Does cutting the stem still work with the fairway woods off the deck? I tend to hit those a little lower. Make sense to switch to the fade, slightly more forward in stance, stay with the direction with ease?
Hi Shawn,
back to the basics.
Is there such a thing as too much tilt and too much head tilt.
My consistency off the TEE with the driver/3W as well as the irons were greatly suffering.
Tried to figure it out.
Off the TEE – I realized that I was getting into a tilted position as soon as I stood over the ball. Had no clue why my 3 wood was topping sometimes or why I am pulling or many a times was just unable to finish my follow through.
Golden nugget was so simple:- Instead chose my IP, get an idea of a flight plan (still lazy sometimes doing this). Here was the key , stand over the ball get into posture, take the club 6 inches behind ( driver), and THEN tilt slightly and THEN the head. It feels I just cant do wrong anymore off the tee. The pre tilt with further tilt and the bump towards target ( like sav) was just messing it all up.
Biggest gain is the confidence and the prediction of me hitting the driver or 3w on the tee box.
Sadly not so much irons. I have started hitting fades not just well but find them to be very accurate. But a draw or a shot that I am trying to hit over IP I just cannot predict. Either I am going into a pre tilt at setup or tilting too much. I either end up feeling (instead of momentum already there) I am gonna jab hard at the ball or I cannot get into my finish. So either I hit a huge draw with immense effort or I hit a push right. Its getting so frustrating.
Sorry I missed this one; when getting set up; ALWAY ASK YOURSELF IF YOU WILL BE ABLE TO PERFORM THE TASK EASILY WITH MOMENTUM FROM WHERE YOU ARE STANDING. You need to stop thinking literally, a lot of my instruction I have to use body references because of the nature of the industry; so if you feel uncomfortable over the ball it is because one of the BIG 4 items of set up is out of place and DOES NOT MATCH THE INTENT OF THE SHOT. Revisit the “goldilocks series” and apply this to the tilt as well with “tilt mile markers” and “contact mile markers”
Hi Shawn,
How to hit a big fade?
My home course is a Slicers paradise.
Hitting my draw and a straight shot well.
Hitting my small fade very well.
But many times I find myself with trees on my right and target is behind the over hang of the trees.
I set up my Ip left of the foliage, I stand towards the left of my IP and swing left of the IP.
Two things happen, 75% of the time I go straight into the Foliage or I start it way left and stays there.
1-you never do anything wrong
2-you can only start slicing clubs at the 5 iron and woods
3-NEVER RELEASE TOWARDS TROUBLE!!!!-use a different option and take your medicine.
Hey Shawn! Awesome video and the go pro vantage point is a major help. For these three shots 1) fringe with tight lie 2) rough with deep lie 3) rough with surface/sitting up lie, if we had a low bounce wedge and a high bounce wedge (I have a 60* with 4* bounce, 56* with 12* bounce, and 50* with 12* bounce), when do we use which? And, does that change if the ball is on a slope that is uphill or downhill of us (in direction of the target)?
Hey Dexter! Loft has a huge effect to consider as well; consider first where you want to land tge ball, then figure out how much roll you will need from there to determine loft; then choose the bounce depending on the lie; soft and tight you want more bounce and you activate it by opening the face a tad.
Thanks Shawn! Could you clarify regarding when to use bounce? soft and tight? I thought those were opposites! 😆 meaning a tight lie would be on firm grass where as soft would be thick grass.
Depends where in the world you are! We have tight lies with very short grass on soft ground; where a 4 degree bounce would dig easily…so better to go 56 and open the face slightly to not dig; if you are in firm sand, then 4 bounce is great and high bounce not so good. Anything works in the rough open of closed depending on how far you need to land.
WOW, just signed up for your premium channel, watched a bunch of vids and dropped my handycap from 30 to 6 in thirty five days, I am 67 yrs old and just started playing 15 months ago when I retired and moved to Myrtle Beach. Thanks to you it is now FUN!!!
