Great addition to your other grip videos. The point about pressure on the index finger at the top of the back swing has actually helped with my tempo. A common problem for me is being overzealous, rushing the downswing and hitting a low, thin worm burner. I now try to use the index pressure at the top as a cue, “Okay, wrists are set, club has paused, now let gravity take it through to the down swing.”
Right on Jon, awesome stepping stone to transition mentally to the downswing focus which should be to engage the kinetic chain. Tasks such as “throwing the club” and “delivering the stem of the dandelion to target” will engage the weightshift and body turn without thinking and get you connected to the target.
I have been struggling to release the club This video may have just turned the light on for me. I’m thinking stick the landing with lead hand follow thru. Was consistently hitting my target on my practice net. Will see how it goes at the range and course.
Practicing SEEING THE BALL ROLL INTO THE HOLE AND AT THE SPEED YOU WANT TO SEE IT ROLL IN is the secret to never leaving putts short. See the ball roll into the hole from about 4 feet short at that speed, then let the weight of the arms and putter roll the ball into that picture with no interference or carefulness.
By far the best video ever. Can`t wait to try this on the range. The overhead drone view is really great and carifies things, just as if I was there swinging myself.
I have been having so much fun with this drill lately; just a blast! Had my best ball striking round day before yesterday with 15 greens in reg and 10 fairways hit with my stock effortless swing because I was finding my swing better as a result of a few days hitting shots with this drill. This one is a keeper and what makes it special is the task and visual associated with it! 😀👍
I really like this concept. Pre-setting in the start position to ensure to get into the proper position for more consistent ball direction. At what point in the normal golf swing would you expect to have achieved this same position that you are pre-setting?
If you look at the “perpetual motion drill series” you will identify it right away as half way back as the trail arm folds and the wrists hinge up into that “backswing levitation” which is also a video title to watch…👍😀
Very helpful Shawn! I can see now that I really need to practise these drills /feels to be able to abandon my manipulative approach! Thanks so much for your response to my Faults and Fixes question. The fixes of course lie in getting to grips with your teaching and drills which i need to be doing. Old habits die hard! Regards Ian
Shawn – I love this lesson. I have been having trouble staying behind the ball with the driver and fairway woods. I am lunging on the downswing. This drill almost forces me to keep the head back on the downswing. Excellent
This also helps me to complete my backswing with a driver. I have a hard completing from a regular takeaway. Now I just have to connect the regular takeaway to the point the axe takes over.
Wow Shawn! I viewed this video just before playing this morning and suddenly everything seemed to click in my brain. I have worked on the hammer drill and the axe drills and cut a lot of grass but have continued to struggle with my swing. For the first time today using this drill on my practice swing I felt so much more in synch and in balance and my ball striking and ball direction were so much better. Nice little draws and I felt like I could really put a hurt on the golf ball. Thanks for sharing this fantastic drill.
Just a question about the clubface angle in the pre-set. When performing a normal swing I have the feeling of the clubface facing the ball on the takeaway to keep my backswing matching the ball direction. Your preset clubface would be open for me. When I try this drill would more a closed clubface at the preset position be a good idea?
Perfect timing Shawn – heading out to try this within the hour! Question I have after watching the overhead view – are you concentrating on having the shaft pointed along the target line (intermediate point) when you “set the axe” ? Or does it not matter where the club is loaded, but more important where it ends up?
No, I am setting the axe in the manner necessary to cut through and send the dandelion stem in the direction I want to send the golf ball. That intermediate point is important!
