Subtle in some ways is tilt vs tilt with the balancing butt rotation. If I’m not in sync at setup, I can tilt without that rotation and then get stuck behind the sternal notch/ midpoint and thin the ball strike. I find balanced tilt with butt rotation, slow backswing to allow for nice transition and engage the ground with the front foot and then ball grass dirt…or sweep with the woods..thanks
I’ve been working on my braced tilt. This was a great video for me to reinforce the concept of maintaining the tilt throughout the swing. I am confused about the position of the sternal notch. It was my understanding that the low point in the swing is below the sternal notch. I have been trying to set my tilt and keep my sternal notch in front of the ball for iron shots. From what I can see in the video the sternal notch is actually set behind the ball and kept there throughout the swing?
Don’t try to place the sternal notch; use the blur of club and the low point of the blur to see where the low point is when you deliver your throw through ball and intermediate point or through the 2 tee drill. This will place the sternal notch in the right place.
Hey Shawn! Having some grip problems. No matter how I change my grip in my fingers I always seem to get movement around my pinky on the lead hand, no amout of in the fingers or grip tension keeps the bottom end of the grip from sliding up. Could this be a problem with grip size? I use standard grips and I wear a L-XL glove.
Yes! That makes sense because I am large for a mid size and Mu is XL and he has JUMBO GRIPS. Get a larger grip installed on one of your clubs like an 8 iron or 7 iron and see how it feels and then do the set.
hey Shawn – new member here (long-time lurker on youtube!)….my question is re: the closed vs. open face of the driver during setup. I have a pretty good feel on that with my iron play to work a draw or straight fade, but not exactly sure how that should look with my driver. Hope that makes sense…thanks in advance!
Hi George! Sorry I missed this one! Some of my students need to close the woods more and some less and some about the same; it depends on your perception of the club’s design, the design of the club or how you are reacting to the different centre of mass of the club during the swing. See “the goldie-locks series” as well as “draw fine tuning” and “fade fine tuning” to lock in with all your clubs! 😀👍
Another favorited video, Shawn! Everytime I find an icing on the cake video, you cut us another piece. 😉 Grip strength, ball position, tilt….all knobs to adjust to achieve the flight plan!
Hi all from Italy. I wanted to clear up a doubt once and for all. The swing is guided by the body and not by the arms. Do these have to be totally defenseless? As if they were anesthetized? Should the arm and the right hand impart speed or is gravity combined with the oscillation of the body sufficient? Thanks
Hello Andrea! Nice post! And I know the information can be very confusing. The key here is it works just like hitting a baseball, throwing a baseball, serving in tennis, smashing a ping pong ball etc… The KINETIC CHAIN of the human machine comprises the arms and they are controlled at 40 Million bits per second by the brain WHEN ON A SPECIFIC TASK. My favourite task is to throw the club, so see the “throwing series” and combine that with an expanded prediction of how the ball-grass-ground will be in the way of this throw. Then see “kinetic chain series” and “kinetic chain engagement series”. The arms adapt the tone needed to get through the shot into the flight plan with their particular lie. See also “using the weight in the swing-axe drill with Savy” which, again, would be like using an axe to take down a tree and the arms are a part of that kinetic chain. Shawn
Hey Claud! You can start with the “list of videos by date” and depending on your skill level and age you would want to start with “the senior series” or the “beginner series” or the general “wisdom in golf 1.0”
Then leave another comment and let me know what you want to improve and I will get you on the right track! 😀👍
Just re-watched this video. I decided to give the looking at the hole option a try. Once I trusted my motion and focused on seeing the ball roll in and using a pendulum of momentum to roll the ball to the hole it really started to click. I worked on it yesterday afternoon and evening in my basement on carpet. Today I took it to the course and putted better than I have in months. I made more 5-10 footers than I ever remember making in a round. That’s just after one day of practicing it. My distance control was amazing, even on uphill and downhill putts. Looking at the hole has let my brain solve the momentum equation and keeps me so much more focused. Would recommend anyone try it. Maybe it will click for you like it did for me?
Right on Dave! Had one of my best putting rounds when I played Pinehurst #2 from the tips and drove the ball like a champ and hit solid irons all day and was able to take it home with awesome putting while looking at the hole; apart from 2 doubles, shot a nice tidy 76 from all the way back at 7600 yards. Just a blast! Putting well is the cherry on the sundae!
One question Shawn, on long putts where there is significant break and you have to aim well left or right of the hole to start the putt do you look at the path you want the ball to go to the hole with hole in periphery or do you look at the hole the whole time and realize the ball is starting well right or left and then coming back?
It starts with the last 6 feet to the hole and how the ball will roll into it and at what speed; then you work your way back to the ball from there and to the line you want the putt to start on. Picture how gravity will take the ball after it comes off the putter face and match it all the way to the last 6 feet and let the momentum react to that. It is multi phased for sure!
This works well Shawn. Thanks! For really long putts that need a lot of momentum I’ve found I have the tendency to miss-hit poorly at times. Either a scuff of the ground or a topped ball that goes hard left etc. Any tips for solid contact on longer efforts while not looking at the ball?
For longer putts you may need to look at the ball because the range of motion in the neck will be compromised. Also, hovering the arm-putter unit just above the grass from the shoulder sockets takes care of the scuffs…
Oh yeah! Worked on head position to go with the tilt and what a game changer. I could never seem to have any momentum on the downswing. This did it for me and I finally realized what unstoppable Kinetic chain was all about. I can flat crush it now, also by having my head too vertical was aggravating a neck issue I have in my neck vertebra.
Changing my head position just slightly made a huge difference in being able to rotate more in the back swing. What is interesting is it is a slightly different view with my head slightly turned but man it unloaded my neck vertebra and if I do not see that different view I know I have my head too vertical.
Hey Sam! Not really; again, you want to have the hands in a way that the wrists are gojng to hinge together and not fight for which one will get to hinge. Once the hands are on the club, it should feel like one hand with 8 fingers and 2 thumbs.
Hi Chris, yes! But This happens naturally and should never need to be thought of. To truly have Wu Wei in the swing, one needs to have a proper task. See “kinetic chain engagement series” #6 is my favourite!! You will see a nice over head view with the drone in that video that will really light your mind! Practice this somewhere, you can do just grass blades if you don’t want to damage the grass or you can do sand if you are at the beach!
Hi Chris; VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION!
see “club speed” video first; then see “using the weight in your swing-axe drill with Savy” and the “throwing series” after that. Never think about body parts as this will massively sabotage the natural sequence of the swing!
Hi Shawn, I noticed that you don’t address the driver directly behind the ball. Is that something I should be doing too? I usually have the driver head directly behind the ball more forward in my stance.
Also I’ve gained a ton of ch speed but I’m getting golfers elbow in my lead arm. How can I get that arm to be more relaxed in the swing and collapse on the follow through?
Hey Jeremy! See these videos in the “list of videos by date” and search: “driver” and Driver part 2” then for the arms see “lead hand release”, “trail hand release”, “release fine tuning” and “snap release polish” then “turbo charge lead hand release”, “turbo charge trail hand release” and the first few videos of the “off season training series 2020-21”
