???

Could be a little of both; for most Backhanders, they really don’t close the club face as much as they should; and with driver, initial direction is very club face related. Go to “draw fine tuning” and hook a few solid ones and then back off to a draw and see what happens!

Shawn when you say release to the target,do you mean when the hands turnover at about 4 o’clock at the follow thru.

Working on my fade and direction of release… at the end of the video, you state…”confirm that you release out there”… how do we know if we are releasing properly? Is there a video that addresses this?

The club face is set up how? Is it the same alignment as my feet and shoulders or do I have the club face aiming straight at target . Need a picture of club face and set up to a target.

    Shawn-

My achilles heel seems to be that at transition (as I’m trying to use the ground) I got from ok tilt to way over tilting to the right (as a right hander).

I’m in task, my shot is picked out, I’m essentially all good until BAM!, over tilt and then I have no chance of having the ball fly over my intermediate point with heavy manipulation. Most of the time, it’s fats, toes shots or sweeping hooks.

    Help me obi wan.

      Ok; question:
What do you see at address when looking down at the ball? What is your task or what is the last thing that goes through your mind just before you swing?

      Go to comment
    • From [email protected] on Tilt awareness-direction-practice

My focus at address is on my intermediate point.

My task is to send the ball over my intermediate point (small adjustments if I’m shaping a particular shot).

The last thing that goes through my mind is “Send the ball over the intermediate point”

      Ok, here we go!
The task is what is missing! You need to see clearly how that ball os going to get up in the air; are you using cutting the stem of the dandelion or grass (see grass whip training video) or driving through the door frame (see hammer drill video) or whipping the wood shavings that way (see Top 3 tasks and task cybervision videos) and lastly “throwing the club” and “predict contact” videos which will help perfect further.
The way you deliver the task will greatly affect your tilt through the ball!

Then comes: with what feel are you delivering the task with? See a very important series called “pre-motor cortex” series which deals with getting the right frame of mind around the perfect feel for the delivery of that task.

Hey Shawn. I just got back from the range today. It started out really inconsistent today. My irons have really improved a lot just from the whole catapult/sandbag toss mental models. Midway through my bucket, I started to realize that although I was clamping down on the shaft my grip felt full of instability and my top hand was definitely not keeping its structure through the swing. I decided to choke up about 1/2 – 3/4″ on my shaft and suddenly all my issues disappeared.

Here’s the question…do you see people holding the shaft to close to the end of the club and losing stability/balance. I feel like the choke up created a balance that made the swing feel incredibly more structured/balanced. Is chocking up sometimes a quick fix to a round that’s falling apart? I’d like to hear your thoughts on this…seemed like an aha moment but I don’t want to get carried away.

This is definitely a big aha moment! About 30% of tour players choke down or grip down on the club because they feel more leverage there. You just learned a very important lesson for your machine; This is how learning works and congrats!
Now stay with it and evolve some more!

    Hi Shawn,

I tried the throwing the football position, but I feel a bit off balance when I extend the club out that far out. Should the pressure be more on the balls of my feet or closer to the middle of the foot and the heel?

    Thanks,
    Calvin

      You are always looking for the centre of the arch where you feel all spikes in your shoes are secure to the ground;
See “Mile markers for balance” video and “target confirmation series” with the finish position as the confirmation for staying with the shot.

Used this in my round today. Worked very well now I won’t have to send my SW packing. 5 chips within 3′ too bad my putting wasn’t very good today. Might be a little different once I get farther back where hinge might be needed.

Did I miss a change in the grip. Thought the lead hand was diagonal along the life line and under the heal pad. I now it looks like you are advocating for more in the fingers. Is that correct or not.

    Go to comment
    • From Shawn Clement on Grip Update

      The lead hand just needs to feel solidly wrapped around the grip where you can hinge nicely without the club moving in your hand and it feels like you can get through all kinds of grass and sand and junk with it;

Is this what yours feels like it can support?

    Hello Shawn,
My golf shots are very good now. my 9 iron is straight and about 155. Thanks to your good teaching. I wanted to ask you something.

I notice with my Cobra F9 hybrid it has an offset. At least it appears that way. My hybrid shots are always going straight left with a hook. But my 5 wood is really good and straight.

Can you please explain how to hit this club? When I do hit it I am getting about 235 or so.

    Please help!!

    • From Shawn Clement on PERPETUAL MOTION-LEVITATION-KINETIC CHAIN ENGAGEMENT!

Too many hybrids were designed for big draw bias because too many golfers still don’t have our information. This is why players on tour have neutral-“tour preferred”gear that they can maneuver properly for fades and draws. Ping is nice and neutral and their hybrids are awesome in the G-410 and Titleist has a tour preferred model as well. I have had so many students say “i hit my fairway woods well but hybrids not; what is wrong with me”? Well, hybrids should be easier to hit than fairway woods, so that means the wrong club is in your hands and it looks like the case here.

Always try before you buy! 👍. Go hit some shots at a Golf Galaxy or PGA superstore and compare with other brands-ask for “tour preferred” neutral hybrids. Taylor made coined the tour preferred term…