This is just the video I needed after our session in Carlsbad! Thank you for bringing my awareness to this, I was really able to feel myself losing balance forward during my practice session today. I think I just need more practice with this “anchoring the head for the release” feel and I bet I’ll get a lot more consistent/effortless power!
You bet Phuong! This is a good one! Make sure you combine with “alignment reload”, “blur of club” and the “arc blur unstoppable momentum series’ It was so awesome to meet you; that was a lot of fun!!😀👍
Ok, good feedback! See “feet together back to feet apart” and try the swing caddy again!
California event was cancelled 3 weeks prior to the date; we are still scratching our heads; I was fully booked so I went down to do my clinics like the old days before Covid; had a blast with both my students and the great folks at Cobra!
Hey Mark! Good question! I have not seen Mu’s from his bag in a long while so I forget! 😝
But I would say that it would be a great idea to match up to the grip size and material you are using on your set for sure!
Hi Shawn,
Been topping my 5 wood , have tried taking the ball position back, and then tendency to hit into the ground or not finish my swing. Been doing it for a week my fairway woods. My driver is going long and straight. Any videos I can watch regarding topping of Fairway woods.
Great video.
What did you do to correct your shot that you hit First which started left and stayed left. The first shot you hit is my typical miss when I hit a fade.
it is just once; it will not repeat so there is nothing to fix! If that happened 3 times in a row, then I would simply open the face a bit more and continue to let momentum flow left of the IP; see “fade fine tuning”
hey Shawn just working with swing caddie at the range.and found out with setting on hundred mph the only way I could clic it was either one leg drill or feet together. may swing is more centered with either one eh!!! thx
mark
ps how did mu and savanna do in California
Allow things to evolve! 😀👍
as the swing gets higher, the arms start to track better, then the legs will start responding to turbo charge the legs and another chapter will begin!
Now that I fully grasp what out of the way REALLY feels like I think it’s the single best piece of golf instruction in the history of the game. It puts everything you need to do on autopilot. Tempo, balance, rhythm, full turn, full finish, natural hinge. It’s got it all!
Shawn is it suitable to just play w the task of get out of the way + chest to target? While I’m grooving this in I find if i try cut grass / dandelion stems I start to default to cheating it with the arms a little.
This is good to know since I had a similar question to Matthew’s. I have a disconnect in combining getting out of the way with a task since i would never think or focus on getting out of the way if i were to throw a club, cut grass or slash a sword.
Some players have developed their games around themes of “when I do this, I get great contact” and the contact issue is very much subconscious; this is Matthew’s case. For a lot of us, having a simple task delivered with momentum and freedom is what puts the mind at ease and stops it from getting into the “make sure” and “be careful” mode which impedes the ability to deliver with ease.
This was tough drill to do 😅 First my divots were everywhere. When i was able use more momentun and getting out off the way, they started to line up 👍😯🙂
Hi Shawn,
as I have experienced different distances of the IP infront of the ball does have different results.
For the driver I can keep it up to 2 feet in front, for the irons I am very confused.
One thing is clear without the IP the swing can get you in to all kinds of trouble.
Is there a hard and fast rule how far the IP should be ahead of the ball for different clubs?
Well, there are no hard and fast rules about how people think and organize their thoughts; this is why I love the variety in my work! 😀👍
what I am showing is a very apparent pattern of how the eyes relay information to the brain. When you look at Anika Sorrenstam and David Duval, they both found a different way to find the target; time to find yours! 😀👍
Playing a Golf league here these days.
To put it simply, you ARE the best teacher out there!!! Your methods can get a person on course within a week!
I have never been so consistent off the tee, Yes I do have issues, where I top my 3 wood occasionally. Irons I need to be more consistent. Somehow I am unable to levitate and my draws become pushes or low draws.
A very important shot 142y to flag I decided to hit a 9 Fade, and I shanked it, unluckily went OB and it was my stroke hole. I just cant figure out what went wrong. I hit my 9i 150Y.
Tomorrow hoping to make a video of iron shots and will try and do a video session with you next week. Really looking forward to that.
