Shawn, been working on my driver plane. If I swing with a more upright plane, I feel that I can keep the ball from slicing or hooking much better than a flatter arc. That is, my misses are straighter. However, the release feels more complicated to achieve. That is, my grip and backswing have to match just right in order to get the proper release. Feels great once I get it…but it doesn’t come as naturally as a flatter arc. I’ve been trying out the extremes to see which I like better. A little Goldilocks if you will. Extreme upright, and then extreme flat. It’s really cool to play around with it. Then I try to find something right in the middle. Seem to get the best result in the middle. But it’s crazy how much the grip affects the release. It’s so crucial. I’m really trying to fine tune my prediction process because as we all know, we only get one shot at it on the course.
What you are in the process of doing with the driver and goldie locks is super healthy and will bear fruit!! Can’t wait to hear about the results! Shawn
ok thanks. looks like your grip is quite strong; as I said over at the recent Youtube video, I can’t seem to get a very strong grip to work with the driver or 3w yet. Perhaps it just requires more practice.
Remember how everyone is different there; you seem to be doing well with what you have! What matters is when you release in the direction you want the ball to start that the ball behaves in the air the way you wNt it to. Then if needed, you can make the adjustments.
well I am just taking note of the difference between irons and woods because very few can outhit me with irons, but I am just average with the woods., I haven’t been able to use my iron grip and setup with the woods. Of course with driver it is also teed up and forward in the stance, that is one key difference. Perhaps I should move the ball back in the stance like with the irons. I have noticed that some tour players are playing the ball back, esp. John Rahm.
Interesting how in the slo mos you can see the release happens the exact same way (how the hands release for the draw) – I’ve always had trouble ‘accepting’ that a release like that will still be able to fade the ball.
Also one thing I’ve taken from this video is when you said “and i wasn’t even trying” – which I take to mean you were swinging well within yourself or within your ‘3 of 10 level of effort’.
Exactly man, very good! This makes me happy as this was the desired effect of the video. The anatomy needs the same SELF PRESERVING RELEASE for either fade or draw.
I am in Florida from 19th to the 26th of January and have just 2 spots left on the morning of the Friday the 24th in Melbourne. Then we are in Palm Springs on March 3-4 and Phoenix on March 6-7.
Looking at South Carolina and Texas end of April-beginning May.

This series on chipping on slopes has been real gold! I can’t wait to get out to try the simple technique! I’ve been struggling with chipping lately, and I’m pretty sure the flaw you describe of focus on the ball is where the problem has been – and I’ve been thinking it was some technique I didn’t have quite right — I know, I’m not defective 🙂
I am going with what will allow me to deliver all the way. A great way to do this is to use goldie locks with the stance and plug it into the prediction of the release towards the direction you want to start the ball; very very effective! Hogan definitely had a good thing going with this!
Other than putting, is there any other shot/swing in golf in which this release doesn’t happen? Eg sand shots, chip shots. Or should I be feeling this release in some degree in all shots?
Any shot where you have activated and loaded the second pendulum; chips and putts are a no because there is no release and bunker shots are full swing fades and get a full release; it’s just that the face is much more open to activate the sole’s grind and bounce for spraying sand!
I keep hearing you say you are just a witness to the kinetic chain but I don’t think I’m there yet. I can easily do the lead hand/Trail hand drills with one hand. The slash the sword feeling with either hand is free and easy. It is when I put my hands together and try to get that same free/easy release where I think things break down. It feels like the hands are not working together correctly in that I don’t feel that release into my picture. I’ve reviewed the grip videos and I feel comfortable with them. I like the balanced re-hinge finish for target confirmation. It is just the release through the ball with both hands that I feel like I’m getting stuck. It is frustrating because know when doing other sports like baseball and tennis, the release for me is automatic whether I throw a ball or hit a ground stroke….but those are both one handed actions. Something happens when I put two hands together, it is just not as fluid or easy feeling and there is no zip to it. Any ideas?
Yes, baseball hitting! Use something heavier to release you fully like a baseball bat! You will no longer have a choice. Then plug the feel into the golf shots! This has worked so well for so many of my students!
OMG SC! I needed to see this video last week before my four days at Bandon Dunes. I played great the first two days by staying in the flow state then the snap hook tee shots appeared;. I even dropped kicked a couple a few. I could not figure out the cause and then you addressed it with this video ! In hindsight, I was getting quick and over exerting the downswing. I’m thinking about flow rhythm and the right elbow now. Is the correction also in the underarm football how ?
Shawn, I have only been a member for a week. I have been taking lessons for the last 8 months on-line through top speed golf. I have made a lot of progress, but found your sight and I was drawn to how you teach the chip and build it into the full swing. I also really admire your teaching style, I coach golf and watching your lessons are going to make me much better at helping my players develop their games. I really enjoy how you interact with your students as well. Big fan!!
I live in central Ohio, so I am beating balls into a net with face tape. Can’t wait to see some ball flight with my improved grip and closed club face!
The double overlap has made a world of difference to my set-up, and putting stroke. The putter rests so flat and it is much easier for me to hover the blade pre-impact. I’m short so even a 35 inch putter, I have always felt as if I need to choke down. With the double overlap, the putter fits better and I don’t feel like it is in my gut. I feel way more comfortable and consistent. BOOYAH!!
Awesome stuff! Welcome and make yourself at home! We actually just filmed another grip session with Savannah and used a “top speed tennis” backhand grip screen shot to show the identical nature of the stronger grip and why for many it makes all the difference. I look forward to seeing more of your posts! 👍😀
GREAT LESSON! I just need some clarification on the set-up. Should the chip shot start from an impact (or modified impact) position, with front side slightly open? It appears on video that you are slightly open but not much. When I was chipping, I made better contact with my front side open, which also helped me get my head behind the ball.
Yes, just slightly open in the stance, ball off the back foot with narrower stance too; hands hang naturally in front of the ball and it feels like the stem of that dandelion will get cut first if the swing’s momentum stays with the direction of the intermediate point.
I find that my drives are starting to gain some length. My irons lack distance and Ifeel this video provides the very thing I need to work on. Would it also be the same release for the woods but on the way?
Not a priority; the dynamic aspect of the shaft does affect the lie of the club and the grass length and ground do provide a buffer zone to allow the club to get through without too many issues. Priorities are balanced set up that will allow you to stay balanced through the shot as you deliver into the direction you want to start the ball with ease. Shawn
Should the perpetual motion pratice drill be performed in a proper setup position? Just as for real you were setting up to drive the ball to the target. Thanks
Yes, full posture and the feel that the arms and club swing under the chest and in front of the body with full clearance and balance; see “pumping up the swing” video as well as battering ram video to complement what I just wrote too; enjoy! 😀👍
