Hi Shawn, maybe I missed this in the video, do you have any tips re hitting in the middle of the club face?

I notice that on some videos when you are outside you do a lot from the rough. Is that so you can see the ideal strike location through the taller grass? Would be good for practice. Also the front view of this video shows how far back in your stance off the trail toe. I have been having trouble pulling my shots to the left but its probably due to the club already turning over because its past the ideal impact point. That might also explain why I have a hard time getting forward shaft lean to obtain a better impact.

On chipping, because there is way less lag and agressive hip clearing, the ball has to be on the back foot to allow the hands to naturally hang in front of the ball for natural lag; it is also the only place to use momentum from as placing it in the center of the stance would force you to shove on the club to get it to catch ball first!

Yup that was the video that I have been trying to find. Where I first saw you close the face with a neutral grip and causes you to get the club square by the tilt. It also caused the shaft lean that I was looking for. So now using this and Goldilocks for ball position should make it happen. Thanks

As I am practicing this, I noticed a slight grip adjustment is needed for the chip. Different from the full swing, I move the index finger and thumb of the trail hand back up the shaft (connected more to the other fingers). This seems to give the ACU more stability to maintain the lower case “y” throughout the swing. Does this make sense?

Shawn I see videos when chipping to choke down on the club. For me I tend to choke down with longer clubs say a 5 iron and more of a normal hand position with a higher club such as wedge. Is this still the correct thinking?

What is the purpose of the grip down though? Are you trying to CONTROL the shot or does it give you the ability to whip the club with more velocity and less effort?

For some reason the ability to make the video full screen seems to have disappeared. Any particular reason. I have always found it useful.

    Thanks

Still confused about the set up for this. Do you align first with the feet parallel to the target line or the line to the right edge of the shaft? Same with the face of the club, do you align the face to the target and if so how do you do that with a face that you close for a draw and a face that you open for a fade? Do you do this when you first set up and then what about the braced stance? doesn’t everything change again? I have looked at your beginner series and other videos and still not sure how to set up. Please cover this for me and not refer to other videos, because I have looked and can’t find a simple explanation. I think this could be covered better in the beginner series.

      Hi Richard!
The reason why you are struggling is that you are coming to the table with pre-conceived STATIC NOTIONS.
Ignore the club face because that changes dynamically during the swing. We never talk about lining up the club face ever.
Do this: see “blur of club” and deliver a nice arc-blur over the chosen intermediate point and out into the direction you want to start the ball. Let you body set up naturally to accommodate this. Then adjust the face of the club more open or closed depending on how much curve you want to have after you deliver that whipping arc over that intermediate point.
What you line up is the flow of “unstoppable momentum” which is the other video to complement the “blur of club” video

So much more powerful after doing this drill with my dominant trail hand. I was making the same mistake of not loading my trail arm. So I was only .using my weaker lead arm to play!

In this video, you talk about the circular movement. In my practice range session yesterday, I realized that this movement needs to start after a full turn and my back to the target, as I grip the ground. So, my tendency is to swing through to the target before going to grip the ground. So it seems that my focus needs to be…. grip the ground at the top of the backswing (levitation)…. then the circular movement to the release on the planted front foot. Do this make sense, as I think this through?

That move forward to start the swing with the knee is crucial to continue the feel of perpetual motion. Otherwise I’m back in a static position over the ball with out a started move and that creates more tension. I was trying to move the club forward over the ball before the back swing while it works it probably not ideal to not have the club down behind the ball. Or a Jason Dufner waggle where the back wing starts immediately when the club is placed behind the ball. Surprisingly it works but this seems more consistent. Love It!!

    Hi Shawn,

I actually do my pitching like this as well (after watching all your videos), hardly any wrist hinge. I use 4 wedges: 60, 56, 50 and 45. 60 does a nice 50 yards, 56 does a nice 65 yards, 50 does a nice 80 yards and 45 does a nice 100 yards. No effort and no noticable wrist hinge as such, just simple perpetual motion to target. It’s very accurate, do you see any problems with that?

I can obviously shorten the yardages or lenghthen the yardages with each club with a little less effort or going down the grip a touch etc.

I noticed you were setting up at the low point and not the ball in your driver examples in this video which was 3-4” behind the ball. You probably explain this in future videos but I’m going chronologically…the driver is my least comfortable club…probably because I try to manipulate it.

I am sure you watched a few more driver videos like “great driver nugget” and the “driver” and “driver part 2” videos as well as other videos such as the “spinning” series with Driver; how are you doing with it now?
