Shawn, your teaching has made golf enjoyable again. I love your approach. One thing I’m struggling with is the football drill and the kinetic chain (move out of the way) seem to battle each other. I’m a lifetime early extender (likely from college water polo) but your kinetic chain videos, hammer throws and one leg drill have really helped to cure it. When I try to incorporate the football drill I stripe the ball for a couple shorts with incredible control but shortly revert to my early extension (pelvis out towards ball). Any videos or thoughts on how to get best of both worlds
Very good! The jackknife drill’s goal is to get you to a release that is on the target side of the ball in the direction you want to start the ball. For that, there can be no doubt about ball position, distance to the ball, grip and club relationship and levels to take divots on the target side of the ball. See the “goldilocks series” for that Big 4. Now remember that these 4 items are based on you letting the jackknife release you past the ball to the side of the intermediate point required for the shot. See “G force series” and keep polishing the feel of that release with the “important release update” video.
It looks like you play the ball off your lead toe with driver. Did not notice that in other videos. Also , Shawn i sent two of my videos on the Golf live app for your review. I am unable to confirm if they were sent.
Love these two videos. After watching the first I took it to the range and really focused on being wide and turning my backside to the target and slinging instead of guiding. Huge improvement particularly in my short and mid irons and some improvement on my woods. Long irons were still not great. I think a big part of the problem was being too ball forward in my stance-with pulls and big slices being the result. Any recommendations on what to work on to really get this down?
Make sure distance to ball is adequate! Hands cannot be same distance to body than mid or short irons! They need to be farther! This is a big one! See Distance to ball in the “goldilocks series”
These videos are great! Do the arms and hands do anything actively in the downswing, or are they 100% reacting to gravity & momentum? I’ve watched a lot of your videos & want to make sure I am not adding anything that doesn’t belong. Thanks!
Shawn,
I would like your opinion re: applying WIG iron play principles to game improvement irons. I have a set of Ping G730 irons.Extremely forgiving and good for a high handicap golfer. Having difficulty getting the ball to draw and fade with these irons and I read that game improvement irons are specifically engineered with high MOI to resist shot shaping and they primarily send the ball straight and high with more distance and less spin. Most blogs recommend upgrading to blades as one’s game improves in order to be able to shape shots. I did try to draw the ball on occasion with strong grip, diagonal stance, ball back from center to right side of I.P. The ball usually goes right into the trees /OB without drawing.fades not consistent but slightly better.Have you addressed this in a video previously? What are your thoughts? Thanks!
Sounds like possible path and release polish issue. See “ trail hand release” and “important release update” as well as “snap release polish” and the last video of the “g force series” and match that with “backswing masterclass” and”how to match backswing to ball direction”
The doctor and I share some of the same issues. So it was extremely helpful to see the view from another perspective. It is difficult to get away from the ball being the target. However, the big four and the 9 steps you gave me are consistent. Feeling for the snap should be the focus. I am recalling that task trumps everything. The only task that communicates feeling the snap is throwing the club. I too need the bigger turn, narrower stance. I tend to use a diagonal stance however I am going to observe the trail foot being open. With my feet square there is no way I can snap it left. If the front foot is open I can snap it straight or right.
I keep watching this video as it speaks to me in a very powerful way. I remember in my session with you that I had the same discovery in that I should be going for a point past the ball. If I was hammering or grass cutting I could not consistently stick with the intermediate point. My very first lesson you told me I needed more width in my backswing. Watching the feet position and how it opens me up for the backswing is huge. Especially as my rear hip is bone on bone. Staying behind the hit I have heard you say for years. Now I can stay behind the hit, get a wide backswing, and whip the club in the direction of the intermediate point which keeps me centered. I have the sledge hammer and an axe in my living room. I can practice and see how my intentions control what my body does and how accurate I am. I understand what you say when you say does it match your picture. This is much easier than trying to find a specific point. For example it always feels like my ball is forward in my stance. Now I do not care about that. My concern is where the ball is allowing me to stay with my task knowing that I will smash it in the direction of my picture.
My body is very sore today so I am not playing. However, I am getting up for a few minutes at a time and working on the drills I saw today.
