I think I just had a glorious Shawn Clement aha moment. Watched a number of the perpetual motion and kinetic chain videos. Also watched a lesson you posted out on Youtube a few years back where the student has a top of swing position akin to mine that I mentioned below. I am good for now. You get him to feel the levitation and to release more out into the picture.
Perpetual motion. Kinetic chain. And, especially the feeling of LEVITATION really helped. I think my mind associate my hands going deep as me making a good full rotation which carries my hands deep. Now my mind / body feels the levitation up, up, up. At first it felt like I wasn’t rotating because the arms/hands weren’t going deep. First time ever in 20 years of playing I have ever been able to get my arms above shoulder height. And, the access to the target….BAM. Likely the best contact I have ever made. Great fun.
Running with this for a while. Thanks, Shawn.
You nailed it!! “backswing levitation” is the name of the video on premium too. The best way by far to facilitate the engagement of the kinetic chain. BIG NUGGET YOU JUST UN EARTHED FOR YOURSELF; very proud coach here! 😀👍💪👌
Full disclosure: I may be a shot putter. Even when I am very much thinking throw, my left arm is low along my shoulders at the top, my right arm isn’t bent more than 90, but the right elbow is back AND I don’t have a lot of lag or bent right arm at impact.
When I throw the club one-armed through the ball, my natural tendencies are the same, the right arm is still deep, albeit, the right arm is much more extended at the top. My left arm one-arm throws through the ball go back to along shoulder line at the top. I don’t seem to naturally get in the more upright swing positions of you and Bubba.
Have you ever had a student that was swinging well and ended up in a shoulder-line top of swing position? If not, what concepts and/or drills would help me have an aha! moment. Thank you.
Love the way you worked through your situation with your post above; tremendous learning experience you just made for yourself! 👌👍💪
Hi Shawn is my backswing left arm straight at the top but not a foot away from me more like 6 inches . In other words I m having a really having a hard time getting my arms in the position you have them
If you were to use the perpetual motion drill to cut the grass in both directions, would you have any issues doing this like in the “perpetual motion drill series”?
I have had a problem with consistently lately. My partner feels that I am flipping or cocking my wrists at the top, creating a hitch. Any idea what analogy I should use to eliminate? I am thinking about throwing a sledge hammer which helps, but then I start to concentrate on the position of my wrists. thank you
Hey Jason! Haha, there it is!! You are concerned about the position of the wrists in the backswing and that is where the focus is so of course there will be a hitch in that sucker! 😝👍!
Use the perpetual motion drill big time. As you swing back and through without stopping, you can then bring your mind to different areas of the swing and become aware of the way the wrists hinge as an example. If you feel everything is good, then when you get to the ball, you focus only on the feel of the release (see lead hand release, trail hand release, and release fine tuning videos) in the direction following the arc-blur to the side of the intermediate point you want to deliver into.
There is no way you can get a descent release without a proper hinge so with that “order” to the brain, it will go get a nice hinged backswing for you, the one you felt in the PMD drill. But if you interfere with the flow of things by making sure, you throw a BIG FAT WRENCH into the movement.
Any advice on how to ensure a full turn in the backswing? When I don’t complete the turn in the backswing I use to much arms and contact is very inconsistent. I’m looking for something that will help me focus on completely my turn to get my backside to the target. Thanks!
You bet! See “lead hand release” and “purpose of the backswing” videos on premium! 😀👍
