Bonjour Shawn,
Cordialement
Jean Pascal
Bingo!!! “Your hand is going to seek its natural position (through impact).” That resonated with me. It is a real important foundation concept.
This video on grip explained where my nasty hook came from. My grip at address looked normal but I had grooved a slide into a strong grip on the takeaway. The thumb was supporting the club. I had muddled ‘getting behind the ball’ into changing my grip. No matter how well I swung the club through the ball that sucker went HARD left. It drove me to extremes to keep the ball in play. (opening the face, swing right, hang onto the club, change settings on my driver … gosh I tried everything)
On the same night, I also happened to watch your video on the practice range with Matt. You mentioned “driving range rhythm” and how that induces one to “red line the engine”. Guilty as charged. You said to basically reboot the swing by dropping Strain to 2 out of 10 and Speed to 5 out of 10. Second Bingo!!!
Needless to say between these two tips I had an AMAZING practice session today. The hook was totally gone and contact was quite solid. I actually started to work the ball which is a mega jump for me considering where I was. The sad thing thing was losing a season to simple flaws. Ouch. I am writing to share that there is no substitute for seeking the help of a professional. Don’t waste precious time. Also, it cannot hurt to roll through the video library either. 😉 Thanks for this.
So much fun to learn; I could hear and feel your “aha” moments throughout this comment; really cool! So happy you joined us and continued “aha” moments this off season to you! Shawn
On the long bunker shot that you hit to the green, did you think to yourself to hit ball first then go through the sand or are you hitting a regular sand shot while taking less sand?
Using a lob wedge; closed face to de-activate the bounce of the club so no loss of distance-for this shot a bit more distance is involved; for normal bunker shots from the fairway, use 1 extra club 95% of the time, especially in the short irons where there will be a lot more spin!

Hey Shawn – I am doing my assigned homework (and loving it) and watching these videos. What are the three dots and how do I get some? I know that you are aiming off of them, but I always line up stones or whatever is lying around – the black dots would be way better. My home mat has nothing. and I rotate it for wear so I would want to put the dots on all 4 corners 🙂 Thanks, Andy
I realize it is contrary to normal teaching, but I have a high rate of success in long bunker shots (providing the ball is sitting up reasonably well) by “cleaning” the ball with a club lofted enough to clear the lip. What I mean is to pick up very little or no sand and essentially hitting the ball first. This method originally became necessary because the course I was playing frequently had fairly firm sand traps and it was difficult to blast out of them. What would you suggest in very firm or thin traps?
This is a fairway bunker shot, not a greenside bunker shot; If the fairway bunkers are firm, this is a REALLY GOOD PROBLEM!! 😀👍
But if you are on clay in greenside bunkers, you have no choice but to use the technique you described. Keep it up!
Shawn
If you hold your arms out in front of you as if you at neck height in full extension; then bring the palms together, how are the elbows pointing? My elbows point at my hips and the inside of the elbows point 45 degrees up towards the sky.
Heading to Home Depot to get a hammer, would you recommend a 4 lb hammer or 6lb sledge hammer to practice the swing with In the garage for the upcoming winter months. Seems like a great drill to use to train my body to get out of the way. Noticed that hitting balls into net in garage my core muscles ache as well as the bottom bone on my left side rib cage Is sore, what
Would cause this. Thanks
Yeah man! Get both! You will see the benefits big time; and the soreness is from strain in the swing; keep the strain or effort level at 3/10 to get 7/10 in speed and compression.
Shawn – my problem is I lift up to give the arms room rather than staying in posture and turning out of the way so the shoulders turn flat and I’m out of position any drills or videos to get me to maintain my spine angle rather than lift up in initial backswing thanks
Hey Cliff!
Don’t think about how flat or upright the shoulders need to be; just the task of cutting through the grass IN BOTH DIRECTIONS will put you on plane and as you swing in both directions without stopping, you will get into a nice rhythm of getting out of the way with a nice full turn of the backside in each direction.
When I throw the club, I feel like I am continuing ‘around the circle’ with the handle, pass the ball and up. Sort of like your battering ram drill, but the motion continues up in order to get release towards the throwing target. Does that make sense? It’s slightly different than the scraping the ground hockey motion, so I’m a bit confused.
I have been watching you for awhile, and getting better, but this summer the combo of, throwing the club, diagonal up and this hammer throw — along with you intermediate point idea, has me hitting my clubs further than ever with little effort (when I do it right). My 9 iron is now my 140 club. My 8 iron goes 155. At the range today the flag is 250 UPHILL and I was flying it IN THE AIR easily. It’s nuts. I have had to club back at least one and sometimes two clubs on all my shots. You are are doing it right. Keep it up sir.
This afternoon was the first time I tried the diagonal stance. My friend tried to tell me I was lined up wrong – way right, but when I hit this perfect draw around the lake edge down the right side of the fairway, he was impressed. It felt so good. On the next hole, I hit a fade to fit the dog-leg right of the fairway. It worked nicely, but I don’t seem to get as much distance when I fade my shot. I strained (pulled with my arms) on one fairway shot, and I sliced the ball. Is that because gravity isn’t letting the club face, the second pendulum close properly? I like what I’m seeing. I had two birdies in nine holes tonight.
Sounds like you Are simply opening the face too much on the fade; with driver, there should be no loss of distance unless you have 10.5 degrees or more on the face. The rest is prediction: see “goldie locks series” videos and “predict contact” as well as “fade fine tuning” and “draw fine tuning”
Shawn
Changing my grip has singlehandedly been the best bang for my buck.
The contact improved dramatically, but it wasn’t until I watched the Wisdom in Golf 1.0 video series (so long so I avoided it!) where you commented that the 10 finger grip was as excellent an option as the other options.
Once I switched to the 10 finger, combined with the proper lead hand thumb and trail hand trigger finger positions, things started to get eerily awesome!
Feeling the club supported on the lead hand thumb at the top of the backswing got SO simple, and when that started happening (only possible for me with the 10 finger grip) not only was the contact pure, my path, face and release was just so simple, consistently. It took 2 sessions to dial it in, and with this new found consistently, only now can I excitedly move forward to shot shaping and the rest rest of the swing / advanced topics.
I was insistent on the interlock due to the Grip Update video, but the 10 finger made my club arm unit much more solid. I wish I would have come across your comment from 1.0 much sooner!
Right on man! Thank you for the great comment; this will help many!
The good news is you have a nice inefficient grip to compare the efficient grip to and your brain lit up like a full harvest moon and gave you this exquisite feedback; congrats!!!
Played 9 holes today and focused on nothing but my braced tilt. I hit all my clubs straighter and farther than I ever have. Looking forward to playing again but need to get my driver swing fixed.