Use the sledge hammer in perpetual motion. .. What I learned is that I have to bend my knees to let my arms hang. Now the hammer swings freely without using arm muscles.
Place ball against hammer, Find the correct setup to go left and right
How much to open the rear foot with each club. I have a diagonal stance but the foot still needs to be open.
How much to open the front foot to support going to my target.
I’m so happy to see Terry go through this transformation through ALL THE CLUBS while using the same tasks and feels of momentum to deliver the strike. And even happier to see Shawn light up when Terry is moving closer to his potential at the speed of light before his eyes!
So if I heard right, he was hitting his 7 iron 145, driver 210 and during the session hit his 7 iron 195 and driver 280? WOW! I assume his swing speed increased dramatically during the session or was it more about miss hits and club face causing shorter distances?
Hey Mark! Both! When we took the friction out of the swing, and pointed the swing in the right direction with a much more closed club face, then the snap was able to happen and it turbo charged the speed and compression!!
Hi Shawn, I have been a long time follower and just joined the premium channel. Your instruction has helped me tremendously. One thing I am still struggling with is getting a better launch angle on my irons, especially 4-8 iron. Any tips on how to get more launch angle with these irons? Thanks in advance!
Hi Jay! That is all about task and focus; one of my favourite tasks with irons is whipping divots into bushes and trees! See “kinetic chain facilitation series #6” and pick a tree to send divots into and send them on a ladder! Send some 4 feet up and send some 8 feet up!
I have decided to share this here instead of emailing you hopefully to encourage others. I have attended a camp, watched countless videos on YouTube and the premium channel. In the course of this seven year period I was exposed to so much yet my game has not improved. I have been chasing techniques seems like every other round. I have had in person lessons and several YouTube coaches. I came back here a couple of months ago. I would do well in my sessions with Shawn but it did not translate to my game. The last two days were miraculous in my estimation. I watched two old videos not even related to what Shawn shared in our sessions. The miracle is the light came on and I got mental and physical clarity. Yesterday, it was my width of stance was too wide. My feet are narrow and flare outward when I walk. That is the stance I use for everything. Now I access the intermediate point using momentum to cut the grass by throwing the club. Today, I heard and saw Shawn say cut the grass with the leading edge of the club. Now I have heard this several times. With the correct stance and grip cutting with the leading edge seemed so instinctive. Finally, walking drill where I concentrated on using the leading edge to cut the grass without my arms crashing into my body. Finding width in my swing and an anchor in my snap release. I see a great future success is inevitable!
Stick with Shawn, Do the work, Trust the Process
This is exactly how this is supposed to work! Well done David! You are doing it brother!
the brain seeks the path of less resistance to keep you on this planet as long as possible when it comes to physical exertion. When you stick to a task and continue to deliver this task to specific flight plans, things merge, come together and then the Ah Has come…then you acquire permanent skill. Want to dismantle this? Easy! Strain, think hard about the parts and make sure you steer and manipulate them into positions, ignore the flight plan,
Hi Shawn! Love your instruction! I am working through all your core videos list, just watched process part 4, I understand the concept of fade vs draw but when I’m out on the I can rarely make the ball draw with any club, i can straighten it out a bit or slice it but can’t quite get the draw consistently, when i do make it go left once in a while its more of Hook. Any advice?
Right on man! Get with the “trail hand release” and then the “important release update” video. Then see “bolted and centred” to anchor this release! Between shots on the course, keep doing the drill in the “important release update” video
I was a pull hitter in baseball, so a pull hook is something I have to watch out for. This really connected with me. When I tried this double overlap, I could feel the release of my right hand happening after the ball is struck deep into the swing. Great stuff! I will be using this in my practice routine. I have taken a lot of golf lessons and worked on all the angles. My instructors were puzzled as to why I had deep lag and could still hit it fat. I have never heard this, makes total sense to me.
“Shawn, to overcome inertia from the address position, is the correct sequence keeping the triangle until 45º, followed by the fold, and then the hinge, allowing the arms to elevate?”
Love the video lesson. Since I am just getting back (again) into Wisdom, I am looking at little things in the swing. I noticed he does not appear to be braced on his takeaway/backswing. Is this something you are still teaching? THank you.
