Great video Shawn….what always amazes me when watching your videos is the mellow tempo in your swing!
I played last week and concentrated on relaxed shoulders, forearms and wrists , but keeping a firm grip and not trying to pull or yank down on the club from the top. I took an extra club on a lot of shots to keep my swing tempo more in synch. It was by far my best ball striking round ever and finished 3 over! (If I putted better I think I would have been even for the round). Feeling the “Weight of The Arm-Club” unit and not over swinging (low stress swing) are two most important concepts you’ve taught me thru your website…thanks and keep these great vids coming!

Hi Shawn .. when I try the draw it’s high right blocks every time .. when I got behind the ball .. the shoulder alignment and legs were not aligned and it felt I was in my own way . Same ball flight every time

Hi David! When you do feet together draw, what happens? You would simply play the ball off the big toe of the trail foot and let momentum graze the right edge of the intermediate point, then for fade, aim a hair left of IP and play the ball off the big toe of the lead foot and let momentum stay left of the IP (right handed shots for both)

So Shawn if I am hitting driver and I have good alignment to target and it feels like I am swinging and staying with my shot to the right edge of my IP for a right handed golfer (desiring a baby draw) but it is more often than not coming off feeling very well struck and compressed but is consistently pulled pretty far left with a draw that would most likely be a clubface at setup issue? I’ve had several lately that really surprised me as everything felt perfect staying centered and behind the ball and staying with the shot to the right edge of IP and I can’t figure out why it pulls left and goes further left. Could it be the more I am getting through the ball the more I need to open the face a bit at setup? Just want to make sure I understand it right that the initial ball flight using the club with the least amount of loft will be much more affected by clubface angle at setup or grip club relationship etc. I think this video might be exactly what I have been missing if I understand it right. Makes me think I might not be as far off as I thought if it may be just a simple grip club relationship change keeping everything else the same.

    Thanks!
    Dave

Hey Dave! Sorry I missed this one! Yes, club face through impact with driver is important as it affects initial direction the most. If you were with me and we had our GC Quad, it would probably show consistent path and angle of attack but have a club face in the 4 degree closed range. If you feel that you are through the ball nicely and stayed with the shot, and the ball has a pattern of what you say, then you need to back off the grip-club relationship. 😀👍

Thanks Shawn! I opened the face just a bit…estimating 4 degrees and wow what a difference. Hit 75% of fairways and misses were just in the rough. This was a lightbulb moment for me…with all clubs. Shot my best score of the year. No lost balls playing same ball for full round which hasn’t been the case lately. Just a couple 3 putts kept me from breaking 80. Hopefully this vaults me to that next level.

I’ve been working on this quite a bit between the range and my rounds. I’ve been fairly successful in both draws and fades with my irons. I still have some work to do in terms of how much draw or fade occurs, but nothing that hurts when I just aim for my target. For my driver and FW woods, I have had more success with fades. Most of the time when I attempt a draw I end up with a snap hook. I do have some more Goldilocks drills to work on with them, but feel like it’s coming along. Hopefully, I can keep this pace for my club championship next weekend. 😬

Last time i was on the range i had problems with 3 wood from the ground. Mis hits and max carry was only about 190 yards. Then it came to mind to try baseball release feel. It felt like my body and also clubface was pointing more right before impact. It really felt like i was going to hit way right and i get 210 carry with nice draw 😯😃 So actually are sword, hammer or baseball drill more about FEEL drills? In reality momentum and toe heavy golf club will rotate trough impact without helping. Well you probably had said it many times 😂 but it probably needs enough momentum and good release to target to make it work 🤔

the gravity center of the body must be very well positionned and stable, so the flight of the ball will be fantastic.

  • From [email protected] on Kinetic Chain Engagement

Shawn I have been experimenting with a feel you mentioned on one of your podcasts a couple months ago but I don’t remember you making a video about it. You were talking about really engaging your lead side to “pull” through with lead arm to activate the kinetic chain vs “push” with the trail arm. I use the “battering ram” task and when I do that task thinking slow heavy momentum to the target “pulling” through with my lead side instead of “pushing” with my trail side I notice a significant improvement in my kinetic chain engagement getting more through the ball. Could you explain that feel in more detail and any tips on how to better utilize it without getting into strain or manipulation?

    Thanks,
    Dave P

Hey Dave! My favourite feel and drill which always ends up giving me an extra club in distance is the #6 in the kinetic chain facilitation series where we walk while sending tidy rows of divots into the woods; when the lead leg grabs the ground and your focus is to send that divot flying into the bushes you get amazing engagement through the whole chain. Just pay attention to what your body wants to do while doing that task well and see what it wants to do.

Thanks Shawn. Will try to find a good place to send some divots! As I was thinking about lead side kinetic chain engagement this evening I got out my swing caddie pro in the garage and was swinging it with my lead hand thinking about really engaging the lead side and I had a lightbulb moment. I put both hands on the device taking my normal grip and did a very slow frictionless full backswing thinking a slow heave into position engaging my trail side, imagining I was drawing a bow back with my trail hand trigger finger. I then allowed a natural pause at the top and thought about sending a powerful heavy battering ram to the right edge of my imaginary IP with focusing on really firing my lead side sending the butt end of the club in my lead hand to my target. I was absolutely amazed at the difference in the speed I was able to generate. After a few goes warming up I felt something different kick in and I kept increasing the setting on the swing caddie and after about 5 lead side powered swings I easily generated enough speed to click it over on the ~130mph setting. I think I’ve been short circuiting my kinetic chain by trying to push with my trail side instead of utilizing a powerful pull with my lead side all these years. I can’t wait to take it to the range as I really think it will be a game changer generating a lot more effortless speed and staying much more balanced all the way to the finish.

      Thanks for the inspiration!

      Dave

Shawn one feel I’ve grasped onto lately is the “Wring the towel” feel. It locks my grip in super firm, I’ve always felt the club sliding around a bit much for my liking occasionally in the lead hand. Is this a feel you’re a fan of? I can really feel the hands opposing each other now and the left hand feels like its pulling back as the trail hand zips thorugh.

Really works nicely with your oldie but goodie video on YT talking about casting the club head at your target like a fishing rod.

New member, I recently took lesson and they reversed everything causing me to hit/lose balls off to the right. Decided to go premium instead of continuing with the lesson, any more videos showing top down view of your stance setup and swing. Maybe Mu, or Sav. How square are should I be to target ( final ball position) or flight plan? (Direction I want to throw the club)

Hey David! Yes! See my favourite series called “kinetic chain facilitation and engagement series” and #6 is especially good!
Then see “the goldilocks series” to dial in distance to ball, ball position, grip and club relationship, and levels.
“Alignment reload”video is a must too.

Thank you. I felt good about what I was trying to implement at the range today but I kept pushing the ball out to the right? The local guy u took a lesson from recently said my swing was too straight back, when I am working on kettle bell “outta the way” drills; should I be swinging parallel to squared feet and shoulders or to the inside? My goal is to play the draw? Would it be better to play a fade is my swing plane is natural more vertical? I am 6’3″ with a 77in wingspan if that makes a difference. I have been working on shortening the back swing as I have a tendency to over swing
