Great video again! I see others stating not using so much forward press as this will reduce the risk of hitting the ground and give more variety of type of chips as well as keeping the ball by the front foot by default?

And why are they hitting the ground? 🤔. Maybe because they are hitting at the ball instead of focusing on a task of cutting along the ground towards the target? 😝😝
EVERYTHING we do here is tried and true according to human anatomy and human motor skill behaviour when on a specific task. Let me know how you do!

One of the things I find useful is place cocktail napkins in locations I want to land the ball. I’ll put several out there from 6’ away every 3 or 4 feet but all on the same target line. I turn that into a game giving myself three then two shots at each target to hit the five or so targets out there. If I miss I start again. On a green I’ll use tees. Really gives you a great idea of distance in the air vs roll out based on the wedge or club loft.

Hey Shawn I always go back to the feet together drill. One thing I noticed recently from using this and throwing the club is how it makes my release more outwards as opposed to underneath does that make sense? When I separate my feet it’s easy to stand taller, I lifted my lead shoulder like mu to get that club long and straight underneath me and have my trail wrist in a bowling position facing down which feels like I’m using the battering ram straight back and through… but my feet together I can’t get into that position the club feels too long so my shaft angle isn’t as aligned to my arms angle and my wrists release like a sling of a ball more horizontally. That made a huge breakthrough for me I hope that made sense

      Hey Ross!
the closer the feet are together, the less you can tilt and vice versa because the body needs support under the tilt. Makes sense with the description you gave?

It does mate yeah and makes sense why i can feel how feet and knees together makes my club release more outwards and both hands feel like they are doing a topspin shot in tennis, my hands and body stay low and in posture, with my ass catapulting the throw . Split stance or 1 leg I still tend to get left side much taller it’s not so much tilt of body just a long left arm and then I can throw it more underneath me like using a cricket bat and swinging for a six like Sav and Mu. But cos both feel solid im not sure what to go with and sometimes get stuck between the 2 feelings which is obviously a short circuit. What do you think?

Good stuff Ross; the answer has to fit together with the shot you are getting ready to deliver into. Low draw feels less titled and high fade feels more tilted. So see “tilt mile markers” and all the tilt and head position videos on premium and match that up to different tasks and shots. See also the “match task to target” videos.

  • From Eric Strebel on DIAGONAL SERIES PART 3-LONG IRONS AND FAIRWAY WOODS

    Hi Shawn,
For a 3w high draw, when you say it feels like “I can get up that high now” when you set up, what is actually happening to deliver more loft to the ball? For the stinger, it makes sense to me that the face can be delofted with a path extending closer to the ground. For the high draw, is the club skipping the turf at impact with maximum loft delivered? It seems only so much loft can be delivered before striking it thin. What is the loft of your 3w? I have mine set to 15.5 and can never get close to the height you’re hitting it!
Thanks!(long time fan, since the days of the tip jar)

Great video as always Shawn. Stuck at 105-107 mph club speed. Looking to reach 112-113. Any advice how you reached this point in your golf game?

Hey Brian! It can be either lack of turn in the backswing, lack of use of legs to pump the swing’s g-forces in the through swing, it could be a tweak in the grip…So this is where we need to get together on a skype or facetime call after you send me your videos for review; to answer your question off the cuff is very difficult.

    Hi Shawn,
do you have an alternate image with the same effect as the ‘dandelion stem’ ? I’d love to use it; so far my mind is looking for it, just does not “see” it. I just seem to not perceive the sole of the club as being a gras cutting tool, my mind rather perceives the entire club face in motion. At times I can perceive the ball as ‘floating’ above the playing surface, but not consistently. I go with ‘carrot peel’ and ‘sending two tees towards the target’ as well as ‘fixed lowest point of the swing’. In all these my mind does not perceive the leading edge of the club as being in motion, but as stated, the entire clubface. For ‘unstoppable momentum’ I ideally would like to have, next to goldilocks, suitable imagery for the feel through the bottom of the arc, – finetuning. What do you suggest – do I have to wait for the dandelions to grow 🙂 ?
    Best regards

My original was the sole of the club as a flat stone that skips on the surface of the water; I use this in the fairway woods! See my fairway woods videos and look for that feel and sound in your irons too; it has been a great help to many of my students and I will need to make another video about that to add to the task list for the irons on premium! 😀👍

      Thank you,
indeed, I successfully use your goldilocks guidance with the sole of the woods; it is very helpful. I will try to mentally ‘widen’ the sole of my irons and play them more like woods.

In one video you mention that you see the bottom of the club hitting the ball hitting the gras catching the soil etc., suggesting that you ‘feel’ and predict the divot. That feeling and prediction has eluded me so far as well.

When you see the “predict contact” video, the deal is you throw the club in the direction you want to start the ball with the prediction that the SOLE OF CLUB is low enough to deflect. See where that deflection is when throwing to that direction and place the ball at the backside of the scuff mark.

A small lateral move to start the backswing is getting positive results. It feels like it is engaging my rear glute . It feels like I am more on top of the rear leg and my glut gets deeper. But the real payoff seems to be in the downswing. It feels like I can just fall to get the ground. It’s just a very subtle micro move to start the backswing. I’m very curious as to your thoughts your on this.
    Thank you Shawn #1

A very good target on the green/fringe can be lighter or darker gras patches.

What a revelation this Wisdom 1.0 series has been. I’m in my mid thirties and have played golf for a number of years getting to a 12 handicap. I’ve always felt Ive had the athletic ability to hit a ball far and well however it just never happened and have always been on the shorter side of shots against my peers.

After just 2 short sessions at the practice range following a couple of swing thoughts in this course I am seeing a ball flight that I have never had before.. and in a good way. More accurate, consistent and penetrating compared to my usual hopeful, inconsistent, and floaty fades.

Thanks a million. Now to remember to throw the club at a target on the course, and not look to hit the ball.

Wow! I love the analogy to the underhand football. I am struggling with the head of the club coming from the outside of my intended direction, which sucks the “whipping” action and makes it very hard to see any blur of the club to the right side of my intermediate target. With this drill, my downswing feels completely on plane without thinking about “shallowing” from the top.

When the snow clears, I can’t wait to tie this drill to throwing the club! It really really takes my mind off the ball as a target. A real gem.

Hi Shawn I usually use too much suction cups on feet when asked and that is detriment for a clean contact. So I look at the conversation below and pulled up walking drill and that drill I see me using that on golf course otherwise I be chicken winged
